They abound in every business. They are usually
spread over many locations and cannot be found eas-
ily or found at all when they are needed. We’re talk-
ing about data – a valuable but often undervalued
resource. The result: lots of time wasted in searching,
only to recreate or purchase what’s already there.
This not only ties up capacity, it also makes expenses
quickly go through the roof. It is worth it to seek out
the many data treasures, dig them and make them
available to be meaningfully used. Because in this
day and age, when we are determined to keep ex-
penses low and productivity high, proper and trans-
parent handling of data is often the only screw left to
turn in the search for optimization.
We at TDM Systems are – to keep with the meta-
phor – specialized treasure hunters for tool data. In
seeking out and highlighting the treasures, however,

role for manufacturing businesses in regards to Industrie 4.0. The Sandvik Group is further strengthen-
ing this sector and is building a Digital Center of Excellence. TDMessage spoke about this with Fredrik
Vejgården, VP of Strategy & Business Development at Sandvik Machining Solutions.

Why are new business models
needed?
Software businesses operate in a com-
pletely different manner from the tradi-
tional “old economy”. We want to learn
from these digital companies. This is
because in the future even manufactur-
ing enterprises will have to operate fast-
er, more nimbly and more cooperatively.
Digitization changes working practices
and offers many chances to adapt to
the service spectrum, to broaden and to
develop new business models.
Sandvik is one of the largest global
industrial groups. Where does the
company stand today in terms of
digitization?
Sandvik leads in many product areas, in
technology as well as in application so-
lutions for customers. We can’t rest on
these laurels, however. In the digital age,
our strengths are still in demand, but
how we develop and deliver and what
our relationship to the customer looks
like changes.
TDM Systems began as a pioneer in
the area of Tool Management. What
role does TDM Systems play in the
new Center?
A significant one. TDM Systems is al-
ready strongly represented in the market
with solutions for Tool Lifecycle Man-
agement. We have a lot of experience
there. We still have a long way ahead of
us, however, in using our whole market
potential. Many companies are still at
the very beginning of the Industrie 4.0
evolution. I see excellent market pros-
pects for Tool Lifecycle Management.
Compared to the large Sandvik
brands in tool manufacturing,
TDM Systems is a small unit.
Will that change?
Digital topics are gaining importance,
even inside Sandvik. TDM Systems has
the chance to grow with that. We have
to be sure that our large brands can
further develop their business with digi-
tal technologies and concepts quickly
enough.
What does Sandvik expect from
TDM Systems?
TDM today already has a leading posi-
tion in the field of Tool Lifecycle Man-
agement. To meet growing demands in
the future, TDM Systems must quickly
develop new solutions and models and
consistently push ahead with digitiza-
tion.
The Sandvik Group has launched
a Digital Center of Excellence.
What is the purpose of this new unit?
Digitization touches all areas of life and
business. Even production has experi-
enced a significant change through the
networking of processes, machines and
tools. Sandvik would like to take a lead-
ing role here.
What is so new about digitization?
Take an example from our private lives:
The Internet has revolutionized our me-
dia, communication and purchasing be-
haviors. Today, even children are used
to get information for their homework,
movies and music off the net. Now
comes the smart home: the networking
of household technology and robots.
This is a digital revolution that is radi-
cally changing our ways of living, work-
ing and thinking.
What challenges do you see for
Sandvik in the course of this?
There are primarily three topics: First
and most important is the development
of digital technologies for our three busi-
ness sectors, Machining Solutions, Min-
ing & Rock Technology and Materials
Technology. Second, the Center needs
to act independently and beyond any
particular brand in the market in offering
services for Tool Lifecycle Management;
I see excellent market prospects
for Tool Lifecycle Management.

The TDM Tool Management
of the future
TDM next generation starts in 2017. TDM next generation represents the future of Tool Data Manage-
ment in times of Internet of Things, clouds and software programs on demand. What’s important to
note here is that the generational change is happening seamlessly. Customer investments are safe. Pre-
viously installed TDM-modules will continue to function and provide valuable services.

