2. What is the colour scheme?
• The colours on Nicole are very bright and
feminine. This clearly shows that magazine is
for women. The background is also very calm
and natural, this makes Nicole stand out
against the background. However it also
creates a relax feel to the magazine. This
appeals to the target audience as it Nicole
grabs the attention of the audience and
presents the magazine as strong and modern
just like her personality.
3. Who or what is represented on the
cover? Is it positive or negative?
• On the front cover is Nicole Scherzinger, known for her
position as a lead singer in Pussycat Dolls as well as her solo
career and TV personality on many things, the most
popular being the XFactor. She is a strong, independent and
beautiful woman, this would appeal to many women as it is
someone well known and can been seen as an idol or
someone to look up to especially for young women or
young adults. She is wearing a nice suitable outfit that is
very tasteful and makes her stand out with star power. This
is also appealing to the target audience as she looks very
natural, pure and like an everyday woman. It creates a
positive image for the magazine as she is very well
respected. Also the way she is smiling at the camera gives a
more positive and friendly feel to the magazine.
4. What shot type is used? Why?
• The shot type for the magazine is long shot. They
have chosen to use this because allows the
audience to see the outfit of Nicole and her facial
features. Furthermore, it also allows the
magazine to have a lot of cover lines and it will
not overlap.
• The magazine is clearly laid out, nothing is over
lapping and especially not on Nicole, this is good
as it makes it really her stand out against the
background and the writing. The title is also big,
bright and bold as well as the colours really work
well together and complement each other.
5. Who are they targeting? how do you
know?
• It targets women 18–49 in socio economic group of B,
C, D. This is because the news values on the magazine
do have quite a lot of gossip and fashion tips but
fashion that is affordable. As quite a unique target
audience as it targets a different range of women
compared to normal. However this may be quite good
as it is different and therefore stands out among other
magazines. It also reaches a subscription audience of
1,411,061 readers in the United States. Its circulation
on news stands is 986,447, making the total average
paid circulation: 2,397,508. Proving to be a very
popular magazine.
6. What does communicate about the
audience?
• The way the magazine is styled through the
colour, pictures and font. Shows us that the
audience they are looking for are quite informal
and young however. Using Nicole on the front of
the magazine shows us that there ideal reader
would be a strong, beautiful women like her.
Although they are appealing to a younger
audience but be quite and informal and relaxed
magazine. It also appeals to an older target
audience through the colours.
7. Why have conventions been used?
• Conventions have been used like a masthead,
cover lines and a skyline because it means the
audience can identify it as a magazine. It is
eye-catching on a shelf and is more likely to
appeal an audience of women.
