Alan Krassowski, VP of Technology & Blockchain at Kiva, will explain how the Kiva Protocol team is leveraging Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and related technologies to develop identity and credit solutions for traditionally underserved populations, starting with an implementation in concert with Sierra Leone’s government and banking systems, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Alan will provide an overview of the project and its goals, including some of the challenges related to infrastructure, such as limited electricity, Internet bandwidth and penetration of smartphone devices — and how Kiva is overcoming those challenges. Alan will also explain how Kiva is leveraging various Hyperledger codebases related to verifiable credentials, decentralized identifiers, and distributed ledgers, as well as how Kiva is contributing back to the open-source community.
The audience will gain a better understanding of a real-world application of SSI technologies that will provide powerful benefits to citizens in the developing world. How is Kiva giving unbanked people digital identity and secure control over their own credit information? How can a systems-level change in identity and credit unlock capital and opportunity for millions of people?
Alan has been a professional software engineer, architect, and leader for over thirty years. After earning his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, he worked as a software developer in a wide variety of domains including fintech, insurance, desktop publishing, point-of-sale, accounting, budgeting, video streaming, and narrative theory. He has also held technical leadership roles at various companies in the cybersecurity space, including Chief Architect at Cylance, Inc., Chief Architect & Senior Director at McAfee / Intel Security, and Architect in the Office of the CTO at Symantec. Prior to his role at Kiva, he was a Decentralization Architect at ConsenSys and CTO of ConsenSys Capital where he worked with Ethereum-based blockchain solutions. He has been a technical editor/reviewer on four software security books and one on Bitcoin, and is excited about how advances in cryptography have led to new solutions for people to communicate, collaborate and trade while minimizing the need to trust in centralized institutions.

He has over 10 years of experience in security engineering, conducting security audits and research to identify vulnerabilities. Some of his past projects include Rosetta Flash, which demonstrated bypassing the same-origin policy, and BitIodine, which extracted intelligence from the Bitcoin blockchain. He has published papers on content security policy and cryptocurrencies.
Data Accessibility and Me: Introducing SIOC, FOAF and the Linked Data Web

The SIOC Project
SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities) is an ontology for representing data from online communities on the Semantic Web. It aims to address interoperability issues by standardizing the representation of social data. The SIOC ontology has been adopted by over 50 applications deployed across 400 sites. It establishes a "food chain" for producing, collecting, and consuming social data in order to enrich the Web infrastructure.

Today, in the age of information and Industry 4.0, billions of data sources, including but not limited to interconnected devices (sensors, monitoring devices) forming Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, continuously generate, collect, process, and exchange data. With the rapid increase in the number of devices and information systems in use, the amount of data is increasing. Moreover, due to the digitization and variety of data being continuously produced and processed with a reference to Big Data, their value, is also growing. As a result, the risk of security breaches and data leaks. The value of data, however, is dependent on several factors, where data quality and data security that can affect the data quality if the data are accessed and corrupted, are the most vital. Data serve as the basis for decision-making, input for models, forecasts, simulations etc., which can be of high strategical and commercial / business value. This has become even more relevant in terms of COVID-19 pandemic, when in addition to affecting the health, lives, and lifestyle of billions of citizens globally, making it even more digitized, it has had a significant impact on business. This is especially the case because of challenges companies have faced in maintaining business continuity in this so-called “new normal”. However, in addition to those cybersecurity threats that are caused by changes directly related to the pandemic and its consequences, many previously known threats have become even more desirable targets for intruders, hackers. Every year millions of personal records become available online. Moreover, the popularity of IoTSE decreased a level of complexity of searching for connected devices on the internet and easy access even for novices due to the widespread popularity of step-by-step guides on how to use IoT search engine to find and gain access if insufficiently protected to webcams, routers, databases and other artifacts. A recent research demonstrated that weak data and database protection in particular is one of the key security threats. Various measures can be taken to address the issue. The aim of the study to which this presentation refers is to examine whether “traditional” vulnerability registries provide a sufficiently comprehensive view of DBMS security, or whether they should be intensively and dynamically inspected by DBMS holders by referring to Internet of Things Search Engines moving towards a sustainable and resilient digitized environment. The paper brings attention to this problem and make the reader think about data security before looking for and introducing more advanced security and protection mechanisms, which, in the absence of the above, may bring no value. - 2. These are a set of links to multiple presentations that I have posted through the years on emerging technology topics including IoT, Cloud, and Big Data. During the pandemic, I also created many presentations on world history for my granddaughters during the pandemic including Early Western, East Asian, Islamic, South Asian and Southeast Asian history.
- 3. All of the recent presentations include many images with embedded links to more information often including videos. The IoT and Big Data presentations were created when I was the Co-Chair of the NIST Big Data Public Working Group. Many of the Cloud and Distributed Computing presentations were developed when I was leading groups at the Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium.
