3. If your answer in number two is yes then as a student

Three main processes or forces of
plate movements
1. Convection current
2. Ridge push
3. Slab pull
z
I. CONVECTION CURRENT
-happens very slowly, as they
move and drag the plates along
-The hot less dense rising
material spreads out as it
reaches the upper mantle
causing upward and sideward
forces.
-These forces lift and split the
lithosphere at mid-ocean ridge or
at the divergent plate
boundaries.
z
I. CONVECTION CURRENT
-The hot magma flows out
of the mantle and cools down
to form new ocean crust.
-The downward movement of
the convection current occurs
along subduction zone or in a
convergent boundary where
the sinking force pulls the
tectonic plate downward. TediousRigidAmericankestrel-size_restricted.gif (327×251) (gfycat.com)

Convection is a kind of heat transfer. Heat transfer in a convection
is caused by differences in temperature and density within a fluid or
gas particle.

z
Rise and Fall
1. Based on the diagram, what
happens to the water as it
heated? Why?
-Water rises as it is heated
because its molecules become
less dense.
2. What happens to the hot
water as it cooled?
-Water sinks as it cools because
its molecules become denser.
z
Rise and Fall
3. How does boiling water
resemble a process that
drives the movement of the
tectonic plates?
-The uneven distribution of heat
energy in the water causes denser
molecules to sink and less dense to
rise. Similarly, the uneven
distribution of heat energy in the
earth’s interior causes denser rocks
to sink and less dense rocks to rise.
z
II. Ridge Push
As an oceanic crust moves away from a divergent boundary,
it becomes denser than the newer oceanic crust.
z
 As the older seafloor sinks, the weight of the uplifted
ridge pushes the oceanic crust toward the trench at
the subduction zone. This process is called ridge
z
II. Slab Pull
is the other possible process involved in the tectonic plate
movement.
z
The weight of the subducting plate pulls the trailing slab
into the subduction zone just like a tablecloth slipping off
the table and pulling items with it.
z

Activity 3:HOW DO WE COOK BY
CONVECTION
Palitaw is a kind of sweet,
chewy and flattened rice cake.
-This Filipino rice cake is
prepared by soaking a glutinous
rice grains in water overnight
and then processed as dough.
-The dough is flattened into
small pieces and cooked in boiling
water until they float, this is
the reason why it was called
palitaw.

Editor's Notes

  • #34 It explains how the massive plates move along the different types of plate tectonic boundaries (convergent, divergent and transform fault)
  • #37 where they interact, and the geologic events (earthquakes and subduction) and geologic features (formation of mountains, volcanoes, and trenches) that occur at their boundaries.
