Task 6
By Grace Kennedy
Sci-fi/ super hero
films
Positive Representation:
You see 5 characters who are
originally on their own come
together to fight the evil
characters.
I think it shows different types of
people or beings can work
together. In the movie we have a
human, an alien, a tree, a
raccoon and a male alien. After
meeting they all work together
despite them all originally being
strangers.
At the end of the film the
positive characters fight evil.
Negative representation:
There are negative
representation of the bad
characters, who the guardian of
the galaxy are trying to fight. The
characters wear dark clothing or
are seen in darkness.
The negative characters are
defected in the end.
Social groupsThe main (good) characters:
(left to right)
There is drax. A man is lost his family
because of ronan. He meets the
guardians along the way and decides
to join to defeat Ronan. The man
who plays him is 48.
Gamora. An alien assassin trained by
evil thanos. The women who play her
is 38.
Peter quill is half human and half
alien. Id say he looks about 30 years
old. Chris who plays him is 37.
Rocket. He is a racoon. Part of the
guardians.
Groot. He is a tree. He is partners
with rocket. Part of the guardians.
It is a mixed group of beings and
ages.
The bad characters:
Korath is an ally of ronan. He is fear
as an intergaltic hunter. The man
who play korath is 53.
Ronan makes a deal with thanos that
if he retrieves the artifact he will
destroy ronan mortal enemies , the
xandarians. He comes in contact with
guardians and tries to destroy them.
The man who plays ronan is 38.
Nebula is adopted daughter of
thanos and was raised with gamora.
She is loyal to thanos and Ronan. She
is the female villain of film. She is
played by a women of 29.
Thanos-
Adopted dad of gamora and nebula.
Part of bad side. His character is
computer generated with motion
capture, with help of josh brolin, 49.
They are mostly male characters and
a range of ages.
representation
Female representation:
There are two main female characters in guardians of the galaxy: Gamora and Nebula. They
are similar in some ways but also a lot different.
Both Gamora and Nebula can be seen as strong as they both can fight. However, the
different between them is that Gamora is much more independent and on her own at the
beginning ,whereas nebula fights with ronan for thanos, I think she wants his approval.
I think gamora is a positive representation of women because she can look after and stand
up for himself. Towards the end of the movie she becomes more softer as she develops a
connection with peter and works as a team with the guardians to defeat ronan.
I think nebula is a negative representation of women, despite being a fighter. She is part of
evil characters so she brings violence and drama. I think she is jealous of gamora as they
were brought up together. Women are stereotyped as being jealous and bitchy ,especially
when it comes to love so nebula adds to that negatives stereotype.
I feel females are a bit under represented because there’s only 2 , which is a big difference
compared to the amount males in the movie. However, I think it is good that there is female
which represents females in a bad way and another female which females in a good way,
giving some balance.
Gender representation
Male representation:
There are a lot of male characters featured in the guardians. There’s peter, drax,
korath, ronan, vondu and thanos; also groot and rocket are played by
males. There are male character on the good side and bad side. All males are
strong characters in their own way.
Positive representations of males
Star lord/peter: I think peter is a positive representation of a male. At the start
of movie the representation wasn’t great at the start of the movie as he didn’t
take things seriously, acted like an idiot and was a bit selfish. As the movie goes
on we see that he is funny and he works together with the other guardians to
defeat ronan. He is a very likeable character so he represents male in a good
light
Drax: he seemed like a very angry character when he was first introduced into
the movie but as the movie goes on we realize that he has a good heart. Overall
he is a positive presentation of males because he has works together with the
others to defeat the others and is caring.
ronan:
He is on the bad side. He is selfish and mean because he wants to kill the
xanderians. He is a bad representation of males because doesn’t care about
others and brings violence.
Gender representation
Male representation:
There are a lot of male characters featured in the guardians. There’s peter, drax,
korath, ronan, vondu and thanos; also groot and rocket are played by
males. There are male character on the good side and bad side. All males are
strong characters in their own way.
Negative prepresentation:
Ronan:
He is on the bad side. He is selfish and mean because he wants to kill the
xanderians. He is a bad representation of males because doesn’t care about
others and brings violence. I believe is a bad representation of a male because
he is a nasty person.
Korath:
He is also part of the bad side. He is ordered by ronan to kill peter and receive
the orb. He comes to fight the others, he isn’t as bad as ronon but brings
violence. He portrays men in a negative light because he is always fighting and
causing violence.
Thanos:
Thanos is the leader it seems of the bad side. He has a lot of power as he said he
would let ronan destroy the zanderians if he brought him the orb. He isn’t very
active in the film, however he orders some of the other characters around.
