 The film we have chosen for this project is
Goodfellas, the reason for this is because we feel
that this is a very exciting film for the audience to
watch as well the different aspects covered within
the film such as the Mise-en-scène, Editing,
Sound, Narrative and the Cinematography.
•By Saif Mahmood
 Mise-en-scène is French for “putting into
the scene”.
 This was first applied to the practice of
directing plays.
 This means what appears in front of the camera:
 Setting
 Props
 Costume
 Lighting
 Staging
 What you place in a shot, and where in the frame you
place it.
Setting
Lighting
Props
Costumes
Staging
 Lighting is a key part of establishing a good theme within the
film, it allows to identify key moments of the characters mood
within Goodfellas.
 Scorsese used lighting to reflect on the characters mood within
Goodfellas, an example of this is used within the opening scene.
 Through out the opening scene, the back of the car’s light
reflects on the mood of the characters, for example this red light
gives the feeling of blood and death to the audience’s attention
without any blood being shown. As this is the opening scene of
the movie the lighting is very important in terms of establishing
the theme used within the film.
 The second picture has dark red lights shining towards the two
characters faces, they look forward to something, they look to be
the most dangerous characters within the film.
 The 3rd image presents Henry looking terrified, the light reflects
on his mood in terms of his facial expressions showing him being
anxious and worried of what is going to happen next.
 Staging is a crucial element of Mise en scene,
the reason for this is because it shows to the
audience how actors are used within a scene.
This is linked to facial expression’s and body
language of the character.
 Scorsese skill to frame characters and
express their actions in momentous way
was great to watch.
 One of the most interesting scene’s where
staging reflects the characters meanings
are when ‘Tommy’ and ‘Henry’ are
positioned in the centre of both shots.
 Setting portrays a significant visual
component of a film, it consist of all that the
viewer sees which notifies time and place
apart from costume.
 The way how meaning is created by ‘setting’
is Scorsese combines the “Documentary
style” into the setting of his film as he
references key elements of actual events
that occurred within Henry Hill life.
 For example The Bamboo Lounge which was
used in Goodfellas was an actual real life bar
where Henry Hill and his gang used to hang
out in the late 70’s-80’s.
 The film’s documentary atmosphere is
strongly generated within the film, for
example when highlighting these places.
 Scorsese makes full use of voice over
narration and inter-titles to indicate place
and date. This was a constant theme that
was used when it came to different locations
used within the film, they used Ray Liotta
voice as narration in order to engage the
audience with the storyline more.

Goodfellas (new presentation)

  • 1.  The film we have chosen for this project is Goodfellas, the reason for this is because we feel that this is a very exciting film for the audience to watch as well the different aspects covered within the film such as the Mise-en-scène, Editing, Sound, Narrative and the Cinematography.
  • 3.  Mise-en-scène is French for “putting into the scene”.  This was first applied to the practice of directing plays.  This means what appears in front of the camera:  Setting  Props  Costume  Lighting  Staging  What you place in a shot, and where in the frame you place it.
  • 4.
  • 6.
  • 7.
  • 8.  Lighting is a key part of establishing a good theme within the film, it allows to identify key moments of the characters mood within Goodfellas.  Scorsese used lighting to reflect on the characters mood within Goodfellas, an example of this is used within the opening scene.  Through out the opening scene, the back of the car’s light reflects on the mood of the characters, for example this red light gives the feeling of blood and death to the audience’s attention without any blood being shown. As this is the opening scene of the movie the lighting is very important in terms of establishing the theme used within the film.  The second picture has dark red lights shining towards the two characters faces, they look forward to something, they look to be the most dangerous characters within the film.  The 3rd image presents Henry looking terrified, the light reflects on his mood in terms of his facial expressions showing him being anxious and worried of what is going to happen next.
  • 9.  Staging is a crucial element of Mise en scene, the reason for this is because it shows to the audience how actors are used within a scene. This is linked to facial expression’s and body language of the character.  Scorsese skill to frame characters and express their actions in momentous way was great to watch.  One of the most interesting scene’s where staging reflects the characters meanings are when ‘Tommy’ and ‘Henry’ are positioned in the centre of both shots.
  • 10.
  • 11.  Setting portrays a significant visual component of a film, it consist of all that the viewer sees which notifies time and place apart from costume.  The way how meaning is created by ‘setting’ is Scorsese combines the “Documentary style” into the setting of his film as he references key elements of actual events that occurred within Henry Hill life.
  • 12.  For example The Bamboo Lounge which was used in Goodfellas was an actual real life bar where Henry Hill and his gang used to hang out in the late 70’s-80’s.  The film’s documentary atmosphere is strongly generated within the film, for example when highlighting these places.  Scorsese makes full use of voice over narration and inter-titles to indicate place and date. This was a constant theme that was used when it came to different locations used within the film, they used Ray Liotta voice as narration in order to engage the audience with the storyline more.

Editor's Notes

  1.   I will use images to illustrate to the audience how Mise-en-scene is used within the film.
  2. These images represent different aspects of Mise-en-scène from the film Goodfellas. This image represents the different actors within the film. The props that are used within the film guns- shows a sign of danger. The setting where it shows a mid shot of the characters both looking at their watches, location outside a restaurant. The lighting showing a close up on a man full with blood his face. The different types of costumes the characters are wearing.
  3. As you can see through these images these props are very dangerous objects. There 3 different props used which are the shovel, the gun and the knife, all of these weapons show us as an audience member these people are cruel and dangerous. Within the first image Jimmy is holding the shovel, the person in the middle Tommy is preparing to pull out something out of his inside pocket and the last character the driver (Henry Hill) who is just witnessing something bad about to happen. The 3rd image has used out of focus shot where the camera is focusing all on the gun rather than the dead body. These props within the opening scene of the film signal us as an audience member that these people are really dangerous as well as the central characters of the movie. The use of knife and gun was common theme within the film.
  4. Here are couple omage of the costumes used. A prime example of how costume reflects on the meaning of (Mise-en-scene) is Henry Hill, these two images reflect on the character’s rise from a small young boy into a matured gangster. The costume identifies how Henry’s reputation was low at the time and it represent what type of clothes he was wearing when he was young. This type of costume would have been worn by many of youths. The first picture also represents a sign of how innocence he looks as a kid, (joyful, happy) . Where as in the other image it represents a sign of power he has gained, his rise from being a low key man in terms of dress sense into a popular outfit. His costume changes to the typical mafia suit and tie.

  6. Scorsese has used his characters well within this scene, the staging reflects on how the actors are used. Scorsese has positioned the important characters ‘Tommy’ and ‘Henry’ in the middle of the frame in both shots he cuts back and forth to. But he has also provide additional characters on the side of the two in order to gain attention from the audience letting them know that Henry and Tommy are the fundamental characters without having to say it. Also placing bottles of alcohol on the table, the actors holding a glass and Henry smoking a cigarette forms a scene that notifies us that these men are in a leisurely setting. http://gangsterfan.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/narrative-function-of-mise-en-scene-in.html http://frankums101.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/narrative-function-of-mise-en-scene.html
