Bob Armstrong, Supply Chain Consultant and President, CILT N. America reviews the implications on the movement of goods during the Covid-19 pandemic including the implications of global supply chains on North America and the world
Communities come together after tragic events to help rebuild and support one another. Examples include: the town of Henryville rebuilding after an EF4 tornado; residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast uniting to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, one of the strongest hurricanes in over 100 years; and the entire United States mourning and memorializing the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks when planes were hijacked and crashed into buildings. Communities demonstrate strength and resilience when facing hardship.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks had widespread impacts across political, economic, social, and cultural domains both domestically and internationally. Politically, it led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and increased defense spending. Economically, markets dropped sharply and New York lost jobs and wages, slowing the U.S. and global economies. Socially, travel decreased and anti-Muslim sentiment rose. While some argue it initially unified people, others believe it increased divergence and hostility between countries and religions over time.
The document summarizes some of the key issues that divided the North and South in the lead up to the Civil War. There were cultural, economic, and constitutional differences between the primarily urban North and agricultural South. Slavery was the central issue and a major point of contention, with the South's economy dependent on plantation agriculture and slave labor. States' rights advocates in the South believed individual states should have more power than the federal government.
This document discusses political machines and corruption in government during the late 1800s/early 1900s as well as reforms that took place. It explains that political machines controlled by bosses provided services to immigrants in cities in exchange for votes, leading to corruption exemplified by Boss Tweed and the Tweed Ring in New York City. The Spoils System and lack of accountability caused widespread corruption. The Pendleton Civil Service Act of 1883 helped reform government by establishing a merit-based hiring system. A number of presidents from Grant to Wilson are also assessed as either pursuing reform or maintaining the status quo.
The Roaring 20s, Great Depression and New Dealleighlee218
The document provides an overview of life in the United States during the 1920s period of prosperity and the Great Depression of the 1930s. It describes the economic boom and consumerism of the 1920s, known as the Jazz Age, followed by the stock market crash of 1929 and the onset of the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt responded to the economic crisis with his New Deal programs, which provided relief, recovery, and reform through massive public works projects, social programs, and financial reforms to pull the country out of the Depression.
Canada is ethnic diverse culture, but illegal border crossing is starting to impact the funding of social services
The Liberals have refused to designate all border crossing illegals
Opposition questions the border crossing the government goes off on tangent saying “Opposition voted down the moneys for borders and refugees)
All the opposition as well as majority Canadians want is for the borders to be secure and that people go through the proper process to immigrate to Canada
Canada is heading to a very dangerous slope when it comes to supporting the influx of refugees.
The UN agreement does not say Canada needs to accept all border jumpers.
The Impact of Covid-19 on the Worlds LogisticsGlobal Sources
The logistics sector plays an integral role in facilitating trade and commerce and helping businesses get their products to customers – and the ongoing pandemic has put an unprecedented strain on the industry. Mandated lockdowns and travel restrictions across the globe had disrupted activities at both manufacturing facilities and logistics operations.
In the wake of the disruptions brought by the pandemic, key supply chains in logistics and transportation industries were impeded across air, ocean and land freight sectors. Cargoes were backlogged at major container ports, shipments were delayed, and orders took longer to arrive.
The Impact of COVID-19 on the World’s Logistics takes a hard look at the significant economic impact of the pandemic on the global supply chain and logistics and how businesses are coping with the disruptions. The book gives an outlook of the logistics sector, the challenges in key transportation segments, and what the future holds for the industry and beyond.
Canada has shown global leadership in fighting Covid19 through extensive vaccination efforts, research funding, and collaboration with international partners like the WHO. However, Canada still faces challenges like restrictions on medical supplies from the US and soaring prices. To overcome these issues, Canada secured alternative supply chains, strengthened health measures, and advocates that all countries work together through global health diplomacy to prepare for future pandemics.

The document discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the globalization and interconnectedness of the US healthcare system. It notes that early in the pandemic, the US faced shortages of personal protective equipment and medical supplies due to disruptions in the global supply chain. Further, it outlines how the US relies on other countries, especially China, for manufacturing of drugs, devices, and components essential to modern healthcare. The pandemic also demonstrated how telemedicine has allowed other nations like India to provide remote services to US providers, and how medical tourism allows US citizens to access lower-cost procedures abroad.
Globalization has altered the way we live and earn a livelihood. Consequently, trade and travel have been recognized as significant determinants of the spread of disease. Additionally, the rise in urbanization and the closer integration of the world economy have facilitated global interconnectedness. Therefore, globalization has emerged as an essential mechanism of disease transmission. This paper aims to examine the potential impact of COVID-19 on globalization and global health in terms of mobility, trade, travel, and countries most impacted.
