BIM and the FIDIC family of contracts: a status report - Bernd Kordes at OICE...Giacomo Bergonzoni
BIM level 2 is already widely introduced and working. Since every party works in its own system today’s contractual relationships and insurance cover continue to fulfil the requirements.
•BIM level 3 is where the big changes are needed, since all parties to a project will have access and edit facilities to all data. This is where FIDIC might have a need to adapt its family of contracts to address the new working environment. Some examples of issues popping up:
–Responsibility for cyber security
–Liability for incorrect information
–Ownership of data
–Intellectual property rights
–Liability if the information is subsequently used for illegal purposes
–integration with new insurance packages

OVERVIEW // 21
OVERVIEW
THE NEED FOR BIM MANAGERS
Advanced BIM technology is moving ahead
quickly, as BIM software programs improve
modeling and project implementation
procedures. The main benefits are
design improvements (according to 69%
of a world survey), savings on design
time (54%), cost savings (35%) and
faster response time to market (24%).
BIM implementation impacts the AECO
industry, with better coordination and
communication between collaborators
using BIM technology. Adopting BIM is
more about learning how to work in unison
with other departments, thus keeping
projects profitable, proficient, sustainable
and on deadline.
BIM is utilized by numerous professionals in the AECO sector: CAD users, designers,
engineers, architects, developers, managers and senior executives, among many
others. BIM usage is highest in small companies worldwide (26%), with 18% in medium-
sized companies and 19% in large companies. By region, BIM usage is highest in North
America with 24%, followed by EMEA (21%) and Asia-Pacific (13%). BIM usage is growing
at a rapid rate, with widespread adoption of BIM by national governments in Singapore,
the UK, Hong Kong, and many others.
The Middle East does not fall far behind. Numerous grand projects have been approved
over the last five years in cities such as Kuwait, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv among many
others, and are in the early processes of civil engineering, new real estate projects and
developments.

Simulated real-world workflows show participants how to work on practical projects
from anywhere in the world, giving them experience working in a collaborative
international environment.
Collaborative work infrastructure on the cloud (BIM servers) compatible with BIM
software allows work to occur simultaneously on a project with other members of the
team. As the projects are all done on cloud servers, professors can access the projects
as participants are working on them and give group and individualized feedback.
Multidisciplinary teams ensure that participants have the experience of working
with other professionals in related but distinct fields. Rotating roles within projects
give the participants knowledge of what is necessary from every person within a
BIM project. With this knowledge, a BIM Manager can effectively assign and manage
roles and tasks.
The project management platform also acts as a social platform. Participants are
able to see a list of all of the other participants in the program and their specialties,
fostering an environment for collaboration and networking.
This program encourages and fosters interaction between working professionals from
various backgrounds and disciplines. International collaborative projects provide the
perfect platform for networking opportunities in a natural and conducive setting. After
completing the program, participants will be comfortable working on an international
team from anywhere in the world. Zigurat has an extensive network of over 60,000
alumni and resources to promote continued professional development.
Four program paths to choose from: Revit (Autodesk), ARCHICAD (Graphisoft), Allplan
(Nemetschek), and AECOsim (Bentley). Participants are required to choose at least
two, but are free to take all four and can add/drop program paths at their convenience,
as long as the minimum of two is maintained.
Participants will have access to over 20 licenses to use all of the programs and
plug-ins that will be used throughout the course. With this software, they will learn
how to apply BIM to all aspects of a project, including 3D modeling, measurements,
scheduling/planning, cost estimation/budgeting, energy analysis and efficiency
studies, facility management/operations, mechanical, engineering and plumbing
(MEP), structures, and collision detection/resolution.
The average profile of our participants is 30-45 year old professionals with 5+ years
experience working in the industry. We understand the value of your time, so this
program was developed with careful consideration of working professionals. The
online delivery method allows participants to complete the course at a comfortable
pace in addition to a busy work schedule. In the event that participants cannot attend
our online lectures, presentations and activities, they are recorded and made available
to watch at a time that best suits their schedule. Our professors and program tutors
are available to assist with any questions or concerns that participants may have
during the program, no matter what country, region or time zone they are in.
Our team of global professors are all thought-leaders and respected references in the
industry. All professors in our programs are adjunct professors meaning they work
full-time in their respective fields. This gives them the unique perspective to know
what is needed for participants to successfully enter a competitive international career
market.
Zigurat is well known throughout the industry and we have many global partnerships
and agreements with companies who are always interested in our participants.
Throughout the course of the program, there are many job fairs and opportunities that
are made available through our human resources department and online job-posting
boards. Participants in our program will have the skills to work in a professional
international setting with no additional training expected from their future employer.
Some of our participants have found that they work so well together, that they have
gone on to create their own successful independent BIM consultancies. For our most
successful participants, there are even opportunities to work here with us at Zigurat.

COLLABORATIVE TEAMWORK
INTERNATIONAL GROUP PROJECTS WITH FIVE TO SIX PEOPLE
Processes and methodology make up 80% of BIM, while
technology makes up 20%. This is a statistic confirmed by
professionals throughout the world. It reflects BIM’s role in an
organization’s workflow within a construction project, which
involves various companies and public agents.
Aware of this reality, Zigurat based the course on the concept of
an integrated practice amongst participants. Thus, all projects
are assigned collaboratively via BIM servers provided by BIM
Freelance and Zigurat. For example, students who choose a
Revit (Autodesk) specialty will work directly from Revit Server,
and tasks will be organized jointly with professors through a
Project Management platform like VIEWPOINT for projects.
A digital model is created and analyzed throughout its life cycle,
connecting participants from all over the world in a real-time
working environment. This methodology allows students to
improve workflows and learn with companions working on a
global scale.
More than 50 BIM Teams are created every edition. Each
BIM Team consists of five to six participants with different
professional profiles, so that they can complement one another
(i.e. engineers, architects, etc.).
The BIM roles are rotated within the group, so that each
participant learns firsthand the responsibilities of each of
the profiles on the project. Projects are created using these
collaborative measures in numerous business initiatives, such
as BIM Management Consulting, architecture firms specializing
in BIM, software development firms and technical training
companies.