Gamora, nebula and ronan turn on him in the film. He portrays males in bad
light because he is part of the bad side and wants to create violence.
Age representation
The bad characters:
Young adults representation
Nebula seems like the youngest main
character as the women who plays her
is 29 year olds.
She is a jealous character and like to
fight and cause trouble. I think she
represents young-adults in a negative
way because she doesn't act in a very
nice way.
No kids or teenagers are represented in
film. I think this is because there has
been a lot of destruction in the film. For
example, Ronan killed drax’s family.
There is an absence of new life in the
film, until the end when baby groot is
created.
The adults in the film are gamora, peter
and ronan; they are played by people in
their late 30’s. I think they characters of
this age are the main cast and play a
strong and dominant characters. I think
it shows that this age group are
independent and make their own
choices. For example, gamora turns
against her adopted father.
Then there is the older generation.
The older generation are drax, korath,
thanos and yondu-they are all play by
people in their late 40’s and early 50’s.
I think the older generation are
represented in different ways. Korath
is a strong character however he is
ordered about by ronan. Drax is also a
strong character ,he lost his family
because of ronan so he almost like the
dad of the group. There is yondu,
which brought up star lord, he is a the
leader of his own group. Finally, there
is Thanos he is a higher power but
Ronan and nebula turn against him. So
I think this age group representation is
a mixed of a positive and negative
representation.
There is a mix of genders featured,
however there are more males than
females. The main character is male. I
feel females are under represented in
the movie because there are only two
main females characters, and the rest
are male.
Age-presence and absence.
The ages which are how are adults,
they are no kids present, I think this is
show the deterioration of the planet
that there is no new life , like drax
family was killed.
Stereo types
‘Good will always over come evil’.
For example, at the end of the
movie the guardians do defeat
ronan, saving the galaxy from being
destroyed.
‘boy gets the girl’. For example,
towards the end of the movie
Gamora and peter develop a
connection.
Under representation/absence and
stereo types
Postive representation:
The main character is iron
man,which is also a
billionaire called tony
stark. Tony stark is
technically living two lives,
one as himself and one as
iron man.
His assistant is portrayed in
a positive light as she cares
and hels iron man.
Negative representation:
Stane is a man which iron man is
fighting against. He wants a suit
built for himself so he can fight
iron man.
Postive male
representation:
Tony Stark/iron man is the
main character. He tries to
defeat evil to save the
public. I think he is a
positive representation of
males because is trying to
stop stane who is evil..
Negative male representation:
Stane is a man which iron man is
fighting against. He wants a suit
built for himself so he can fight
iron man. I think he represents
males in a bad way because he
wants more power ,and tries to
kill iron man. This shows him to
be an evil man.
James is starks friend. He
represents males positively
because he is loyal to iron man.
This shows he is trust worthy.
Yinsen is the creator of the
reactor in the chest of the iron.
He is helpful so he is a a positive
representation of a male.
I think that males are well
represented because they are a
few males in the film. We have a
few males on the good side and
we have a main character on the
bad side. So the overall represent
of males is good.
His assistant is portrayed in
a positive light as she cares
and helps iron man. I think
she represents positively
because she is caring and
helpful towards iron man
in the film.
I think women are under-
represented in the film
because there is only one
main female in the film.
Tony stark.
He is about 40.
Pepper
She is his assistant.
Stane-
He is enemy against iron man.
The target audience will
be preminately male and
be teenagers to adults ,
who are the parents of
the kids.
The gender representation is
mainly male in this film.
There is a supporting female
as she helps the main
character iron man. The
female is a love interest to
the main character.
Positive representation:
The mutant characters
work together within the
film to change the past to
save the future.
Negative
representation:
There is a man
called Trask, who is
planning to test on
mutants so he can
get the DNA to build
machines which
destroy mutants.
Social groups
Logan/wolverine:
He is part of the good side. He is a
mutant who heals fast ,and he has
animal like senses, He offers to go
back into the past to try save the
future. He is played by Hugh
jackman, who is 48 years old.
Main cast: (good side)
Charles/proffessor X:
The future Proffessor X sends wolverine back to the past. He is the
worlds most powerful telepath and leader of the X-Men. He is
played by two people, James McAvoy (38) and Patrick Stewart
(76), as there is a past young professor and an old future professor.
Magneto/Erik:
He can manipulate magnetic fields. He used to be good friends
with Charles but they fell out. The future magneto also agrees to
send wolverine back to the past. He is played by two
people, micheal fassbender (40) and Ian Mckellan (78), as there is a
past and future magneto.
Beast:
He is a mutant with super strength
Ability. He plays a nice character in
the movie. He is palyed by Nicholas
hoult, who is 27.
