Raised intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve if not properly managed. There are normal fluctuations in intraocular pressure of up to 3-5 mmHg throughout the day. Applanation tonometry is a common technique for measuring intraocular pressure and involves indenting the cornea, while non-contact tonometry uses an air puff and does not require direct contact with the eye.