“With TDM next generation we are openly developing TDM
further. The software base is being completely revised. The
user will receive it automatically as part of an update,” an-
nounces TDM System’s Vice President Eugen Bollinger. Bol-
linger is particularly proud to note that the development
team has succeeded in protecting the existing applications
that customers are using. “By doing so, we give our custom-
ers a clear positive outlook for the future while also ensuring
absolute investment protection for the system that has been
installed so far!” TDM next generation fits ideally into the
higher-level IT strategy “Tool Lifecycle Management” from
TDM Systems.
The developer team is led by Achim Müller. Müller is a me-
chanical engineer who has been involved since day one. From
the very beginning, he participated in the development of
TDM and even wrote his diploma thesis on it. He knows the
requirements of TDM in the light of Industrie 4.0 like the back
of his hand. “TDM/TLM has to be globally usable and scal-

able.” And for Müller, “usable” means “extremely high-perfor-
mance.” In other words, it does not matter if the user is sitting
in the main plant fifteen feet away from the server or on the
other side of the globe – the response times should be practi-
cally the same.
Tool Data Management 4.0
Bollinger explains, “TDM next generation consolidates our two
current software lines, TDM V4 and TDM Global Line. It rep-
resents a new software generation that puts our TDM-TLM
strategy into practice.” TDM next generation enables paral-
lel use of TDM and TDM Global Line modules. Achim Müller
explains, “The new technical base makes it possible for our
existing customers to develop their system further with their
existing modules while also implementing future Industrie 4.0
applications.”
In addition, TDM next generation simplifies the handling of in-
terfaces and the use of on-demand and browser-based solu-
tions, which can also be combined with on-site solutions. In
practice, standard solutions and engineering solutions are of-
ten used in parallel. They can be easily coupled. Müller draws
attention to another advantage, stating “The entire system is
significantly more installation- and service-friendly as well as
giving higher performance.” This is ensured by the 3-Tier soft-

ware architecture of TDM Global Line, whereas TDM 4.8 was
still based on a 2-Tier architecture. “In the 3-Tier architecture,
all calculations are handled by a powerful application serv-
er, which in turn accesses the database server. These freely
scalable servers are capable of operating hundreds or even
thousands of users worldwide – with practically identical
response times!” If the computing requirements increase, as
an alternative to switching on additional physical servers the
customer can virtually switch on exactly the required com-

puter capacity.
In some sense, the IIS application server of Microsoft forms
the heart of TDM next generation. It enables the further de-
velopment of the system without a system change. The data
concept will also be changed. In the future, technical data
and the application it self will be separated. Bollinger states,
“Doing so gives us, above all, advantages when performing
updates, in addition to increased data quality, security and
performance.”

As a result, with minimal effort and without limitations, users
are able to completely remake and modernize the TDM soft-
ware without a time consuming system change. Further ad-
vantages include better performance of the application and
substantially lower effort for installation and service, because
these can be carried out once centrally and no longer have
to be done individually on each computer. “This also makes it
easier to implement on-demand solutions via Internet down-
load,” Müller promises.