These four characters stick together in the movie. At the
start Erik and Charles didn't’t get along but they learnt to
be civil for the sake of the future. Wolverine had to explain
to them that he was set from the future to stop mystique
from killing Trask, therefor saving everyone who's back in
the future. Erik does do his own thing towards the end of
the movie as he still doesn't’t believe that the future is in
danger, but they all back together in the end.
Social groups
Mystique:
She is a mutant ,who has shape
shifting ability. She used to be friends
with Charles, and an adopted sister.
She is the reason the wolverine has to
revisit the past, as she is capture and
tested on ,after she kills Trask. She is
played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is
26.
Trask:
He is a milliary scientist. He is seen as
the person of movie, as he wants to
test on the mutants to create machines
to destroy them. He invented the
sentinels, which are destroying the x-
mens future. In the past before it was
change , he was assassinated by
mystique. He is played by Peter
Dinklage, who is 48 years old.
Mystique has been close in the past to both
Charles and Erik but in the movie she does her
own thing. In the end she actually does listen to
the x-men and doesn't’t kill Trask ,therefore
saving the future.
Trask is the man against the X-men/mutants,
as he wants to test on the them. Mystique
wants to assassinate him because of this
reason. Trask is head of Trask industries so he
has a lot of control over other people.
Gender representation
The main male characters is wolverine, charles, Erik, beast and trask.
Wolverine:
I think wolverine is a positive representation of men. Firstly, he offers to
go to past to try save the future, knowing that things could go wrong.
He has almost sacrificed himself to save the future as there is a chance
he may not be able to go back, which shows that he is caring and
selfless. Although, he fights a lot and violent , it is usually as self
defense.
Charles:
I think he is a positive representation of men. He is quite calm but gets
quite argumentative with Erik because they fell out years ago. He
doesn't’t do anything bad in the movie. He also tries to convince
mystique that killing Trask is a bad idea and she listens.
Erik:
I think Erik is a positive and negative presentation of men. He is a
positive representation of men because he is works towards gets trask
and all of his people in the same place. Also, he is negative because he
initially had a fallout with Charles. Furthermore, he is a bit of a loose
cannon sometimes does his own thing, like he almost kills mystique by
shooting her.
Beast:
I think he a positive representation of males. He is
helpful towards charles and other x men. He can fight
but only when it’s necessary.
Trask:
I think he is a negative representation of males. He
wants to test on mutants to know secrets about the
way they are and create machines to destroy them.
This shows him to be a nasty person. Also, he gets
other people to do his dirty work for him.
Overall, the male representation is a mix of
positive and negative. There is more of a
positive representation than negative. There
are a lot of strong male characters in the
movie because each of x-men have an original
power which no-one else has.
Gender representation
Main female:
Mystique:
I feel like Mystique is a mix of a positive and negative
representation of women. In the movie she is pretty
independent but at the same time she is a bit of a
loose cannon to the other x-men/mutants. She
doesn't really listen to the x-men till the end of the
movie. Also, she is the one which caused wolverine to
go back to past by killing Trask and getting herself
captured. However, in the end she listens the x-men
and doesn’t kill Trask ,which saves everyone in the
future. This shows that despites her personal feelings
she can do what is best for the other.
Other females:
Storm, kitty pyrde,blink, rogue.
These characters are all in the present (future).
They are trying to save the mutants race from
the sentinels, which were created by trask in
the past.
These characters are all positive
representations of females. They are strong in
their own way as they can fight and hold their
own special power. Also, they are willing to
risks their lives to save the other mutants from
the sentinels.
Under representation
I feel like there is an under representation
of females characters in the movie. There
are more females characters however they
have not been featured to the extent that
mystique has. I think this is because of the
narrative it is this way; the other
characters can’t travel back to past, and
obviously mystique initially doesn’t survive
the past because of killing Trask. It would
have been nice for more females to be
more involved in the movie but I know
that it’s because of timing in the movie.
Age representation
Older representation:
The older generation is magneto
and Charles in regards to the
present. They are the oldest in
the movie. They are leaders of
the x-men/mutants. They appear
to be respected by the other x-
men/mutants. I think they are
positive representation of the
older generation as they are wise
and good leaders.
Mid generation:
There is wolverine, the past Charles and
erik, trask. Wolverine is a oldest in the past
(in terms of who's he's played by), so I
think he takes on a bit of a leader role. He
has taken on a lot of responsibility with
going back to the past as he has to
convince the others, that there future self
sent him to stop mystique. Charles and
Erik are slightly younger so they are a bit
