GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTION
CONSTRUCTING A TEARDROP SHAPE
• In this geometric construction you’ll be constructing several circles, isolating
several circular arcs, and creating a teardrop shape. The result will be a
smooth curve, where the circular arcs intersect at tangents.
• What you’ll need:
• Compass
• Graph paper
• Optional: Colored pencils
Step 1
Start with a sheet of graph paper.
Step 2
Use a compass to construct this circle of radius 5, as shown.
Step 3
Construct another circle of radius 5, as shown.
Step 4
Construct a circle of radius 3, as shown.
Step 5
Highlight the circular arcs that form the teardrop shape.
Step 6
Isolate the tear drop shape by erasing the other circles.
