Back in 2003, Emergence Capital theorized that enterprise software would move to the cloud. The first ten years were flush with companies in the horizontal market: Salesforce, Workday and Intacct all changed the way organizations do business. Now, ten years after Emergence started, we are seeing an even bigger opportunity: vertical cloud solutions. With Veeva, Guidewire and Opower, we are in the midst of an industry cloud revolution.
Don't believe us? Take a look here at how industry cloud is both similar and different than prior technology shifts, and check out our take on the hallmarks of an industry cloud company as well as the current industry cloud landscape.

As CIOs and IT Executives today play a far more visible role and are central to business success, they are now charged with driving innovation, leading change, improving customer satisfaction, as well as ensuring a productive workforce and supply chain. The latest buzz around the new digital marketplace and the latest advancements in cloud, mobile, and virtualization is focusing more and more around optimizing the tech-dependent workforce’s “user experience”. As a counterpoint to the promised innovation, we also see some pretty intimidating statistics out there on failure rates for many of these business-critical initiatives. This infographic helps to illustrate how top business transformation initiatives not only have a pattern of symptoms, but how one common denominator, lack of business and IT visibility into these issues is epidemic. Digital Transformation - Creating new business models where digital meets physical
Glenn Brouwer
Director, Enterprise and Industry Sales – Europe, IBM Netherlands
Individuals and businesses alike are embracing the digital revolution. Social networks and digital devices are being used to engage government, businesses and civil society, as well as friends and family. People are using mobile, interactive tools to determine who to trust, where to go and what to buy.
At the same time, businesses are undertaking their own digital transformations, rethinking what customers value most and creating operating models that take advantage of what's newly possible for competitive differentiation. The challenge for business is how fast and how far to go on their path to digital transformation.
Glenn will share his experience through working with clients how companies are defining new strategies for integrating digital and physical elements to successfully transform their business models and set new directions for entire industries.

Bessemer Venture Partners' is proud to share The State of the Cloud for 2017.
As the definitive guide to the biggest trends in the cloud industry, this year’s “State of the Cloud Report” includes:
1. A Look Back at 2016
- 2016 was a marquee year for a number of reasons. First, we all remember the rocky start in February where the Cloud Market dropped 35%
- Subsequently, rebounded back to normal levels and ended the year up +15%
- The dip in the market had two main outcomes: First, it led to unprecedented amounts of M&A (4x more than any other year and 40% of the total cloud market cap of $300B) – and second, it led to the fewest number of cloud tech IPOs since the financial crisis.
- A combination of these factors has led to the highest quality backlog of private cloud companies in history. The top 100 private Cloud companies alone represent over $100B of private enterprise value.
2. We provide a deeper look into the three top questions every private cloud CEO should be discussing with his/her executive team
- How fast should I be growing?
- How much should I burn?
- How do I scale?
3. Bessemer’s 7 Predictions for 2017
- The year of human assisted AI
- APIs will serve as the backbone for a majority of software infrastructure
- Architect for infinite scale without infinite spend
- Mobile unlocks non-desk worker productivity
- NPS everything
- Diverse teams win
- The screenless software movement
Summary Report: Vertical Industry Strategies for Shared Services and Outsourc...Everest Group
Everest Group and the Shared Services & Outsourcing Network (SSON) conducted the first-ever survey focused on vertical industry strategies in shared services and outsourcing.
The survey covered 28 vertical industries, 8 horizontal functions, and 164 vertical functions. It addressed a wide range of topics from scope to improvement initiatives to sourcing models to technology strategies.
Horizontal scaling in the Cloud is the way to adapt resources to load of systems. The Cloud allows users to scale virtually indefinitely, or enough for their needs.
This way the number of servers follows trend of requests, and TCO (Total Cost of Owneship) of IT infrastructure can be reduced. Nonetheless companies can avoid dealing with capacity planning and pre-provisioning issues.
This talk will show how to use Python and Rackspace/OpenStack API and SDK to implement an event-based scaling solution (software released under the open-source Apache License: stay tuned).
What every successful open source project needsSteven Francia
In the last few years open source has transformed the software industry. From Android to Wikipedia, open source is everywhere, but how does one succeed in it? While open source projects come in all shapes and sizes and all forms of governance, no matter what kind of project you’re a part of, there are a set of fundamentals that lead to success. I’d like to share some of the lessons I’ve learned from running two of the largest commercial open source projects, Docker and MongoDB, as well as some very successful community projects.

Emergence Capital has researched hundreds of leading industry focused cloud companies and creating a landscape highlighting the leaders in each vertical.
Driven by the dual forces of globalization and convergence, the exponential explosion of technology in the last 10 years has created a pace of change we’ve never seen before. With many technologies’ “15 minutes” burning bright but fizzling quickly, it can be challenging for brands to determine where to place their bets to drive their businesses forward. To h e l p m a r k e t e r s m a k e s m a r t e r, better bets, we’ve distilled the complexity and general chaos of the CES show floors into 11 key categories that have broken through this year. We’ve then plotted these on a matrix to lay out each technology’s potential to move your business. Our proprietary methodology takes into account the tech’s inherent riskiness, readiness to go to market, potential business impact, and other considerations. The resulting DentsuAegis Tech Matrix is a helicopter view of where we advise marketers to make their technology and innovation investments over the next 12 months. From VR, to AI, to Drones and more, we’re excited about the potential for brands to find meaningful transformation through the groundbreaking technology first seen each year at CES.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

20. In the past, vertical software has been a kludgy extention of the horizontal code.
Customization was usually done by systems integrators like Accenture whose business models
were based on one-off projects for their largest customers.
Every year, a new set of consultants would build custom code extensions.
21. We all know what happens when you use spaghetti code with bad fittings, everything leaks.
Customizations were expensive to maintain and prevented the true value of vertical software to
accrue to customers. One set of custom code couldn’t talk to another custom project.
The promise of aligning the software and data insights in a particular industry was never realized.