more immature than wolverine. Charles
and Erik struggle to get on in the film, and
magneto just does his own thing. Trask is a
similar age to wolvine, and he is also a
leader, but of the enemy. He has a lot
power and people listen to him, however
he gets other people to fight his battles.
Younger generation:
In the younger generation
there is Mystique and beast.
Even though they are in the
same age category in real life
they are different in the
movie. Mystique wants to kill
trask, and does her own
thing in the movie. She is
naïve to the other mutants
opinions and thinks what she
is doing is the. right thing,
then she realises they are
right. Young people can be
quite naïve. The beast is a
nice character and helps
wolverine in his mission to
stop mystique so he is
helpful
There is a range of characters featured on the cover; what
looks to be a human (half human half alien),a female alien, a
male alien, a raccoon and a tree. I can tell it is part of a sci-fi
genre genre because some characters are most are non-
humans and are make believe characters. Also, the
background is space and normally sci-fi movies are set in
space or places which are make believe. The characters are
carrying interesting guns which are very different to normal
guns used in real life. There are space-ships featured because
the movie it set in space , further showing the conventions of
a sci-fi film. It isn't as recognizable from the cover as a
superhero film. However, the cover shows them with their
weapons out so it shows they are fighting against something.
Normally, superhero fighting against evil , which is what they
do in the movie against ronan and thanos etc.
There are most of the main characters featured on the
cover; some look like human. This film can be
recognized as part of a sci-fi genre because some
characters are not human; mystique is obviously blue
and wolverine has metal claws. There's also robots in
the top left hand corner and a space ship in the top
right side of the cover; these things are usually part of
sci-fi genre. Sci-fi are usually mysterious but in them
you see things you aren’t used to seeing in real life so
you don’t know what to expect. In the movie, it can
recognized as part of a superhero genre as they fight
the evil characters trask. It is quite bright but not as
bright as the guardians cover.
There are 4/5 characters featured, as
technically tonk stark and iron man are the
same person. It is recognizable as part of sci-fi
genre as a robot is featured ,as well as space
ships. It is clear to see that ’iron man’ is the
main character from the cover as the image of
him is larger than the other characters. By
looking at the cover you can tell it is a
superhero movie as you have a character with a
suit, supero hero’s normally wear a suit.
Genre features and symbolism
I can see a few similarities between the films, from the covers. All of the films are
produced or partly produced my marvel studios so this may be one of the reasons they
are similar.
All have the main characters featured on the front of the DVD. Guardians of the galaxy has peter quill,
Gamora and the rest of the main protagonist characters. X- men has 9/11 (past and future characters) of
the characters on the cover, which are the main cast. Iron man has 4 characters featured on the cover, as
iron man is also tony stark. I think guardians cover stands out from the other super hero covers, for a
couple of reasons. Firstly, the characters featured on the guardians and x men cover are ’good’ characters
whereas on the iron man covers there are the ’bad’ characters featured on the cover. The guardians cover
is also a lot more vibrant than the two other covers; this may be because only positive characters are
featured.
The fonts used style used is pretty similar.it is a metallic style either
gold or sliver. Iron man us is a bit different because it has a gradient
on it, which gives it a fiery/hot metal vibe. I think this genre use this
style for the text because it stands out and create meaning for the
films. I think using metals relates the fact medals or trophies are
metal; gold, bronze and sliver. Super heroes always defeat the
enemy/enemies in the end like the guardians defeat Ronan. They are
held as heroes when they fight evil and save the world/planet/space.
When you have done something good or won something you earn a
medal, so the metal in the title may symbolises doing good. I think
the ‘iron man’ style of text is made to match the iron man suit, which
also made out of metal.
Symbolism/style
Style front cover
The arrangement of cover are very similar
between the three DVDs.
All characters are
focused in the centre
of the page.
On the guardians
cover , all characters
appear to be the same
size or of a similar size.
I think this shows
equality between each
of the characters.
They all play a big part
in the movie and
saving the galaxy.
On the cover of X-men, there is a
group of different characters.
Mystique and Wolvine are the
largest on the page; I think this is
because they are most signifcant
characters in the movie.
Audience
I feel like they will have a simiar audience;
the guardians and x men is a rating of 12 ,
whereas iron man is a pg. I think this is
because there is more violence in the
other movies than iron man. I assume that
the primary audience would be
young/teenage boys and a secondary
audience of females and parents. The kids
may be too young to go to the cinema on
their own so their parents would take
them. I feel like young boys would aspire to
be like the main characters as they always
end up fighting evil. Normally the lead
characters is always male.