“TDM Version 4.8 is the last version to use the ‘four’ naming
system,” explains Bollinger. “Starting immediately, the main
release of each TDM version will be named after the year. Fol-
lowing the year with a slash and sequential number enables
us to release updates immediately even during the year.” It is
also guaranteed that all modules will always work together
perfectly.
One highlight of the next version will be the new 3D tool as-
sembling in TDM Global Line. “The assembly now works in
3D-view, which once again makes the work much easier than
before and proves our competence in the 3D-area!” The tool
search has been updated too. It is now similar to a convenient
Internet search, just like we are used to seeing with popular
search engines and purchasing platforms. Any search terms
that describe the tool can be entered. The results can be nar-
rowed down with filters, which helps you find what you need
very quickly. Another new feature is TDMcheck, a procedure
that checks data and processes of the TDM application and
specifies areas of potential improvement.
New tools optimize data management
The previously mentioned separation of data and application
now makes it possible to expand and update the application
easily, quickly and independently of the database and data.
Downloading tool data from catalogs or from the TDM Data
and Graphic Generator has also been simplified. Furthermore,
the configuration allows for the option of completely “clean-
ing up” the current status of databases. Müller says, “When
updating to Version 2017, we have the option of analyzing the
database for both completeness and correctness of the data
records. This ensures that the application works properly with
the existing data.” Data quality is absolutely essential to a
functioning system. “The update to TDM 2017/1 provides all
customers with the chance to update their data.”
The new import module now retrieves tool data automati-
cally and accurately from various existing additional sources.
By releasing TDM next generation, TDM Systems is pro-
viding something extraordinary for the software industry.
TDM Global Line marks the cloud-based future of Tool
Data Management with browser-based modules, fast
response times and a particularly user-friendly design.
At the same time, TDM Systems guarantees the con-
tinuance of the existing TDM-modules, which are often
part of highly integrated, customized solutions – ensur-
ing investment protection. This ensures a smooth, au-
tonomous transition. But it gets even better! Those who
would be using TDM Global Line to take their first steps
toward Industrie 4.0 are able to “jump back and forth” as
they please. Thanks to the shared redundancy-free base
for TDM and TDM Global Line, it does not matter where
input is made. It is immediately available in both worlds.
The path to the future of Tool Lifecycle Management
could not be any easier than with TDM next generation!
In conjunction with TDMcontrol, the existing module for data
control and processing, you can define your own templates
for importing data. Achim Müller says, “The data fields to be
imported can be freely defined!” As a result, even existing
data records can be optimally expanded, for example, using
cutting data or similar data that was not previously available.
Bollinger summarizes, “As a result, the effort required to cre-
ate and maintain high-quality databases will be greatly re-
duced!”
TDM Flex Crib keeps tool crib management in line with In-
dustrie 4.0, as Bollinger explains, stating “This add-on to TDM
Global Line is a browser-based solution and enables mobile
inventory management for booking and calling up informa-
tion on tools.”

“Locky” Trojans have been making trouble
for IT departments for some time now and
have also become a business-threatening
danger for some manufacturers. This mal-
ware encrypts all the files of a computer
system and often only releases them upon
payment. What can you do? Good data se-
curity and some additional actions.
“Greetings! We would like to apologize for the incon-
venience, but your computer has been encrypted.”
The blackmail doesn’t always announce himself so
politely as lately with the new crypto-Trojans. A few
iTunes gift cards were the modest demand for the
decryption. The blackmailers are usually much ruder,
but the pattern is the same: A Trojan, usually con-
cealed within infinite e-mail attachments, encrypts
all a computer’s files. The necessary key is only avail-
able upon payment in the Internet currency Bitcoins –
hopefully, since there is no guarantee of receiving the
key.
“It scared the daylights out of me!” Uwe Schütze is
the Senior Project Manager at TDM Systems and has
concerned himself with the topic of data security for
years. “I am generally not scared, if you behaved half-
way rationally, didn’t randomly click on everything
and kept your virus protection up to date, you were
relatively safe up until now. But what we’re expe-
riencing now has a new quality. There is hardly any
right way to protect against this because they keep
changing their behavior. With this, it only helps to pull
the plug: If you notice that something has happened
that shouldn’t have: Pull the power cord immediately
and take the batteries out of notebooks, as well!”

4 | Links that lead down the wrong path
Embedded links in e-mails or on websites and search
engines are an additional source of danger. Supposedly
safe SSL-encrypted links (starting with https for secure)
can turn into the opposite because the data traffic can-
not be analyzed. A firewall with malware protection ef-
fectively “blinds”. One countermeasure is to interrupt the
encrypted communication using a firewall gateway with
SSL-inspection technology that investigates the data
flow, then re-encrypts it afterwards. Most users know
that dangers lurk in e-mail attachments. This means: Do
not open any attachments from unknown senders.
1 | User rights with a sense of proportion
Accounts with administrative rights can modify or delete
files and directories. A second user account should be
set up for administrative rights that is only used for in-
stallation or other administrative duties within a frame-
work of permissions. The normal day-to-day business
runs on standard accounts.
2 | Access rights according to function
If users only receive standard privileges, this allows any
potential damage to be limited. In order to keep this as
narrow as possible, file storage can be organized granu-
larly according to the access rights required for collabo-
ration. This limits damage to just the data accessible to
this user.
3 | Keep software current
Some of the most common gateways are security vulner-
abilities that allow malicious software – sometimes with-
out any user interaction – to directly export or download
further malware. Constantly updating application soft-
ware and help programs with security patches prepared
by the manufacturer increases security. Software to auto-
matically update operating systems and applications for
troubleshooting reduces the effort.

