2. The Director
• The Director of the GoodFellas is Martin Scorsese. He has
previously directed, other classic hits such as, The
Departed, Aviator, Shutter Island, Taxi Driver and recently
in cinemas Hugo.
• Scorsese first directed film was titled I call first, and was
released in 1967. Scorsese first major successful film was
Taxi Driver, which was released in 1976.
• He was born in November 1942, in New York City and was
raised in a neighbourhood called little Italy.
3. Social / Historical / Political
• Goodfellas is based upon the non fiction book Wise guy by
crime reporter Nicholas Pileggi. The film is adapted from
the book as it follows the Mobster Henry Hill throughout his
life.
• Henry Hill entered the life of crime at the age of 12, where
he worked as a gofer, for Paul Vario, who was the boss of
Henry Hill’s working class Irish / Italian background. As he
thought it was a dazzling and Prestigious lifestyle. From
this day on he was lead to a life of crime and violence.
4. Critical Response
• Goodfellas were nominated for number of awards, such
as, Golden Globe Award, Academy Awards and Many
more. Joe Pesci won best supporting actor award.
British Academy film award, for Best film, Best
Director, Best Adapated Screen Play, Best editing and
Best costume.
• Goodfellas has been rated an 8.8 on IMDB, and
receiving a 97% on Rotten Tomotatoes.
5. Reasons for Studying Goodfellas
• The other film I watched was Metropolis, and I decided
to case study this film as, I preferred the film as a
whole and it was interesting to learn about Henry Hill,
and how the Goodfellas was based on a true story.
