But the world has changed
since the 1900s
#SIC2014 @jakebenn
Back Then Today
Work was piecemeal.
Components could be
developed independently.
Work must be done in teams.
Components are highly
interconnected.

Leaders today face the
same challenges as
Software Developers
#SIC2014 @jakebenn
So why not use Agile as a
management philosophy?
#SIC2014 @jakebenn
Advantages of Agile Leadership
Progress gauged on empirical results, not paper representations
Improvements get into “market” faster
Testing can start earlier and inform future decisions
Creates a sense of accomplishment—a powerful motivator
Allows learning and adaption for future Sprints

Five Functions of Management
1. To forecast and plan
2. To organize
3. To command or direct
4. To coordinate
5. To control

Management”
Key Principles
Give workers clear instructions on what to do and supervise them while they do it.
Divide work between managers and workers, so that the managers plan
scientifically”what is to be done, and the workers then do it.
“All possible brain work should be removed from the
shop”

  • #3 POP: 1996. Digitally Centered. Based here in Seattle. Microsoft, Target, Nike, Pokemon, Home Depot, Getty Images. Software Developer with over a decade of operations experience, I tend to looking pragmatically and holistically about how businesses can take advantage of new technologies.
  • #4 We live in this amazing time when the advances in technology are far reaching and really cool. They hold a lot of promise.

  • #8 In order to deal with the crazy pace of change, we need to come to terms with our basic human instinct to gain control and causal understanding
  • #19 And I’m talking about project management broadly here.

  • #64 Game developers have mastered the art of motivation. Gameification is a very popular concept. But I don’t think badges or levels necessarily translate well in the workplace. There is something more fundamental that we need to address. Interestingly Agile, as a methodology, hits on all of the same characteristics.
  • #71 Piece rate to combat soldiering
  • #72 What we need now is way to get back to the future. We have all this great technology just waiting to exploited. Instead, we we’re stuck in silos (another artifact of industrial era thinking), we’re waiting for that big initiative that months away from starting, etc.