“With good data security, it is actually quickly resolved:
Simply reinstall the unaffected backup, restore the
last missing data and go back to work.” Problem:
Many businesses neglect their data security. “When
an emergency happens, we are also powerless and
can no longer help our customers. Then it’s either give
in to the demands of the blackmailers or reinstall the
system and rebuild the database from scratch.”
The TDM software consists of program files and
technical documentation, as well as the database,
itself. Good data security is always important and
worth its weight in gold, not just against criminal at-
tacks. Data can sometimes be lost when working on
the IT or because of technical defects.
Sadly, a backup is not always a backup. Simply copy-
ing something somewhere is not enough. Locky ran-
domly encrypts everything that it comes across –
even copies of data. The backup therefore needs to
be separated from the rest of the system after it is
created, on an external hard drive, for example, or in
the cloud. Uwe Schütze continues: “We have several
NAS (Network Attached Storage) systems in ad-
dition to our data security system which cyclically
mirror each other so that we can always access the
database for the last 14 days.” It is also important to
have a spatial separation between the data center
and the backups so that not both are destroyed in
case of a fire. His advice: “Since we cannot take over
your data security here at TDM Systems, we recom-
mend that you work together with your internal IT or
with experienced IT systems houses.”

and there is often a great deal of
confusion about what it means. This
point was addressed at the “Digital
‘Economic Miracle’ – Optimized Pro-
duction” event at the FZI (Research
Center for Information Technology)
in Karlsruhe on July 21, 2016. The
visitors gained new perspectives on
Industrie 4.0 because the topic was
made accessible through practical
experience reports, applications and
presentations. One of the organizers
was the “Industrie 4.0 Collabora-
tion Lab,” where TDM Systems has
worked together with other part-
ner companies, such as Bechtle
Systemhaus Karlsruhe and the MES
specialist FORCAM, to advance
digitization in the manufacturing
industry.

published a new release of its
CAD/CAM system: GibbsCAM
2016 will improve the efficiency,
speed and precision of machined
production processes. Among
other things, the tool type “Full
Profile Thread Mill” is new and
gives substantially better sup-
port to the NC user in program-
ming thread milling processes.
This tool type will be supported
with mapping and a new plug-in
starting with TDM 4.8.

Highlights from
Fall 2016
In September, we were on the
way internationally with trade
shows. For us as a leading pro-
vider of Tool Lifecycle Manage-
ment, taking part in the IMTS in
Chicago and the AMB in Stutt-
gart is a highlight each time;
this is because everyone who’s
anyone in the manufacturing
industry meets there. We used
both trade shows this year to
introduce our new generation of
software “TDM next generation”.
At the IMTS (September 12-17)
TDM Systems associates in-
formed visitors about the ad-
vantages of our new solution at
our own booth and at those of
Walter AG and Parlec. At almost
the same time, more precisely
from September 13-17, we were
present at AMB and were able
to carry on interesting conver-
sations and show TDM next
generation to many interested
visitors at the booths of our
partners DMG MORI, KELCH,
Sandvik Coromant, Seco Tools
and Walter.
The slogan “Industrie 4.0” in Ger-
man describes very abstractly the
technological demands enterprises
throughout the world must face in
order to be successful in the future.
The French describe this transi-
tion somewhat more concretely as
“industry of the future”. Visitors to
the meeting on mechanical engi-
neering on June 30, 2016 at SECO
Tools in Bourges in France saw how
the production of the future might
look in practice. At the event two
experts from TDM Systems gave a
glimpse into Tübingen’s answer to
Industrie 4.0, Tool Lifecycle Manage-
ment, and were able on their part to
learn about the French approach to
the future.

