Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was a famous Spanish painter born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain. He travelled extensively in Europe, visiting France and Italy to study painting techniques. Goya served as the official painter to King Charles IV of Spain and King Ferdinand VII of Spain. In 1792, Goya suffered a terrible illness that left him deaf. Some of his most famous works include portraits of the Spanish royal family, The 3rd of May 1808 in Madrid depicting French executions, and Saturn Devouring His Son, known for its dark tones and unsettling subject matter.
