FORMS - Collect Data at Beginning of the Year

 Wiki
 Quest

All About
   Me!
• Collect Data – for me or for the students

• Grade self or partners on projects

• Data goes into a Spreadsheet. Students can analyze the data
collected individually or in small groups

** PROTECT the original data sheet!

Have students make their own copy.
   – File, Make a Copy for a new file
   – Duplicate the sheet in the same file
Project Work
Students make a copy of the entire spreadsheet
               and share it with me.
1. At the top of the spreadsheet, Click File, Make a Copy. This
will create a new file for the student.

2. They will need to Share it with you.
You will have multiple files this way.

If they mess it all up, no worries! they can
re-duplicate a new data sheet.

** Be sure to “protect” the data sheet first.
In Class Work
Students duplicate their own copy of the data sheet
              in the same spreadsheet.
 1. On the tab at the bottom, click on the tab arrow and select
DUPLICATE. (This will keep all student work in this one
     spreadsheet.)
2. RENAME the document you duplicated.
    1) Click on the Tab Arrow at the bottom
    2) Select Rename
    3) Type your name, hit enter.

If they mess it all up, no worries! they can re-
duplicate a new data sheet.

** Be sure to “protect” the data sheet first. **
Collect Self Data - Measurements

                           Students record
                           their measurements
                           once a month and
                           enter their data into
                           this form.

                           The form records
                           the date
                           automatically for
                           future data
                           analysis.
Collect Self Data - Measurements
The results go into a spreadsheet for future data analysis.

Each student makes a
copy of the data sheet
(duplicate) to create their
own graphs.
Collect Partner Grades

                           Students
                     confidentially grade
                     their partners after
                       a project is over.

Following written directions
is a skill not yet mastered
  by many middle school
           students.

Google Docs for Project Questions
Google Document for Student Collaboration
For this project, students submitted their ideas via a Document that they
shared with me.

Then, through commenting:
   • I could ask questions or make suggestions for improvement.
   • They could work together at home by typing comments.
Student Collaboration

This student’s partner was out sick on the planning day.
However, they could still “work together” on their Google Doc.

Working with Dwight
                          by: Julian Ramirez
Andy Bernard can build a suit of armor in 3 hours, but Dwight K.
Schrute can build one in 2. If they work together (presuming they
don’t slow each other down) how long would it take for them to
make a suit of armor together?

Question – First Page
Dwight’s time + Andy’s time = one suit of armor

1/3m+1/2m=1

6(1/3m+1/2m)=6

6/1(1/3)=2

6/1(1/2)=3

2m+3m=6

5m=6

5m6

m=5/6

            John’s Consecutive Integer Problem
Sponge Bob needs to feed Gary 2 pounds more of food on
Tuesday than Monday and 2 pounds than Tuesday on
Wednesday. On Thursday Gary eats 2 more pounds of food
than on Wednesday and on Friday he eats 2 more pounds
than on Thursday. Gary eats 40 pounds of food total Monday
through Friday. How many pounds of food does Sponge Bob
need to feed Gary on Wednesday?

                       The Answer

 Equation:
 5x + 4 - 4 = 40
     -4 -4
     5x - 4 = 36
       + 4 +4
         5x = 40
            x=8
 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 12

On my Wednesday Sponge Bob needs to feed Gary 8
 pounds of food.

Thanks so much to Crystal Kirch for the amazing tutorial found on her blog! It
includes a step by step YouTube tutorial!

• Students make a copy of the
  template.
• Each student enters their own
  concepts on their own
  spreadsheet.
• I use ImportRange to combine
  into my spreadsheet.
CountIf and Conditional Formatting Features
Copy just the summary
by topic to a separate
sheet.

Conditional
Formatting show me at
a glance what students
need more work with.
Thank you!