How consistent TLM reveals un
Pressure is high in all industries, likewise in the manufacturing industry. If businesses want to remain
competitive, they must constantly increase productivity and reduce their costs in the bargain.
Many businesses are at the point where productivity increases are only possible by discovering
hidden resources.
“By ‘resources,’ most people mean machines, production
equipment or staff,” according to Peter Schneck, Managing
Director of TDM Systems GmbH. “That these also include
data doesn’t occur to many.” TDM has been dealing with the
management of tool data for over 25 years. Two years ago,
the software specialists then developed the Tool Lifecycle
Management strategy which elevated Tool Data Manage-
ment to a higher level. Thus TDM software manages not only
tool data, but also keeps the necessary data ready for every
operational step and every system involved in the manufac-
turing – starting with CAD/CAM through ERP, MES and stor-
age on to tool presetters and the production on the machine
where the chips ultimately fly.
Production-ready planning influences productivity
The heart of TDM is a central database. It provides the in-
dividual employees and machines with the same data for
planning as well as for the actual production. Because TDM
takes care of transparency in the data jungle, the system
closes the often large gaps that divide the virtual world of
planning from the real world of manufacturing. If a designer
doesn’t know which resources are available in the factory, he
drives the expenses for a workpiece up in the first phase of
the formation process – in the planning. However, if he can
refer to the appropriate information – that is, which tools are
most appropriate for which processing step and which are
available in the factory – he can design the workpiece in a
production-oriented manner. In an ideal case, the resources
are digitally mapped and enable a realistic simulation of the
processes.

improves planning for the machine utilization. When the tools
are prepared in a job- and need-oriented manner and with

time automatically drops to a minimum. Even the amount of
automation can increase with thorough Tool Lifecycle Man-
agement. Since the experience of individual employees is not
easy to digitize, businesses often create knowledge islands
that are no longer available when key personnel retire. New
employees then mostly have to start from scratch, which
drives production times up. Making all the necessary data
available in the system solves this problem.
Traceability as CIP factor
The unique selling point of TDM software is that the sys-
tem not only manages and makes information available
that has already been fed in, but most notably, it also col-
lects the data generated during production of a workpiece
on the machine. An analysis of the data provides informa-
tion on possible problems and modifications during manu-
facturing with which the next production run can, in turn, be
optimized. Using data feedback, a continuous process of
improvement (CIP) emerges. “With our solution, we have
a unique selling point in the market” according to Schneck,
“because our TDM is capable of accumulating information
and knowledge and making it reusable for the subsequent
tasks. It is, as they say, self-teaching.” Thanks to consistent
tool data flow, productivity rises as expenses fall: The more
efficient overall process first ensures that fewer tools and
thus a smaller inventory is necessary, which drops tool costs
by up to 30 percent; secondly, machine run-times are raised
by up to 20 percent.
Software, process optimization and data quality must go
hand in hand
Tool Lifecycle Management makes it possible for businesses
to discover and use hidden resources in every area. And this
with a return on investment (ROI) of one to, at most, two years
with consistent use. “For good TLM, it is not enough to only
implement some software,” emphasizes Managing Director
Schneck. “Success only happens if optimized processes are
introduced.” And added: “The whole project stands or falls
with data quality, of course. Whoever wants to implement
Tool Data Management must first do some important home-
work: inventorying his tools!”

high-precision gears and other components for building transmis-
sions are built on automatic rod machines at Herzog.

“We are still in the middle of the setup, but can already say
that more transparency in our tool management is worth all!”
Christian Fischinger leads tool management at Herzog: “Since
the beginning of this year, we genuinely have the situation here
that I visualize under the term “tool management.”
Herzog actually began the journey long ago. They inherited
TDM, so to speak. In 2002, Herzog took over the Sonnenbühl
factory for machining production from C. & E. Fein GmbH, the
traditional Swabian manufacturer of professional electrical
tools for craft and industry. It also had TDM roots from Jens
Schuster, today TDM Systems Sales Director for Germany:
“This plant was the first customer I worked with.” And so TDM
and Schuster practically migrated together to the new location.
Despite this, it was a new beginning. Because Herzog decided
to deliberately leave the existing installation untouched, and
instead build up a new, parallel data base “on the green field”.
Fischinger: “Cleaning everything up would have taken too long.
Step by step, we added the items that we really needed.” A
strong competition between different tool management sys-
tems preceded the reconstruction and TDM emerged as the
winner.
Transmissions for Motorcycles and Electric powered Tools
Approximately 10,000 tool items and tool assemblies for 300
machines are included at present. They serve the production in
four divisions, of which two are major divisions “which account
for approximately 80 to 85 percent of our sales,” as Head of