Postive male representation: Tony Stark/ironman is the main character. He tries to defeat evil to save the public. I think he is a positive representation of males because is trying to stop stane who is evil.. Negative male representation: Stane is a man which iron man is fighting against. He wants a suit built for himself so he can fight iron man. I think he represents males in a bad way because he wants more power ,and tries to kill iron man. This shows him to be an evil man. James is starks friend. He represents males positively because he is loyal to iron man. This shows he is trust worthy. Yinsen is the creator of the reactor in the chest of the iron. He is helpful so he is a a positive representation of a male. I think that males are well represented because they are a few males in the film. We have a few males on the good side and we have a main character on the bad side. So the overall represent of males is good.

His assistant isportrayed in a positive light as she cares and helps iron man. I think she represents positively because she is caring and helpful towards iron man in the film. I think women are under- represented in the film because there is only one main female in the film.

Tony stark. He isabout 40. Pepper She is his assistant. Stane- He is enemy against iron man. The target audience will be preminately male and be teenagers to adults , who are the parents of the kids. The gender representation is mainly male in this film. There is a supporting female as she helps the main character iron man. The female is a love interest to the main character.

Positive representation: The mutantcharacters work together within the film to change the past to save the future. Negative representation: There is a man called Trask, who is planning to test on mutants so he can get the DNA to build machines which destroy mutants.

Social groups Logan/wolverine: He ispart of the good side. He is a mutant who heals fast ,and he has animal like senses, He offers to go back into the past to try save the future. He is played by Hugh jackman, who is 48 years old. Main cast: (good side) Charles/proffessor X: The future Proffessor X sends wolverine back to the past. He is the worlds most powerful telepath and leader of the X-Men. He is played by two people, James McAvoy (38) and Patrick Stewart (76), as there is a past young professor and an old future professor. Magneto/Erik: He can manipulate magnetic fields. He used to be good friends with Charles but they fell out. The future magneto also agrees to send wolverine back to the past. He is played by two people, micheal fassbender (40) and Ian Mckellan (78), as there is a past and future magneto. Beast: He is a mutant with super strength Ability. He plays a nice character in the movie. He is palyed by Nicholas hoult, who is 27. These four characters stick together in the movie. At the start Erik and Charles didn't’t get along but they learnt to be civil for the sake of the future. Wolverine had to explain to them that he was set from the future to stop mystique from killing Trask, therefor saving everyone who's back in the future. Erik does do his own thing towards the end of the movie as he still doesn't’t believe that the future is in danger, but they all back together in the end.

