• Founded by Larry page and Sergey Brin in 1996 as a reasearch project while
the two were attending Stanford University in pursuit of PhD’s.
• Initial investment of $100k
• They offered to sell their search engine to Excite in 1999 for $1 mil
• In 2004, the went public with an IPO that netted $2 billion from $20 million
shares with a market capitalization of $23 billion
• In 2005, they bought Keyhole Inc. and converted it into Google Earth
• In 2007, Google bought YouTube for $1.6 billion in stock
• During the same year they bought DoubleClick for $3.2 bil to increase their
internet ad servicing revenue
• Late 2011, Google buys Motorola Mobility to enhance and advance their
Android operating system through the patents held by Motorola.
• Over 1 bil unique visitors per month
• Now they gross roughly $38 bil/yr w/ 32k employees

• Google thinks that public information is just that, public.
• Privacy, what privacy?
• Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, declared in December 2009: "If you have
something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be
doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality
is that search engines—including Google—do retain this information for
some time and it's important, for example, that we are all subject in the
United States to the Patriot Act and it is possible that all that information
could be made available to the authorities.“
• When collecting images for the Google Maps Street View feature during
2006-2010, they “accidentally” collected 600 gbs of data about WiFi
networks and small snippets of e-mail.
• Google apologized.
• They have also been criticized severely for tracking search history and
patterns using tools such as Google Analytics.