half comes from the motorcycle sector, 32 percent from the
power-tools sector.” Premium describes not only Herzog’s
concept, premium also describes its customers. In the mo-
torcycle sector, they are above all the renowned brands BMW
and KTM.
In electrical tools, one finds such renowned names as Hilti,
TTI, Festool, Fein and Bosch, above all in the emerging field of
rechargeable batteries. The e-bike is becoming even more im-
portant. But isn’t it really all the same if the drive comes from a
combustion or an electric motor? Not at all, as Tonin explains:
“Electric drives demand a much higher consistency and, with
it, precision from the components.”
Begin with TDM Base- and Tool Crib Module
Before, tools were managed very traditionally by the depart-
ments. Deposited in tool cabinets, what took place was only
a inventory management. If a tool was needed, it was simply
ordered. Fischinger remembers: “Special tools, particularly,
were stored in the departments and were always being looked
for.” This was compounded by tying up capital because, for ex-
ample, identical cutting inserts were in the inventory multiple
times.
Once the decision was made for TDM with Base- and Tool
Crib Module, we first invested in a tool lift and registered the
items in TDM. “Since then, we have cleaner planning, the tool
comes to the machine when it’s needed and is afterwards re-
turned to the central tool crib; this has significantly improved
availability and planning,” says Fischinger, very pleased.
They do not deny, however, that the workers had misgivings,
at first, about not getting the necessary tools at any hour. Tool
cabinets in the departments with the TDMstoreasy module
have proven themselves to be quick problem-solver for man-
agement.
Nevertheless, many tools are stored centrally. This meant a
long path for the workers, who had to do the tool presetting
on the machine themselves.
“Not optimal,” concluded Fischinger, “We therefore set up a
tool service which functions as a mailbox system as an interim
solution.” Employees now toss their requirement forms in the
department mailbox, which is then emptied every two hours.
The tool service mounts the tool assemblies, presets them
and delivers them directly to the machine. But this is only an
intermediate step. Fischinger: “In the future, the system, itself,
will recognize which tasks are in the pipeline and which tools
are needed.” The TDM Machine Tool Manager has already
been purchased and the interface with the presetting module
is being implemented. The first employees have been working
with TDM in central tool presetting since the beginning of the
year.
This offers several advantages. The workers see in advance
which tasks are coming. They can order the necessary tools in
peace and no longer run back and forth through the hall. The
time they have gained they use for more important things like
process optimization. Since optimization measures are auto-
matically reported back with the tool, they are immediately
available for further batches.
Transmission components for premium customers
Herzog GmbH, founded in 1958 in Schramberg, along with its sister companies mG miniGears SpA in Padua and China be-
longs to the hGears-Group. The hGears Group is an investment of the holding company Finatem in Frankfurt am Main, which
supports middle-sized business with the implementation of growth strategies. hGears had sales last year of 136 million
Euros, of which three percent goes to research and development. About 1,000 employees work in three factories in Germany,
Italy and China of which approximately 450 are with Herzog, which achieved sales of 67.3 million Euros in 2015. They manu-
facture precision turned parts, drive elements and transmission components. Their production range includes turned parts,
gears, control discs, crank webs, connecting rods and cam shafts made from metal or plastic. They are delivered as single
products, components or complex system solutions. Core competencies at Herzog GmbH are turning, interlocking, gear
hobbing, gear grinding, internal spaces as well as internal and external centerless grinding. These machining technologies
are complemented by tool design, prototype design and sample manufacturing. Customers come from the premium sec-
tors of the motorcycle industry, electrical tools, heating and HVAC systems, the textile industry as well as electrical tools and
mechanical engineering and fluidics.