Social groups Mystique: She isa mutant ,who has shape shifting ability. She used to be friends with Charles, and an adopted sister. She is the reason the wolverine has to revisit the past, as she is capture and tested on ,after she kills Trask. She is played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is 26. Trask: He is a milliary scientist. He is seen as the person of movie, as he wants to test on the mutants to create machines to destroy them. He invented the sentinels, which are destroying the x- mens future. In the past before it was change , he was assassinated by mystique. He is played by Peter Dinklage, who is 48 years old. Mystique has been close in the past to both Charles and Erik but in the movie she does her own thing. In the end she actually does listen to the x-men and doesn't’t kill Trask ,therefore saving the future. Trask is the man against the X-men/mutants, as he wants to test on the them. Mystique wants to assassinate him because of this reason. Trask is head of Trask industries so he has a lot of control over other people.

Gender representation The mainmale characters is wolverine, charles, Erik, beast and trask. Wolverine: I think wolverine is a positive representation of men. Firstly, he offers to go to past to try save the future, knowing that things could go wrong. He has almost sacrificed himself to save the future as there is a chance he may not be able to go back, which shows that he is caring and selfless. Although, he fights a lot and violent , it is usually as self defense. Charles: I think he is a positive representation of men. He is quite calm but gets quite argumentative with Erik because they fell out years ago. He doesn't’t do anything bad in the movie. He also tries to convince mystique that killing Trask is a bad idea and she listens. Erik: I think Erik is a positive and negative presentation of men. He is a positive representation of men because he is works towards gets trask and all of his people in the same place. Also, he is negative because he initially had a fallout with Charles. Furthermore, he is a bit of a loose cannon sometimes does his own thing, like he almost kills mystique by shooting her. Beast: I think he a positive representation of males. He is helpful towards charles and other x men. He can fight but only when it’s necessary. Trask: I think he is a negative representation of males. He wants to test on mutants to know secrets about the way they are and create machines to destroy them. This shows him to be a nasty person. Also, he gets other people to do his dirty work for him. Overall, the male representation is a mix of positive and negative. There is more of a positive representation than negative. There are a lot of strong male characters in the movie because each of x-men have an original power which no-one else has.

Gender representation Main female: Mystique: Ifeel like Mystique is a mix of a positive and negative representation of women. In the movie she is pretty independent but at the same time she is a bit of a loose cannon to the other x-men/mutants. She doesn't really listen to the x-men till the end of the movie. Also, she is the one which caused wolverine to go back to past by killing Trask and getting herself captured. However, in the end she listens the x-men and doesn’t kill Trask ,which saves everyone in the future. This shows that despites her personal feelings she can do what is best for the other. Other females: Storm, kitty pyrde, blink, rogue. These characters are all in the present (future). They are trying to save the mutants race from the sentinels, which were created by trask in the past. These characters are all positive representations of females. They are strong in their own way as they can fight and hold their own special power. Also, they are willing to risks their lives to save the other mutants from the sentinels.

Under representation I feellike there is an under representation of females characters in the movie. There are more females characters however they have not been featured to the extent that mystique has. I think this is because of the narrative it is this way; the other characters can’t travel back to past, and obviously mystique initially doesn’t survive the past because of killing Trask. It would have been nice for more females to be more involved in the movie but I know that it’s because of timing in the movie.

Age representation Older representation: Theolder generation is magneto and Charles in regards to the present. They are the oldest in the movie. They are leaders of the x-men/mutants. They appear to be respected by the other x- men/mutants. I think they are positive representation of the older generation as they are wise and good leaders. Mid generation: There is wolverine, the past Charles and erik, trask. Wolverine is a oldest in the past (in terms of who's he's played by), so I think he takes on a bit of a leader role. He has taken on a lot of responsibility with going back to the past as he has to convince the others, that there future self sent him to stop mystique. Charles and Erik are slightly younger so they are a bit more immature than wolverine. Charles and Erik struggle to get on in the film, and magneto just does his own thing. Trask is a similar age to wolvine, and he is also a leader, but of the enemy. He has a lot power and people listen to him, however he gets other people to fight his battles. Younger generation: In the younger generation there is Mystique and beast. Even though they are in the same age category in real life they are different in the movie. Mystique wants to kill trask, and does her own thing in the movie. She is naïve to the other mutants opinions and thinks what she is doing is the. right thing, then she realises they are right. Young people can be quite naïve. The beast is a nice character and helps wolverine in his mission to stop mystique so he is helpful