Feb. 19, 2021 Transportation Market - Outbound tender volume index sideways, ...Lindsay M. LaCourse CSM
Current outbound volumes are 42% higher than 2020 and 44% higher than 2019.
Freight volumes have been trending sideways since the first week of January, bouncing between 13,600 and 14,200.
This is typical for January, when freight flows lull in the early weeks of the year. While this year is following a similar pattern, it is at an extraordinarily high level. If the pattern continues, we might expect to see volumes pick up speed toward the end of February.
The document discusses the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a global scale. It states that the world economy will likely go into a recession, with the exceptions of India and China. The United Nations predicts a loss of trillions of dollars in global income and serious trouble for developing countries. It calls for a $2.5 trillion rescue package for developing nations that have been hit hard by capital outflows, growing bond spreads, currency depreciations and lost export earnings. The pandemic will halt progress towards sustainable development goals for many countries lacking resources to properly respond.
While vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 may take time to develop due to virus mutations, stem cell therapy shows promise as it can directly restore damaged lungs, giving patients a better chance of recovery by addressing the primary organ affected by the virus. The pandemic is severely impacting global supply chains and trade as well as tourism-dependent industries like airlines, hotels and restaurants. Some sectors like healthcare and logistics may see growth while retail and tourism face layoffs. Education is adopting online formats and healthcare fields will be in higher demand and receive more investment. Strict preventative measures like masks, handwashing and social distancing are key to containing the virus' spread until a vaccine is available.
The document summarizes information about the COVID-19 pandemic from various sources such as newspapers, social media platforms, and blogs. It discusses how the pandemic has impacted different countries and some key steps governments have taken in response. It also compares the accuracy of information provided on newspapers, social media, and blogs, concluding that newspapers and blogs generally provide more reliable information than social media.

New England Journal of Medicine: Facing the Coronavirus Monster in HaitiStanleylucas
1) Covid-19 has arrived in Haiti and presents major challenges for the country's healthcare system due to factors like poverty, lack of clean water/sanitation, and scarce healthcare resources.
2) The first Covid-19 case was reported on March 19th and the government implemented measures like travel bans and business closures, but a complete shutdown is not feasible for economic reasons.
3) Community engagement is essential to combat stigma and misinformation around Covid-19. The organization has hired community health workers and seen hundreds of patients seeking testing and care.
Paul Young is a CPA and subject matter expert in various areas including risk management, public policy, supply chain management, and environmental issues. The document discusses several topics related to climate change and the environment, including air and water pollution in various countries, forest and land management practices, and government policies around issues like pipelines, carbon taxes, and funding cuts that impact environmental protection. It provides links to additional resources on each topic and takes a skeptical stance on views that blame all environmental problems solely on climate change.
A GCC-wide media analysis of coverage around COVID-19, together with key global headlines for context, which has been compiled using Golin’s Relevance Radar.
This document provides an overview of environmental issues related to air quality, water management, and land management. It discusses key topics like air pollution in various countries, rankings of air quality between countries, the Paris Climate Accord, US withdrawal from the accord, water pollution issues in India and China, forest and land management challenges, and Canada's environmental ranking. The document aims to discuss these issues in a balanced way and note actions already taken by some countries to improve air quality and management of natural resources.
The document discusses the economic benefits of free trade while acknowledging its political challenges. It summarizes the history of textile jobs in North Carolina being lost to foreign competition. While this hurt workers in the short term, the state was able to shift to higher-paying industries like technology and agriculture. Free trade agreements can further benefit countries by increasing food security through international trade and by reducing risks to the global food supply chain through harmonized safety standards. However, opponents often cite emotional examples of job losses to argue against trade.
This document provides an overview and agenda for a presentation on key environmental issues including air quality, water management, and land management. It includes photos of air pollution in various cities, rankings of countries by air quality, information on the Paris Climate Accord and US withdrawal, facts on drinkable water, land management, forest management, navigable waterways, and Great Lakes water levels. It also shares perspectives questioning the costs of air pollution and drivers of climate change policies.
The report identifies opportunities for exporting products from the Dominican Republic to the United States. Four existing products are recommended for more effective marketing: 1) Banana ice cream with superfoods, 2) Virus test kits through partnerships to streamline supply chains, 3) Medical tourism for lower costs, and 4) Low voltage protection equipment. Two new opportunities are renewable water facilities to improve access and automotive replacement parts through established contacts. Government regulations could hinder development but also provide incentives for partnerships.