The implementation of TDM at Herzog
is closely associated with one person:
Christian Fischinger. The trained tool-
maker and metal industry foreman
has himself worked as a setter and
learned the job from scratch. Today
he leads the Tool Management at
Herzog GmbH.
Mr. Fischinger, how did you come
to the decision to manage tools
with TDM?
Although we already had TDM in
house, in 2010 and ’11 we again thor-
oughly researched the market offer-
ings in the context of a engineering
thesis. A wide variety of systems were
assessed and we did reference visits.
There was a strict selection process
from which TDM emerged as the win-
ner.
What do you appreciate the most
about TDM?
What is decisive for me is the trans-
parency we have achieved with TDM.
It really goes back to two topics: first
of all, the pure tool dispensing and
since this year tool management,
which has now really earned this
name. I now simply see immediately
where my tool is at what point in time
and what its condition is. Even when it
is at an external service for regrinding.
What is your approach to imple-
mentation?
First, one should start in sub-areas
with a few basic modules. To convert
a whole factory in one go would have
overwhelmed us, which is surely the
case for comparable manufacturers.
Second – and this is a very impor-
tant point for me – the employees in
tool dispensing and on the machines
must be brought along. You have to
keep explaining what the advantages
are, not only for the business, but for
each individual.
So after initial skepticism, we have
managed to have other areas in the
factory now calling for the TDM Sys-
tem.
Highlight SAP Interface
An “absolute highlight,” according to Fischinger, is, however,
the customer-specific interface with the ERP software. TDM
man Schuster: “We developed it in close cooperation with
Herzog and are further expanding it.” Integrating TDM into
SAP was a requirement, since Herzog plans and procures
everything using SAP. Fischinger: “The same master data list
should be available in both systems.” TDM and SAP now ac-
cess the same TDM-database. New tools are entered in SAP,
used tools in TDM, because only TDM understands the differ-
ence between new and used. In addition, TDM reports if tool
inventories fall short. Christian Fischinger: “This will enable us
in the future to determine remaining service life so that we can
plan more optimally.

Fürstenfeld (Oststeiermark, Austria) is Hans-
Peter Sindler’s home and the home base for his
sales and consultancy work for TDM Systems in
Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic
and Slovakia. He has been with TDM Systems
since 2014, so a “young” associate, but an ex-
perienced one. After training in electronics and
precision engineering, he began his field-rep-
resentative career as a service technician for a
medical technology business. In 2006, he joined
Walter Austria as Sales Director and became a
tool expert.
“Machines and tools are today at the high-
est technical level and further cost savings on
this side are almost impossible,” says Sindler.
“Businesses should not scrimp on qualified
personnel. Improvements can only be achieved
through shorter design, planning and setup
times with the help of digitization.” This is pre-
cisely what he explains to the customers and
offers TDM as a sophisticated solution.
Sindler enjoys his job – because it is important
for the future of the machining industry and be-
cause he has found a “second home” at TDM
Systems besides Fürstenfeld.

Gery Buk has worked as Project Manager and
Head of Service for TDM Systems in the USA since
2006. After several years in Tübingen, he went first
to Chicago. He now lives in Denver and plans the
service and engineering activities for the American
market from there.
Gery Buk came to the Tübingen software company back in
1999, and has now been a committed member of the team for
17 years. “I was number 20,” he declares proudly, “which means
the 20th employee at TDM Systems, overall. Now we are at
almost a hundred employees.”
After his training as an industrial engineer at machine tool
builder Trumpf, Gery Buk completed his degree at the Reutlin-
gen University of Applied Science in the field of production
management. Here he first came into contact with the topic of
Tool Data Management. “The Managing Director of the former
Walter Information Systems GmbH, Jürgen Auer, gave a pre-
sentation with an introduction to TDM,” he remembers. “Be-
cause of my education, I was familiar with the problem that
there are often no tool data available in manufacturing. And
with TDM Systems, there was finally someone there who ad-
dressed this problem. I appreciated that from the beginning.”
Following his passion, he started at the Tübingen software
company immediately upon graduating. From the beginning,
he was responsible for the hotline and service, but also for