  • 2. • Why Google Docs • Ways to use Google Docs in the classroom • Teacher Tools - Ways to use Google Docs to simply your life • Advanced Features – Formulas for Standards Based Grading (Concept Scores). ImportRange, CountIf, Conditional Formatting • What are you doing with Google Docs • Questions? 
  • 3. • Ease of Use - No need to buy and install software. If you have Gmail, you already have a Google Account! • Collaboration - Everyone can work on the same document together for every Google Doc platform! • Real Time Updating – Automatic updating eliminates students sending you multiple versions of their work. • File Management – Once shared, a teacher has a copy of the file. No duplicates. • Formulas – Make your life organized and easy!
  • 4. • Forms (surveys) • Spreadsheets (Excel) • Document (Word) • Presentation (Powerpoint)
  • 5. FORMS - Collect Data at Beginning of the Year Wiki Quest All About Me!
  • 6. • Collect Data – for me or for the students • Grade self or partners on projects • Data goes into a Spreadsheet. Students can analyze the data collected individually or in small groups ** PROTECT the original data sheet! Have students make their own copy. – File, Make a Copy for a new file – Duplicate the sheet in the same file
  • 7. Project Work Students make a copy of the entire spreadsheet and share it with me. 1. At the top of the spreadsheet, Click File, Make a Copy. This will create a new file for the student. 2. They will need to Share it with you. You will have multiple files this way. If they mess it all up, no worries! they can re-duplicate a new data sheet. ** Be sure to “protect” the data sheet first.
  • 8. In Class Work Students duplicate their own copy of the data sheet in the same spreadsheet. 1. On the tab at the bottom, click on the tab arrow and select DUPLICATE. (This will keep all student work in this one spreadsheet.) 2. RENAME the document you duplicated. 1) Click on the Tab Arrow at the bottom 2) Select Rename 3) Type your name, hit enter. If they mess it all up, no worries! they can re- duplicate a new data sheet. ** Be sure to “protect” the data sheet first. **
  • 9. Collect Self Data - Measurements Students record their measurements once a month and enter their data into this form. The form records the date automatically for future data analysis.
  • 10. Collect Self Data - Measurements The results go into a spreadsheet for future data analysis. Each student makes a copy of the data sheet (duplicate) to create their own graphs.
  • 11. Collect Partner Grades Students confidentially grade their partners after a project is over.
  • 12. • Analyze Data, Make Charts and Graphs • Sorting, Simple Formulas • Paperless Distribution Of Projects and Rubrics (Spreadsheet) • Student Maintained Concept Sheets for SBG (Standards Based Grading)

  • 35. Working with Dwight by: Julian Ramirez Andy Bernard can build a suit of armor in 3 hours, but Dwight K. Schrute can build one in 2. If they work together (presuming they don’t slow each other down) how long would it take for them to make a suit of armor together? Question – First Page
  • 36. Dwight’s time + Andy’s time = one suit of armor 1/3m+1/2m=1 6(1/3m+1/2m)=6 6/1(1/3)=2 6/1(1/2)=3 2m+3m=6 5m=6 5m6 m=5/6 Solution – Next Page
  • 37. k Question – First Page By: John Bubak John’s Consecutive Integer Problem Sponge Bob needs to feed Gary 2 pounds more of food on Tuesday than Monday and 2 pounds than Tuesday on Wednesday. On Thursday Gary eats 2 more pounds of food than on Wednesday and on Friday he eats 2 more pounds than on Thursday. Gary eats 40 pounds of food total Monday through Friday. How many pounds of food does Sponge Bob need to feed Gary on Wednesday?
  • 38. Solution – Next Page By: John Bubak The Answer Equation: 5x + 4 - 4 = 40 -4 -4 5x - 4 = 36 + 4 +4 5x = 40 x=8 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 On my Wednesday Sponge Bob needs to feed Gary 8 pounds of food.

Editor's Notes

  1. For you (as a student) to do now:
  2. For you (as a student) to do now:
  3. Students record their concept scores after each assessment with color.  This sheet is shared with me and their parents at the beginning of the year so that parents can keep up with their students progress.I create and share one document that includes instructions, data entry templates, and the rubric for paperless project management.  I use Spreadsheet for this for the ease of multiple pages and duplication.
  4. Students create word problems into their own GDoc or a single teacher created presentation. Students write stories, do shorter projects, and write reflections on larger projects in Document.  I can go in and edit or make comments on their pages for them to work on and correct.  They can also comment to each other with working together.
  5. After giving them a set of “seemingly mysterious” directions, CLICK
  6. RUBRIC – student was able to follow instructions.
