Shaikh ayaz(1923-1997)
Mubarak ali shaikh, nick name shaikh ayaz was
born at shikarpur in 1923.he is one of the great
sindhi poets of Pakistan in general and sindh in
particular. Shaikh ayaz gave almost ten decades
of his life to sindhi literature and wrote several
books on poetry ,prose,biographies,plays,short
stories in both sindhi and Urdu languages.
Notable work of shaikh ayaz is the translation
of “shah jo risalo” in urdu language. He was the
poet of earth and people.in poetry, he used
many genres including, bait,wai,ghazal etc:
Shaikh ayaz was awarded “sitara-i-
imtiaz” for his literary work and is
regarded as revolutionary and
romantic poet. He also became vice-
chancellor of sindh university.
Ghazal:
ghazal is Arabic word and it is famous form
or genre of poetry. A ghzal may be
understood as a poetic expression of both
pain of loss or separation and the beauty
of love in spite of that pain.
Basically ghazal consists of some stanzas
and each stanza has two lines each last
line of stanza has rhyme.
•Ghazal:
they have died without their death, thousands of
men not me alone.
In this world, o my country, thousands have turned
silly not me alone.
Explanation:
poet says,in these lines, about the country and
people including himself who died untimely for
their country. Poet, speaking to country, says in this
world their were thousands of silly people not me
only.
Stanza 2
all night long eyes did not close and dew fell drop by
drop.
If the morning cups its hand , o person, there will be
thousands , not me alone.
Explanation:
poet says that he has not slept whole night even he
did not close his eye. And all night dew has fallen.
Talking about hunger, poet says ,if you find hungry
people in morn then you will see thousands ,not me
only.
Stanza: 3
“why does the moon fill the world with poison when
it will be the last hour of night
, thousands wonder, not me alone”.
Explanation;
in these lines poet asks from moon that why night
passed? And he compares moonlight with the poison
and moonlight brings love for his beloved. Poet says
the last moment of night is not near so thousands
people wonder not me alone.
4 Stanza
:”if you say so, I will neither tremble nor cry but let
me ask you: how many will you silence
proclamations are thousands, not me alone”
Explanation:
terrifying the enemy, shaik ayaz says the opposed
person that I will not cry and ask if you refuse me
but one thing I ash: how many expressions or voice
you will make silent because there is no single voice
but thousands proclamations not mine only.
5 stanza:
“this period too ,ayaz, will pass and our luck will turn
this free will rage all the more,
possibilities are thousands, not me alone”
Explanation:
in these lines poet shaikh ayaz says that this period
will pass and our turn will have in future, people will
miss us and people will know about sincerities and
hardworking , about the change , there are a lot of
possibilities not one.
