associated with a person or a subject. This is
really important in a film as props and costume is
a major aspects in a film as it represents the
character and personality. In a horror film if there

assume there's going to be danger and murders
whereas a comedy you would see everyday day
life props and would portray as reality and

3. SETTING
In films or any other programme the setting is the main
priority as that leads onto the events of the film and
suggests the genre and what it is about. In a horror film
for example ‘Sinister’ the location gives the audience a
little knowledge about the film as sinister main setting was
the little house in a small village and this suggested loads
of ideas about whathow are events going to take place.
The setting usually shows an insight of the film in any
genre if its horror or comedy as it’s the main plots of the
events and a symbolic way of showing the genre. Another
location could be an abandoned asylum and this would
straight away grab peoples attention and make them feel
scared and interested as it uses a very graphical location

4. CHARACTERS
Characters are one of the main roles in films as they are
the people in the film with the different choice of
personality to choose from. They usually indicate that
persons motives and personality. In a horror film if the
characters role is a murderer they would have aspects of
danger and appearance would be hidden and personality.
The character would usually have an unsettling feeling to
it and be unusual. Also could be unpredictable and have a
sense of weirdness around it. Most predictable characters
in this genre is a psychopath or mad masked character on
the run for murder. Also deranged and unsettling

5. THEMES
In most film the first main thing you think of is
what theme its going to be as this shows you how
to go further into the the theme like setting,
characters and style. The theme indicates the
main conception to a film as it shows you ways it
about for example a horror themed film should
have aspects of murders, violence, gory and
mentally deranged characters. For example ‘The
conjuring’ shows it’s a horror themed film as it
uses music, colours and location to show that its

6. NARRATIVE
A narrative is a spoken or written account of
connected events. This is usually shown rather
than being told as its away of communicating
through moving images. In films the narrative is
told by the characters through different settings
by sharing dialogue with each other. Narrative is
another word for story so it’s the part in the film
that commicates with the audience to show what
the story is about. In a horror film the narrative
could be a stalker watching a girl and is waiting to
make the right move to attack her ; this is shown

7. STYLE
Style is really important as it shows a connection to the
genre if its horror or comedy. In style its usually looking at
colours, fonts, background and sound. for example
looking at sinister you can
straight away tell it’s a horror film as the style
uses graphical images and dark colours. The image
is the main thing that stands out as it been written
in blood and gives suggestion of the style of the genre.
The font as well looks creepy because of the shadow
and this interprets a horror feel to it. The style always
leads to what genre it is.
