3. Introduction of Glass
• Glass is one of the most useful materials in our daily life. It has been produced for
thousands of years, dating from as early as 7000 B.C.
• Glass is an inorganic solid material that is usually transparent or translucent as well as
hard , brittle and impervious to the natural elements.
• Today glass is so commonly used that its presence often goes unnoticed. Glass is used in
myriad of products, primarily because it is inexpensive and has many desirable
properties
• Properties of Glasses :
Chemical : Glass is highly resistant to chemical attack, and many chemicals and foods can be
stored for decades without corrosion of the glass.
Strength : Glass is brittle, and will break rather than deform when subjected to severe impacts.
Hardness : Glass is a hard material, with hardness values comparable to steel, and can
withstand significant abrasion over its lifetime
Optical : Glass is transparent or translucent to light (able to pass through it).
Electrical : Glass is a good insulator, and provides high resistance to the passage of electricity.
Thermal : Glasses with low thermal expansion have high thermal shock resistance.

4. The Glass Industrial overview in India
The glass industry in India is divided into two categories : cottage industry and factory
industry.
Under cottage industry, glass bangles are made in small furnaces either from glass
blocks produced in factories or from inferior glass manufactured from the impure
sands of the rivers. Flower pots, decorative glassware, tableware’s, lamps are also
produced under cottage industry.
Cottage industry, spread throughout the country, is mainly concentrated in Firozabad
(Uttar Pradesh) and Belgaluru (Karnataka).
The factory industry is mostly confined to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal,
Bihar, Jharkhand and Punjab. Industries in Uttar Pradesh mainly produce sheet
glasses, hollow and pressed wares (bulbs, chimneys, reflectors and motor
headlights), while Bengal and Maharashtra are famous for glass tubes, test- tubes,
beakers and flat glass.

1. Asahi India Glass (New Delhi) - Asahi India is one of the premium brands for glass in India. It is
one of the topmost brands across the world. It was established in 1984 by BM Labroo.
2. Borosil Glass Works Limited (Mumbai) - Borosil is another of the most quality producers of
glass in the nation. The company was found by PK Kheruka in 1962.
3. La Opala RG Limited (Kolkata) - La Opala was established in 1986 in Kolkata by Mr. Sushil
Jhunjhunwala.
4. Glass Wall Systems India Pvt Ltd (Mumbai) - It was founded in 2010 and headquartered in
Mumbai.
5. Hindustan National Glass & Industries Ltd (Kolkata) - The Hindustan National Glass &
Industries Ltd was founded in 1946 in the Hooghly district of West Bengal (First Glass Company).
6. Saint-Gobain Sekurit India Pvt Ltd (Pune) - The Saint Gobain Sekurit was established in India
in 1996 in Pune by M G Ramakrishna.
7. Empire Industries (Mumbai) - Was established in 1963.
8. Binani Industries (Kolkata) - The organization was established in 1972 by Braj Binani. Binani.
9. Gujarat Borosil (Gujarat) - Gujarat Borosil glass manufacturers were established in 1988 by B L
Kheruka.

which owes a share of 77% in Indian automobile glass market. However, the company is also
known for its solar glass variants and architectural glass.
The company has 49 specialist centers spread across

mechanisms to interact with its customers by the ‘AIS
Glass Simulator’ app which can be easily downloaded
in any Smartphone and helps in maintaining the needs
and repairs of their products.
