Why are anomalies important? Because they tell us a different story from the norm. An anomaly or an event might signify a failing heart rate of a patient, a fraudulent credit card activity, or an early indication of a tsunami. As such, it is extremely important to detect anomalies or anomalous events.
In this talk, we will give an introduction to anomaly detection. Anomalies are rare events. As a result, standard accuracy measures do not apply. But then, how do we evaluate an Anomaly Detection (AD) method? If we want to compare two or more AD methods, what kind of simple tests can we do? What are the data repositories that are available for AD?
We will also discuss an ensemble method for AD. Constructing an AD ensemble is challenging because the class labels are not known. We will look at an unusual ally from psychometrics – Item Response Theory – to help us in this construction.

RuleML 2015: Ontology Reasoning using Rules in an eHealth ContextRuleML
Traditionally, nurse call systems in hospitals are rather simple:
patients have a button next to their bed to call a nurse. Which specific
nurse is called cannot be controlled, as there is no extra information
available. This is different for solutions based on semantic knowledge:
if the state of care givers (busy or free), their current position, and for
example their skills are known, a system can always choose the best
suitable nurse for a call. In this paper we describe such a semantic nurse
call system implemented using the EYE reasoner and Notation3 rules.
The system is able to perform OWL-RL reasoning. Additionally, we use
rules to implement complex decision trees. We compare our solution to
an implementation using OWL-DL, the Pellet reasoner, and SPARQL
queries. We show that our purely rule-based approach gives promising
results. Further improvements will lead to a mature product which will
significantly change the organization of modern hospitals.

Textbooks for Responsible Data Analysis in ExcelNathan Garrett
With 27 million users, Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Seattle, WA) is the most common
business data analysis software. However, audits show that almost all complex spreadsheets
have errors. The author examined textbooks to understand why responsible data analysis is
taught. A purposeful sample of 10 textbooks was coded, and then compared against
spreadsheet development best practices. The results show a wide range of approaches, and
reveal that none of the 10 books fully cover the methodologies needed to create wellrounded
Excel data analysts. There is a need to re-evaluate the teaching approaches being
used in office application courses

MOOC represents an ultimate way to deliver educational content in higher education settings by providing high-quality educational material to the students throughout the world. Considering the differences between traditional learning paradigm and MOOCs, a new research agenda focusing on
predicting and explaining dropout of students and low completion rates in MOOCs has emerged. However, due to different problem specifications and evaluation metrics, performing a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art machine learning architectures is a challenging task. In this paper, we provide an overview of the MOOC student dropout prediction phenomenon where machine learning techniques have been utilized. Furthermore, we highlight some solutions being used to tackle with dropout problem, provide an analysis about the challenges of prediction models, and propose some valuable insights and recommendations that might lead to developing useful and effective machine learning solutions to solve the MOOC dropout problem.

Keynote presentation for the International Semantic Web Conference in Athens Greece, on November 9, 2023. The talk addresses the generative AI explosion and its potential impacts on the Semantic Web and Knowledge Graph communities and, in fact, may spark a research Renaissance.
Abstract:
We are living in an age of rapidly advancing technology. History may view this period as one in which generative artificial intelligence is seen as reshaping the landscape and narrative of many technology-based fields of research and application. Times of disruptions often present both opportunities and challenges. We will discuss some areas that may be ripe for consideration in the field of Semantic Web research and semantically-enabled applications. Semantic Web research has historically focused on representation and reasoning and enabling interoperability of data and vocabularies. At the core are ontologies along with ontology-enabled (or ontology-compatible) knowledge stores such as knowledge graphs. Ontologies are often manually constructed using a process that (1) identifies existing best practice ontologies (and vocabularies) and (2) generates a plan for how to leverage these ontologies by aligning and augmenting them as needed to address requirements. While semi-automated techniques may help, there is typically a significant portion of the work that is often best done by humans with domain and ontology expertise. This is an opportune time to rethink how the field generates, evolves, maintains, and evaluates ontologies. We consider how hybrid approaches, i.e., those that leverage generative AI components along with more traditional knowledge representation and reasoning approaches to create improved processes. The effort to build a robust ontology that meets a use case can be large. Ontologies are not static however and they need to evolve along with knowledge evolution and expanded usage. There is potential for hybrid approaches to help identify gaps in ontologies and/or refine content. Further, ontologies need to be documented with term definitions and their provenance. Opportunities exist to consider semi-automated techniques for some types of documentation, provenance, and decision rationale capture for annotating ontologies. The area of human-AI collaboration for population and verification presents a wide range of areas of research collaboration and impact. Ontologies need to be populated with class and relationship content. Knowledge graphs and other knowledge stores need to be populated with instance data in order to be used for question answering and reasoning. Population of large knowledge graphs can be time consuming. Generative AI holds the promise to create candidate knowledge graphs that are compatible with the ontology schema. The knowledge graph should contain provenance information identifying how the content was populated and its source and correctness and currency should be checked. A human-AI assistant approach is presented.
Social Tags and Linked Data for Ontology Development: A Case Study in the Fin...Andres Garcia-Silva
We describe a domain ontology development approach that extracts domain terms from folksonomies and drive the search for classes and relationships in the Linked Open Data cloud. As a result, we obtain lightweight domain ontologies that combine the emergent knowledge of social tagging systems with formal knowledge from Ontologies. In order to illustrate the feasibility of our approach, we have produced an ontology in the financial domain from tags available in Delicious, using DBpedia, OpenCyc and UMBEL as additional knowledge sources.
