new scrubbers for generators at
a massive data center campus.
THE CHALLENGE
To comply with new emission standards, a
technology giant needed to replace scrubbers
for its emergency backup generators at one
of its data center complexes. The facility had
only N+1 redundancy, so the McKenney’s
team had to finish the installations quickly—
including enclosure lifts and piping replace-
ments to minimize downtime.
THE SOLUTION
The team, including two pipefitting foremen
with extensive rigging and welding experience,
devised an assembly line style plan to pick up
and move each generator enclosure to expedite
new scrubbers, piping and installation work.The
plan involved heavy rigging and coordination
between the foremen and the crane contractor.
THE RESULTS
In order to quickly get the emission output
under EPA levels, the McKenney’s team
worked with the customer to condense the
construction schedule from 11 to seven
months—saving the customer considerable
labor costs. All through the project, the team
was able to keep the backup generators oper-
ational and allow the facility’s maintenance
staff access—giving them the ability to
address day to day issues.
