The document describes the traditional 'push' system of manufacturing and its weaknesses compared to the 'pull' system. The traditional system starts in the factory with production based on demand forecasts, involves storage of materials and components, and ends with finished goods in storage until purchased by customers. This pushes products from the factory to customers. In contrast, the 'pull' system starts with customer orders and uses a pull system of production down the process chain triggered by customer demand. The key principles of the 'pull' system emphasize minimizing waste and maximizing flow, utilization, flexibility, and communication.

Pull systems are a type of manufacturing system where components are only produced as demand requires, rather than producing in large batches ahead of demand. Pull systems contrast with traditional push systems where production is based on forecasts rather than actual customer orders. Implementing pull systems can impact manufacturing processes by only producing components when they are needed downstream rather than overproducing ahead of demand.
This document discusses the differences between push and pull production systems. In a push system, production is triggered by actual and forecasted demand, while in a pull system production is triggered by inventory voids signaled by cards. A pull system establishes an a priori limit on work-in-process (WIP) inventory levels, while a push system does not have this feedback loop. Some benefits of pull systems include reduced manufacturing costs by preventing WIP explosions, reduced variability through lower and more consistent WIP levels, and improved quality by making inspections easier with lower WIP.

The document discusses pull systems for replenishing inventory using the example of purchasing milk. It also discusses the critical path method (CPM) for network analysis and project scheduling. CPM involves identifying the critical path of activities that determine the shortest project duration. An example CPM analysis is provided to find the earliest and latest event times for activities in a project.

The document discusses lean software development principles and the pull system approach. It introduces 7 principles of lean software development: eliminate waste, build quality in, create knowledge, defer commitment, deliver fast, respect people, and optimize the whole. Some types of waste in software development are identified. The document then contrasts push vs pull scheduling and discusses using a pull system with Kanban to visualize and limit work in progress. Key aspects of implementing a pull system like Kanban boards and daily standup meetings are outlined.

The company focuses on research and development, investing 7% of annual turnover, and has partnerships with several universities and research institutions. 5M produces composite profiles, sandwich panels, epoxy resins and adhesives that are used in industries like transportation, aviation, construction and sports equipment.
The document introduces the concept of a pull system in manufacturing. It explains that a pull system models production after a supermarket, where the downstream process "pulls" parts as needed from the upstream supplier or process. This contrasts with a traditional push system where parts are produced and pushed to downstream processes based on a schedule. The key advantages of a pull system include only producing what is needed, eliminating overproduction and waste, and ensuring good flow of materials through the process. Kanban cards are also introduced as the mechanism for signaling production requests between processes in a pull system.
