Causal Comparative Research At least two different groups are compared on a dependent variable or measure of performance (called the “effect”) because the independent variable (called the “cause”) has already occurred or cannot be manipulated. Dependent variable-the change or difference occurring as a result of the independent variable. Independent variable- an activity of characteristic believed to make a difference with respect to some behavior.

Scientific research deals with verifiable methods of collecting and analysing information regarding two or more variables (phenomena) with the primary aim of determining how they relate. In the Social Sciences, there are several ways of gathering these information. Depending on the problem under investigation and research design, data could be collected through various sources: primary and secondary using varied approaches and methods.
This study attempts an in-depth explication of the various known techniques and methods of data collection especially at its primary source (in keeping with the tenets of survey and descriptive researches). In specific terms, the study discussed in extenso the use of observation, interview and in practical terms questionnaires as instruments for data collection

Composing the perfect research symphony – What are the key elements to conduc...innogy Innovation GmbH
It was only a couple of years ago that online qualitative studies were still approached skeptically by researchers. Today many case studies and publications illustrate that online qualitative research has become a valid methodology amongst many practitioners.
• Do we actually use the full potential that online qualitative research offers?
• How can we actually determine the quality of online qualitative research?
• Does the quality just lie in the eye of the observer? What works, what does not?
In this webinar, research and innovation consultant Nicole Reinhold will take you a step further and share with you her strategies to achieve high quality results by doing ‘activity-based’ online research.
As a specialist in research for innovation projects, Nicole creates customized research designs that creatively combine different type of research methodologies into one online study. Feeling like a sort of ‘composer’ of research designs, she will share with us some of her international ‘compositions.’
State and Directions of Learning Analytics Adoption (Second edition)Dragan Gasevic
The analysis of data collected from user interactions with educational and information technology has attracted much attention as a promising approach for advancing our understanding of the learning process. This promise motivated the emergence of the new field learning analytics and mobilized the education sector to embrace the use of data for decision-making. This talk will first introduce the field of learning analytics and touch on lessons learned from some well-known case studies. The talk will then identify critical challenges that require immediate attention in order for learning analytics to make a sustainable impact on learning, teaching, and decision making. The talk will conclude by discussing a set of milestones selected as critical for the maturation of the field of learning analytics. The most important take away from the talk will be that
- systemic approaches to the development and adoption of learning analytics are critical,
- multidisciplinary teams are necessary to unlock a full potential of learning analytics, and
- capacity development at institutional levels through the inclusion of diverse stakeholders is essential for full learning analytics adoption.
This is the second edition of the talk that previously gave under the same title on several occasions. The second edition reflects many developments happened in the field of learning analytics, especially those in the following two projects - http://he-analytics.com and http://sheilaproject.eu.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

qualitative data analysis software: Toward an understanding
of transparency in motion.
1. Brief discussion of NVivo, even when it was identified as an
important part of the process
2. Role of visualizations in the process, rather than as a product (in
contrast with quantitative research)
17. Woods, M., Paulus, T., Atkins, D.P., & Macklin, R. (2015). Advancing
qualitative research using Qualitative Data Analysis Software
(QDAS)? Reviewing potential versus practice in published studies
using ATLAS.ti and NVivo, 1994-2013. Social Science Computer
Review. 1-21
Data
◦ NUDIST, NVivo, Atlas.ti
◦ Peer review journals, English
◦ 1994-2013
◦ 763 empirical studies
Findings
◦ For both software, most articles were “generic qualitative” “interview” or
“focus group”
225/414 for NVivo
◦ Only 10.4 % used visualizations
18. What do the individual members think
about your use of NVivo?
◦ Benefits:
Tools and activities
Audit trail
Revisit data and interpretations
Multiple data types
Mixed methods
Visualizations
Memos linked to data
Queries that cross-reference
(e.g., intersections)
Comparing sub-groups
Adjectives and descriptors
Transparency
Confirmability
Credibility
Durability
Reliability
Transferability
19. What do the individual members think
about your use of NVivo?
◦ Concerns:
Tools and activities
Text mining
Content analysis
Reference counts
Case counts
Few statistics
Coding by hand is important
Adjectives and descriptors
Homogenization
Distancing
Quantification
Unreflective
Get in the way
Mechanistic

table:
Adjectives Tools/Activities

21. Identify the software and cite it properly
Reasons for selection over others
◦ Ease of use?
◦ Access?
Comparison with others
◦ Advantages?
◦ Similarities?
Cite books that reference the relevance/purpose
of QDAS
Anticipate the potential criticisms
◦ Committee
◦ Literature
22. Track your journey
◦ Likes, dislikes
◦ Things the software may have obscured
◦ Things you may not have seen the same way without it
◦ A memo called: Next steps
Specific features used and how you used them
◦ A few, well-placed screen captures along with narrative
Relevant sections
◦ Methods
Be specific about purpose (storage, coding, analysis, transcription)
Show how NVivo supports or relates to your method
Avoid “method neutral” language
Ethics - storage/management, encryption, identity protection (see your IRB)
◦ Findings
Coding structures
Pattern displays (tables, charts, graphs, maps)
◦ Implications
