4. Introduction
Mathew Arnold was an English poet and cultural critic who
worked as an Inspectore of School . He wrote extensively on Social
and Cultural issues, religious and Education. He has proposed new
method to evaluate poetry. He invents Touchstone Method and
says :
“It is the real estimate to evaluate the poetry”.
5. Biography
Born on December 24 1822 In Middlesex, England..He died on April 15th
1888 in Liverpool ,England.
Parents –Thomas Arnold, Marry penrose.
He has been characterised as a Sage writer.
In 1847 he became private Secetary to Lord Landsdown.
He graduated Oxford .
He married Frances Lucy and had six children.
In 1857 ,he was elected as “Foreign Academy of Arts and Science”.

8. Social criticism
He is called as critics of critics. Due to his meticulous observation of
contemporary Society .He wanted to help their countrymen by
enlightening their radical ways of thinking intellectual orbitrainess and
limitations in everything.
Cultural Anarchy is famous for its populariztion Of the phrase :
“Sweetness and light”
9. Journalistic Criticism
In 18187 Arnold was credited with coming phase “New Journalism”
A term to define an entire genre of “News Paper History”.He had enjoy ed a
long and mutually beneficial Journalism of “Paul Mall Gazatte”
Since 1865.
He declare that under Stead, the PMG Whatever may be its
merits,its fast ceasing to be literature.
10. Religious criticism
He saught to find for religion a basis of “Scientific Fact “ that positive
Modern Spirit must accept.

He disciplined himself in constant devotion and self forgetfulness.
He defined Religion as
“Morality touched with emotion”.
11. Criticism of life
Arnold asserts that Literature and especially poetry is “Criticism. of life
“
In poetry this criticism must confirm to be the laws of “Poetic truth and
Poetic beauty”.
Truth apnd Seriousness of matter, felicity and perfection of direction and
manner, as are exhibited in the best poets are what constitutes a criticism
of life.
12. Touchstone Method
Arnold speaks on Judicial criticism “How to Judge the merits of a
work of art”
For Arnold the real test of excellence is the taste of people and the
feeling of greatness in the work of art.
He Suggests the “Touchstone Method” to remember great lines of
writers and to apply them as touchstones for excellence in other
works.
14. The Function of criticism at The
Present Time(1865).
The Function of Criticism at the Present Time. Arnold believes ,
the ultimate function of human kind lies in exercising its creative
powers. He delineates the function of criticism in this work saying
that It filters the contents that will rich Society, “That a critic can
Judge the geatness of literary piece has been asserted”.
17. Conclusion
Conclusion -
Arnold certainly has limitations yet inspite of them, he is a
great critic. His contribution to English Criticism is manifold.He
wrote a century back but his criticism is still alive.
In the words of Herbert Paul-----
“Arnold‘s literary Criticism has original and intrinsic value”.
His work has remained popular and loved since his death.
