The answer is simply: having and implementing a vision that will allow it to secure its future in this age of disruption — the Global Logistics Hub Initiative. Jamaica’s Global Logistics Hub Initiative is Jamaica’s response for building a resilient and sustainable nation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), robots, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) — the Fourth industrial Revolution — are all tech terms that have moved into the mainstream of our everyday conversations. Unfortunately the talk is usually one of doom and gloom, punctuated by predictions such as: Robots could displace 800 million jobs. With such grim predictions, who would not pay attention? So what can a small island developing state like Jamaica do to get ready for this future?
It’s important to understand that, as William Gibson stated: “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.” The Fourth industrial Revolution is already here — it’s just not evenly distributed. And this represents an opportunity for Jamaica.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution can be boiled down to three things:
1. Connectivity
2. Flows
3. Management of connectivity and flows.
In a word: logistics.

Automation, nationalism and social change among key global trends impacting corporate leaders
Brunswick Insight and Milken Institute Release Global horizon scan
On behalf of the Milken Institute, Brunswick Insight conducted a Global horizon scan of futurists and business leaders across the globe, identifying emerging themes impacting corporate leaders to dominate on a global scale over the next five years. Among other findings, three key “Horizon Issues” were identified:
1. Automation’s impact on economic inequality: While automation is linked to technological advances, it also leads to a changing global workforce, growing wage and education gaps, and increasing economic inequality.
2. Stalled globalization and rise of nationalism: Horizon Scanners were quick to identify the tension between globalism and nationalism. Political fragmentation, primarily in Europe, will have mostly negative implications on free trade, technological advances, and the global economy.
3. Keeping up with social change: Participants identified social consciousness and corporate responsibility as growing trends as the public demands accountability. The rise of women in leadership, diverse boards, and an aging population is also top-of-mind.

Advancing Reinaldo Gonsalves’ Model of Global Economic InsertionIan Walcott-Skinner
This paper is located in what is referred to as policy critique within the theoretical framework of International Political Economy (IPE) which, by origin, seeks to problematize issues of policy. In 1994, celebrated Brazilian economist, Reinaldo Gonsalves produced an important thesis and model on how to measure a country’s global insertion. At that time, Gonsalves could not have foreseen the influence of the Internet on global trade or on domestic trade policies. As such, the issue of global digital connectivity now presents itself as another pillar to measure global insertion. By examining regional Caribbean policy in this regard, this is an opportunity to advance Gonsalves’ model stimulate further on the opportunities associated with global digital connectivity.

Over the past few months we have been running a number of workshops focused on helping organisations to identify and develop responses to emerging global and corporate risks. Working with companies, government agencies and advisory groups, we have been interrogating the insights from the Future Agenda programme to highlight those issues that provide the greatest potential challenge and also could have the most significant impact going forward. At a time when growing uncertainty and ambiguity are top of mind for many, we thought a brief summary of the most frequent topics being explored may be of wider interest.
In this summary we have therefore highlighted ten key global risks and ten key corporate risks that multiple organisations are seeing as high priority / impact for the next decade:

• Speed to scale accelerating and proving more disruptive impact
• Truth and illusion shifting view of what is credible and why
• The human touch being increasingly important in a digital world
• The rise of machines as AI and automation are both threat and opportunity

Describe briefly FIVE major developments over the past twenty years or so that have led to
globalisation.
Solution
Globalisation refers to the closer integration of countries and people around the world. It is the
result of a number of factors, some unrelated, some interconnected, some of which are briefly
described here.
Reduced trade barriers
Trade barriers have been loosened and this has been a driver of globalisation. In recent years,
the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which comprises over 150 countries has been prominent
in advocating free trade and has been instrumental in reducing barriers to trade in goods and
services.
Improved transportation
Transportation systems, especially rail, shipping and air travel have improved. More goods than
ever can now be moved relatively easily, quickly and cheaply from where they have been
produced to countries and regions where they are consumed. In particular, the introduction of
cold storage facilities and handling has made a significant difference to the
extent of international trade.
Low cost efficient communication systems
Advances in, and the subsequent spread of, new technologies have revolutionised international
communications and encouraged the development of global patterns of production and
consumption. It is now possible for people to communicate with each other instantaneously and
meet regularly, despite living and working in different parts of the world. As such,
videoconferencing, email and webcams have all been significant developments.
Increased movement of capital and technology
Easier access and cheaper transport has led to increased movements of capital and technology
across borders. Inevitably, this has, in turn, impacted on local cultures, knowledge sharing and
learning as people travel further.
Production efficiencies
The development of industrial and agricultural production processes through greater automation
and improved methods has decreased reliance on labour for basic agricultural and production
needs. This has led to a redeployment of people to satisfy global consumer needs and wants.
Improved financial systems
The efficient and safe transfer of funds from the buyer to the seller is essential and so
improvements in the financial systems have been important in developing international trade.
There has been an enormous expansion of international financial markets. In addition, the growth
of international financial institutions has enabled capital to be obtained in the cheapest markets
and this would enable large projects to be undertaken in most countries and enable the countries
to exploit their natural resources and skills.
Emergence of BRIC economies
There has been a large increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing to developing and
transition economies. The emergence of the BRIC economies (Brazil, Russia, India and China),
plus others such as Indonesia and Mexico has fuelled world trade and globalisation. Their
declining dependence on agriculture and governmen.
