The document discusses plans for a music video for a song. It will tell a narrative story of a singer trying to win over a girl he loves, though she does not love him back. Various techniques will be used like different locations, costumes inspired by similar bands, and black and white imagery to make the video appealing yet different from the original. The target audience is identified as males ages 16-23 based on research into the pop rock genre.

Building an interesting narrative through song lyrics
1.
2. We felt that this song would be a good basis to build a video
for. The lyrics provide a great possibility to make an
interesting narrative for the target audience. The lyrics also
make it easy to make the narrative match the stereotypical,
love story narrative which are so often featured in the Pop
Rock genre. The lyrics can also be directly linked to the
actions in the video which makes it simple for the audience
to follow the narrative. We also feel that the song is a good
choice because there are many different tempo’s within the
song that provides a good opportunity for us to vary the shot
types and editing effects. Also, as the actual music video of
the song isn’t something that we would like to replicate,
there is no concern that our video will be too similar to the
original.
3. With the lyrics providing such a good possibility for a narrative,
we have been able to plan an interesting story alongside a
performance. The lead singer who will be in both the narrative
and the performance plays a pivotal role, as well as the girl he
is trying to win over. Although performing live, he will also be in
the narrative where he is trying to win over and get a date
with the girl he is in love with. The lead singer has always been
in love with the girl in the video but she is unaware of this and
doesn’t see him in the same way. Throughout the video, the
lead singer attempts to win over the girl he loves but as the
video goes on he realises that he can never be with her as
she doesn’t love him back.
4. We researched various brand images from our
genre and found that Franz Ferdinand are an
old fashioned band and use a variety of
techniques in both their music videos and art
work on their album covers. A black and white
theme which is common with the band and
also use special effects to make the music
video recognisable and different in
comparison to Franz Ferdinand’s usual work.
5. We were also inspired by other bands of this genre
as well. These bands include, Imagine Dragons and
The Killers. The Killers also provide an odd, unusual,
old fashioned feel whereas Imagine Dragons
provide an up to date image. We decided to take a
lot on board from Imagine Dragons and The Killers as
we will merge the two dress senses to get a smart
casual look.
6. Locations used in the pop rock genre vary and there
isn't a certain set ideal location. They are often
everyday locations which is why a park and a
bedroom have been selected. The band will also be
performing in a studio which will meet the
conventions of the live performance.
Costumes The costumes used in the video have
been inspired by other pop rock bands. The band
will be wearing a smart casual look which includes a
smart shirt and jeans. The narrative characters will be
wearing casual clothing such as a top or a jumper
and the same applies to the girl.
7. The theme of our video isn’t a stereotypical
love story because the boy is in love with
the girl however there isn’t a happy ending
as the girl doesn’t feel the same way about
the boy and they can never be together.
The narrative follows the boy as he tries to
win over the girl and his eventually
disappointed which can be linked to the
lyrics
8. The target audience will be boys/men of
the age 16-23. The research carried out
such as the questionnaires have identified
that this is the ideal age and gender who
enjoy this genre of music. Therefore, we will
try and use certain techniques and
conventions to meet this genre to appeal
to our target audience.
