This document discusses geographical indications (GIs) and community intellectual property. It provides examples of GIs for textiles, fruits, medicinal plants, beverages, food grains, animal products, and other goods from various countries. It outlines factors that determine GI quality and strength. The legal instruments for GIs protection under TRIPS and Indian law are described. Additional protection for wines/spirits and homonymous indications as well as provisions for prior users are covered. Owners and authorized users of GIs are defined. Negative protection through nullifying provisions and for infringement are explained. Procedures for registration are discussed along with claw back provisions. Priorities for inventorying Indian GIs and goals of protection and international trade are presented