This presentation discusses air quality. Too much doom and gloom is spread about air pollution and not enough is said on actions done by countries like Canada and USA for the past 25+ years to improve air quality in their various countries

This document discusses challenges in dangerous goods logistics during the Covid-19 pandemic. It outlines several dangerous goods incidents at sea in 2019 caused by misdeclared or undeclared cargo. Possible reasons for incidents include regulatory gaps, improper cargo securing and packaging, and lack of fire protection systems on some vessels. Tools are available to manage dangerous goods, but supply chain complexities have increased under Covid-19 due to budget constraints, lack of technology adoption, and limited resources. Remote training and upgraded technology are suggested for moving forward during the pandemic.
By lowering costs and enticing companies to expand into other markets, the global supply chain aids in increasing the productivity and profitability of manufacturers and industries. Global supply chain management is to maintain the seamless operation of the global networks of producers, suppliers, warehouses, transportation firms, distributors, and retailers.
Aéro Montréal, Quebec's aerospace cluster, is a strategic think tank created in 2006 that groups all the major decision makers in Quebec's aerospace sector, including companies, educational and research institutions, associations and unions.
Aéro Montréal's mission is to mobilize industry players around common goals and concerted actions to increase the cohesion and optimize competitiveness of Quebec’s aerospace cluster. It aims to foster the growth and expansion of the cluster to ensure that it may continue to create wealth for Montreal, Quebec and Canada. Over the years, Aéro Montréal adopted a strategic action plan that includes the creation of working groups. These working groups are dedicated to six areas of intervention, namely supply chain development, branding and promotion, innovation, human resources, defense and national security and commercialization and market development.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

THE CANADA-USA BORDER IS THE LARGEST UNDEFENDED BORDER IN THE
WORLD-WHATS HAPPENING WITH GOODS MOVEMENT BETWEEN CANADA
AND THE USA AND HOW IS OUR TRADE WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD
3. ciltinternational.org3 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• the border was closed to non-essential travel and remains closed
until June 21, 2020
• essential goods include food, life saving medicines, PPE, medical
protective equipment
• trucks crossing every day but can contain most goods and truck
traffic has been down 50%
• restrictions on tourists and day trips by people but essential workers allowed entry
THE CANADA-USA BORDER
4. ciltinternational.org4 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• USA has no distinction between essential and non-essential goods, but a priority
exists
• the border is disproportionately more important to Canada than the US but the
threatened and actual closures have caused disruptions felt through supply chains in
the us especially in the Midwest Northern states where automotive industry has been
shut down
• trade has dropped dramatically in the automotive, steel, and other manufacturing
sectors
TRADE BETWEEN CANADA-USA
5. ciltinternational.org5 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• biggest implication on the border is from 2 factors
• one is directly from COVID-19 but this pandemic will accelerate both.
• (1) the geo-political fall out from US industry being encouraged/forced to decouple from
China and,
• (2) the post pandemic shift to de-risk supply chains and re-design them accordingly.
ROOT CAUSES
6. ciltinternational.org6 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• The GLOBALIZATION MAP will change over the next decade
• Supply chains becoming less dependent on China and new or existing far/near shore
alternatives will expand
• A divergence will exist between Canada and the USA in terms of the percentage change
in Chinese trade AND in terms of the new far and near shore markets entering the supply
chain
• Push to bring production home from overseas countries like China
GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN IMPLICATIONS
7. ciltinternational.org7 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• PPE equipment such as masks and ventilators now being produced in Canada and the
USA instead of importing
• It is likely that more trade will take place in North America under the USMCA so goods
will be moving more North-South than the current East-West flow
• Federal governments, state and provincial will push for more local manufacturing to avoid
the problem caused by lack of PPE and medical equipment at the onset of COVID-19
NEW FOCUS ON NEAR SHORE SOURCING
8. ciltinternational.org8 Covid-19 Best Practice Response
• Air cargo enjoying spectacular increase in pharma/medical supplies movements due to
urgent nature during pandemic while air passenger traffic is down 98% as many flights
cancelled and air travel between Canada and the world is basically for urgent air cargo
on freighters
• Cross-border rail traffic down over 35% due to closures of auto, steel and other
production facilities during the pandemic
• Ocean carriers have cancelled sailings to and from North America as cargo down
significantly…container traffic down 35%
• The pandemic has triggered much innovation across the supply chain
IMPACT ON MODES OF TRANSPORT
