Global communication

Editor's Notes

  1. I would like to start with what are the standard definitions og global and communication. Global means:
  2. I thought it was a good idea to present Global Communication through Global Communication   We don't have any truth on Global Communication to share with you, so we have asked the people what they think, what they have experienced diring their lives, what their point of view is. It has been a very interesting process, as we have so many participants coming from different cultures and the results are very interesting.   What we are about to do is to present Global Communication through Global Communication.....
  3. thanks to a global melting pot!
  4. The aim of this process was not about "Getting the answers through and by the people", as I had expected, but it has happened to be more about "Finding more questions through the people".        Thanks to your participation, the whole process of Learning Unlearning and Relarning came to life. Alvin Toffler, in his book Future Shock , said that .........
  5. We have walked together a discovery path through many activities that could also be  moderated thanks to some Web 2.0 tools. I have chosen to use Wallwisher, Voxpoop, typewith.me, my blog Sunflower EFL and voxpoop.
  6. We then made sure that all the activities were spread and advertised through many different channels. The channels that we chose to use were:     Facebook - profile & groups (CMC11, EU educators) The Mooc website Google+ Twitter Linked in - group Blog posts @ Sunflower EFL # CMC11
  7. THe first activity was brought on through Wallwisher and the result looked like this. This is what our  wallwisher page looked like once it has been completed
  8. What emerged from this activity was that, accvording to the majority of the participants, the main challenges to global communication are the following:   - the need to find a common language that was identified by the majority as the English language    -Illiteracy - Prejudices of some towards different cultures, traditions & cultural styles
  9. And Some say that:   Language barrier is one of the major concerns and challenges in digital/online conversation, especially with people of different cultures/ethnic background.
  10. and, as most of you must have experienced at some point in your lives, also between people of different gender :)   As Global communications carries with it the challenges of every communication, gender can also be listed among the challenges.
  11. - (CHINESE WHISPERS - State of mind)Lack of attitude to undertanding what is different from us
  12. It is a matter of fact that e-communicatio has lead to an increase of global communication.   Some say that  society has become more global as electronic communication has eliminated distance as a barrier to communication   BUT it is also true that:   -technology, as internet access, a computer and some communication devices are not available to  many on the planet
  13. the second activity was brought on through vox o pop, a web 2.0 tool that allows people to record their messages after a starting question. And my question this time was:     If language barrier and the digital divide seem to be the major challenges to global communication, how do we bridge the gap?   The first result that came out from this activity was a non result, quite interesting to analize. Only one person decided to expose herself to the public by showing her own voice, and that was Carol Yeager.
  14. It is important to find common poits an objectives
  15. Carol suggested to bridge the gap through food! Exchanging recipes of a special dishe from our culture. Recipes we enjoy eating or making!
  16. This is what the second activity looked like when I introduced it. This activity was brought on through my blog Sunflower EFL
  17.   a couple of very interesting thoughts emerged from the brainstorming. According to one participant, and I will read her comment directly from my blog, "we are NOT communicating "globally" in the sense that we are not sharing information to the huge majority of persons on the planet. Worse, we all talk about populations on our planet as though we have a clue what they and their lives are really like, while seldom hearing directly from them. So, often we meet up here in virtual spaces in order to preach to the choir. We click each others' links to petitions, sign, and pat ourselves on the back thinking we are "activists"." I chose to quote this person's contribution because it is the one that perfectly mirrors what people think about  global communication, and this is also what I think.   One second very interesting contribution said that Technology has given us a channel and offered us a listening opportunity, it has helped us connect but not immerse    Another interesting thought is that - and I quote, "Global" does not just mean "everyone who has a computer and is tech savvy." "Global" should really mean "everyone". If we are not reaching everyone, we are indeed imaginary cosmopolitans. As always happens with brainstorming and discussions, this question "are we comm.....?" has lead to another big question,
  18. and that is Can online exchange really bridge the gap? Can using a single common language really help us become quality global communicators?   These big questions reminded me of a quote I had read, and the quote is:
  19. "The quality of your life is the quality of your communication" -by  Anthony Robbins   And this has been food for thoughts in the third activity that was conducted through another Web 2.0 tool, called type with me.
  20. 2 main thoughts have arisen : one participant said she would agree so long as we include self-reflection as a form of "Communication" necessary for quality of life. She refers to - and I read her words -  the honest and probling dialog we need to hold with our inner self or selves, in order to be self-aware, in order to know ourselves well enough that we can communicate well with others. THen we have other points of view. One person points out that there are 4 types of comminication 1 -  there is communication with others    2 - communication with ourselves   3 -  there is also the 'wordless' communication we can have where intuition, flashes of something we can't easily explain come to us as a revelation.    4 - And then there is the silence without communication when one is simply being.  Beyond communication.
  21. And that would need to be explored......or at least ENJOYED.