There is arange of characters featured on the cover; what looks to be a human (half human half alien),a female alien, a male alien, a raccoon and a tree. I can tell it is part of a sci-fi genre genre because some characters are most are non- humans and are make believe characters. Also, the background is space and normally sci-fi movies are set in space or places which are make believe. The characters are carrying interesting guns which are very different to normal guns used in real life. There are space-ships featured because the movie it set in space , further showing the conventions of a sci-fi film. It isn't as recognizable from the cover as a superhero film. However, the cover shows them with their weapons out so it shows they are fighting against something. Normally, superhero fighting against evil , which is what they do in the movie against ronan and thanos etc. There are most of the main characters featured on the cover; some look like human. This film can be recognized as part of a sci-fi genre because some characters are not human; mystique is obviously blue and wolverine has metal claws. There's also robots in the top left hand corner and a space ship in the top right side of the cover; these things are usually part of sci-fi genre. Sci-fi are usually mysterious but in them you see things you aren’t used to seeing in real life so you don’t know what to expect. In the movie, it can recognized as part of a superhero genre as they fight the evil characters trask. It is quite bright but not as bright as the guardians cover. There are 4/5 characters featured, as technically tonk stark and iron man are the same person. It is recognizable as part of sci-fi genre as a robot is featured ,as well as space ships. It is clear to see that ’iron man’ is the main character from the cover as the image of him is larger than the other characters. By looking at the cover you can tell it is a superhero movie as you have a character with a suit, supero hero’s normally wear a suit. Genre features and symbolism

I can seea few similarities between the films, from the covers. All of the films are produced or partly produced my marvel studios so this may be one of the reasons they are similar.
  • 23.
All have themain characters featured on the front of the DVD. Guardians of the galaxy has peter quill, Gamora and the rest of the main protagonist characters. X- men has 9/11 (past and future characters) of the characters on the cover, which are the main cast. Iron man has 4 characters featured on the cover, as iron man is also tony stark. I think guardians cover stands out from the other super hero covers, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the characters featured on the guardians and x men cover are ’good’ characters whereas on the iron man covers there are the ’bad’ characters featured on the cover. The guardians cover is also a lot more vibrant than the two other covers; this may be because only positive characters are featured.

The fonts usedstyle used is pretty similar.it is a metallic style either gold or sliver. Iron man us is a bit different because it has a gradient on it, which gives it a fiery/hot metal vibe. I think this genre use this style for the text because it stands out and create meaning for the films. I think using metals relates the fact medals or trophies are metal; gold, bronze and sliver. Super heroes always defeat the enemy/enemies in the end like the guardians defeat Ronan. They are held as heroes when they fight evil and save the world/planet/space. When you have done something good or won something you earn a medal, so the metal in the title may symbolises doing good. I think the ‘iron man’ style of text is made to match the iron man suit, which also made out of metal. Symbolism/style

Style front cover Thearrangement of cover are very similar between the three DVDs. All characters are focused in the centre of the page. On the guardians cover , all characters appear to be the same size or of a similar size. I think this shows equality between each of the characters. They all play a big part in the movie and saving the galaxy. On the cover of X-men, there is a group of different characters. Mystique and Wolvine are the largest on the page; I think this is because they are most signifcant characters in the movie.

Audience I feel likethey will have a simiar audience; the guardians and x men is a rating of 12 , whereas iron man is a pg. I think this is because there is more violence in the other movies than iron man. I assume that the primary audience would be young/teenage boys and a secondary audience of females and parents. The kids may be too young to go to the cinema on their own so their parents would take them. I feel like young boys would aspire to be like the main characters as they always end up fighting evil. Normally the lead characters is always male.