training and customer installations. His many years of experi-
ence and the accompanying expertise were the main reasons
he went to America to support customers there as Head of
Service in 2006.
Eric Graber also belongs to his on-site team and has support-
ed him in the USA since 2013. Eric Graber, previously Manu-
facturing Engineer and Administrator at Siemens for TDM
Systems applications there, is responsible for the interfaces to
CAD/CAM systems.
Advice and Technical Know-how
For Gery Buk, the most exciting part about his job is working
together with his sales specialists to find out precisely what
the customer needs – no more and no less. This is achieved
with the right advice and technical know-how. “It’s great to
be right there with the customer from the beginning to the
end of the process,” he says, “firstly, it is important to offer the
customer consultation in the planning phase and clarify all of
the technical questions: What does the customer need, what
does he want and how do we bring both of those together?
Now we need to determine in the implementation phase how
and where TDM can be installed. Finally, we offer the cus-
tomer training so that he can use the software efficiently. The
customer is thus never left alone with any of the steps in the
implementation process.”
For Gery Buk, service doesn’t end with successful installa-
tion of the software. “We keep advising our customers so that
we can offer them the best possible Tool Data Management.
A part of this, we are always ready to be the first point of con-
tact for questions and problems.”
This close customer contact is something that appealed to
him from the very beginning. “At the beginning, we didn’t yet
have an installation routine. The installation didn’t simply
happen, say, with the push of a button; everything had to be
recorded by hand,” he remembers, “because of this, contact
with the customer was even closer than it is today.” American
customers are also different from the German ones. “Before
customers from America buy software, they want to have ev-
erything explained in a detailed manner,” Buk thinks, “Espe-
cially in the USA, it is often the case that the end user is with
you in the boat and takes part in the discussion. So you hear
about a customer’s problems directly,” first hand. He laughs
and adds: “The Americans are also a little bit more relaxed. If
something occasionally doesn’t work as it’s supposed to, im-
mediately, they would rather wait for a complete solution than
be satisfied with an ad hoc response.”
Knowledge creates trust
For Gery Buk it is, above all, the accumulated knowledge
that the American customers value and what creates trust
in him and TDM Systems. “‘Made in Germany’ is not just a
slogan to the Americans,” he says, “it stands for quality one
can depend on. And that is exactly what we want to offer
our customers.”
What distinguishes his employer is for Gery Buk, first and
foremost, the development of the last few years. Consistent
evolution of software from simple Tool Data Management
through to the new modules like TDM Global Line and in-
terfaces with CAD/CAM data. “It is the commitment of each
individual worker that distinguishes TDM Systems.,” he says.
“I’ve worked together with many colleagues for many years;
despite our size, we are still like a family.”

New Hot Spot for Tool
Lifecycle Management
The new website for TDM Systems has been online since the 31st of May. It was redesigned from ground
up and offers, in addition to a new design, comprehensive information about businesses and topics con-
cerning Tool Lifecycle Management.
If you followed TDM Systems on Twitter, you could get a first
glance at the new web design in mid-May: Puzzle piece by
puzzle piece, the home page of the new website was revealed
daily. In the maschine+werkzeug newsletter, the new look was
presented in June as the “Website of the Week”.
TDM Arena – centerpiece of the new website
The biggest innovation is the TDM Arena. It is the centerpiece
of the new website and the digital hot spot for news, inter-
views, user voices and technical information about TDM/TLM.
As an information spot, TDM Arena offers every opportunity
to learn about developments and trends. The website gen-
erally follows a unified concept: On the one hand, it informs
visitors with current information on business and TLM topics.
On the other, it provides a communications center in which all
threads converge and through which all TDM Systems’ impor-
tant communications channels (YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn,
etc.) can be reached.
New imagery, clear contents
“We wanted a website that our customers and interested par-
ties would enjoy coming back to visit. That is what we have
achieved,” said Sabine Bräuning, happily.
The Marketing and Media Assistant supervised the website
project. She was instrumental in the technological develop-
ment of the website and updates the pages with the newest
topics. In addition, she coordinates the continued expansion
of the website.
“We paid a lot of attention to the new, clearly-arranged page
structure, in particular and the carefully-chosen information-
al content,” according to Bräuning. The comprehensive solu-
tions for Tool Data Managment are now represented with an
appropriate emphasis on clearly-structured contents. With
the new imagery and appealing design, all of our goals were
accomplished so that future visitors feel well and properly
informed.
We wanted a website that our customers
and interested parties would enjoy coming back
to visit. That is what we achieved.
