Im this presentation we are discussing about glass as the material of construction sites how important material it is. Definition of Glass and its types and properties of the Glass.
2. Transparency of Glass:
• Transparency is the
main property of
glass which allows
the vision of outside
world through it.
The transparency of
glass can be from
both sides or from
one side only. In one
side transparency,
glass behaves like
mirror from the
other side.
3. Strength of Glass
Strength of glass
depends on modulus of
rupture value of glass. In
general glass is a brittle
material but by adding
admixtures and laminates
we can make it as more
strong.

4. Durability of Glass
• Glass is strong isotropic homogenous material
that behaves in a perfectly linear elastic
manner until it breaks or buckles. It has good
durability against most chemicals.
Workability of Glass
• A glass can be moulded into any shape or it
can be blown during melting. So, workability
of glass is superior property of glass
6. Soda Lime Glass
Soda lime glass is the most
common form of glass that mainly
contains silicon dioxide.
Soda lime glass contains mainly
silica and lime and no contain
other compounds. It has low
thermal resistance comparatively.
According to its application It has
two types
1. Container Glass
2. Flat Glass
7. Potash lime glass:
Potash glass is a hard glass
that is made with potassium
carbonate, calcium
carbonate, and silica. It can
withstand higher
temperatures and is more
resistant to the actions of
acids. It is used in hard glass
laboratory apparatus as well
as in glass utensils.
8. Borosilicate glass
Borosilicate glass is a
form of a glass that
contains silicon dioxide
and boron trioxide.
Borosilicate glass mainly
contains silica and boron
trioxide. It is very low
coefficient of thermal
expansion thus it is
resistant to thermal
shock.
9. Laminated Glass
It is the main type of
glass it consist of two or
more then two sheets of
glass with plastic
sheeting bonded for
resist shattering. This
plastic layer hold the
glass when it breaks to
provide a safe double
layered design

11. . Wired Glass:
It is also type of
glass. Wired Glass is
the wire netting
embedded in glass
during manufacture to
reduce the probability
of its shattering when
cracked by shock or
any kind of
emergence.
12. . Chromatic Glass
It is also main type of
glass. It control’s the
transparent efficiency
of glass and protect
the interior from
daylight. It is
basically used in
ICU’s and Meeting
Rooms etc.
13. . Potash Lead Glass:
It is also known as flint
glass or lead glass. It is
obtain from the fusion of
a mixture of silica, lead
and potash, in which the
content of lead is around
18-40%. Due to presence
of lead oxide, this glass
has more transparent and
shiny look.
14. Bullet proof Glass:
Bulletproof glass or bullet
resistant glass is a strong
and optically transparent
material that is particularly
resistant to penetration by
projectiles, like any other
material, it is not
completely impenetrable. It
is usually made from a
combination of two or
more type of glass, one is
hard and one is soft. The
softer layer makes the glass
more elastic, so that it can
flex instead of shatter.
15. Self Cleaning Glass:
Self cleaning glass is a
specific type of glass
with a surface that keep
itself free of dirt and
grime the field of self
cleaning coatings on
glass clean themselves
through the action of
water.
16. Energy Efficient Glass:
Energy efficient glass may be defined as using
less energy to satisfy our current needs. In other
words it means using energy more efficiently to
be able to keep the same level of comport while
consuming less energy. Energy efficient glass

17. USES OF GLASS:
1. Glass is extensively used in building construction
since long time for glazing doors and windows.
2. It is also used for decoration.
3. It is also used for sound insulation purposes.
4. It is used for cut glass work, electric bulbs (lead
glass).
5. It is used for manufacturing of laboratory
equipments and cooking utensils (Boro-silicate
glass.)
6. It is used for partition walls.
7. It is used for cabinets, show cases, shop fronts.
8. It is also used as fire retarder.
18. Glass is used in the following list of products:
1. Packaging (jars for food, bottles for drinks, flacon for cosmetics and
pharmaceuticals)
Tableware (drinking glasses, plate, cups, bowls)
2. Housing and buildings (windows, facades, conservatory, insulation,
reinforcement structures)
3. Interior design and furniture (mirrors, partitions, balustrades, tables, shelves,
lighting)
4. Appliances and Electronics (oven doors, cook top, TV, computer screens,
smart-phones)
5. Automotive and transport (windscreens, backlights, light weight but
reinforced structural components of cars, aircrafts, ships, etc.)
6. Medical technology, biotechnology, life science engineering, optical glass
Radiation protection from X-Rays (radiology) and gamma-rays (nuclear)
7. Fibre optic cables (phones, TV, computer: to carry information)
8. Renewable energy (solar-energy glass, wind turbines)
