Charli XCX – Stay Away

Treatment Sheet

Background
Crystal Castles are an indietronicaduo from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The genres mainly associated with Crystal Castles are indietronica,
experimental, dark wave and synth pop. These are uncommon genres
and are mainly in between indie and electronic music. Crystal Castles
released their self-titled debut album on March 18th 2008. Since then
they have released two other albums titled like a sequel i.e. II.

Concept and Ideas
The Crystal Castles song that we have decided to do is Kerosene, from
their album, (III). We chose this song because the music’s mood and
lyrics can make it open to interpretation. The song also has no music
video, making it easier for us to have original ideas for the music video.
To keep the usual conventions of an electronica music video, the
concept and themes for the music video will be contradictory to the
lyrics. The lyrics to Crystal Castles’ Kerosene are about the world’s
imperfections e.g. society, religion etc. Because the music video will be
contradictory, it will allow us to expand our ideas more. We plan to
Charli XCX – Stay Away

include elements of a love story but mainly focusing on the
hallucination narrative.

Performance and Narrative
The message that we want to get across in our music video is focused
on the effects of taking drugs and how it affects peoples’ lives
personally, including family, love etc. The story I want to tell in my
video is about a girl who takes drugs and her journey through the night
as she is in the different stages of drug taking (taking the drugs,
hallucinating and the comedown). Her journey will include being at
parties, wandering the streets at night and a conflict with her love
interest. My main actress will be the main focus of the video, with their
being many shots used in the video, including many close up shots of
her. I plan on doing this so the audience can identify with her during
her journey through the video. I think this will be successful because my
target audience is between the ages of 15-21 and my main actor is in
that age range, making it easier for the target audience to identify with
her well. The video will be set out with the main actor performing the
lip sync. The video will then cut frequently to the narrative set in
different places i.e. the streets and parties. The actor will be in a dark
area to match with the dark lyrics of the song, but there will be
colourful effects made in editing to match with conventions of the
electronica genre.

Music Video
For the music video, I want to highlight the girl’s stages of her drug
hallucination. Most shots of the actress will be close up shots and long
shots to show how lost she is. There will be a series of cross cuts
between the actresses’ performance and the narrative, which also
includes her. I want the music video to look very vintage and look like a
vhs type video. This vintage style was used in TOPS’ music video for
Ring of Saturn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-m2y_wFbiQ.
Along with this vintage look, I want there to be many colourful effects
being done post-production and also while filming. This is done in
several Crystal Castles music videos. There may be certain shots of the
music video that may be edited in reverse or fast/slow motion to match
the actresses’ hallucination and to keep the audience interested.
