In 2005, General Motors (GM) – the world's largest automotive manufacturer is now stepping to the point, where strategic thinking, planning and breakthrough are necessary. Three consecutive years of global market share declines, high pressure from world-class competitors, health care and retirement burdens, and rapid changes in consumer profile are the reason of that. How GM should minimize such threats and in the same time capture potential opportunities with its strengths is very interesting issue in term of strategic management and policy.

Colin Chapman and Automotive Mass PropertiesBrian Wiegand
As a small start-up company competing against long established automotive concerns such as Ferrari, Colin Chapman’s Lotus Engineering Company did not have the capability to gain advantage through advanced engine design, or even via the design of most of the other major mechanical systems. Most such components were commercially sourced, and so the only way a decisive advantage could be obtained was through an uncompromising emphasis on gaining performance “edges” from the remaining design elements of structure, body, and suspension. Because the automotive performance aspects of acceleration, braking, and handling are so dependent on various vehicle mass properties the optimization of those mass properties became the “Holy Grail” of Lotus design as directed by Colin Chapman.

COMPARATIVESTUDYBETWENTHERMAL ENGINE PROPULSION AND HYBRID PROPULSIONAJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT:The academic paper describes in a concrete and elegant way a comparative study of two existing
propulsion systems on cars. The authors have developed the concepts and technical aspects of the SWOT
analysis, which highlights the qualities and shortcomings of the classic propulsion system with a thermal engine
compared with a hybrid propulsion system. In this way, interested parties can learn about the advantages of
hybrid propulsion systems installed in today's cars, which are defined by the electric motor/ motors installed in
their propulsion systems. Finally, conclusions are presented in the field covered.

Software Development Lessons Learned from Industrial Failures of the 1980sCharlotte Chang
Talk given at CodeMash2016.
In the mid-late 20th century, industry giants asked themselves; “How do we continuously improve?”, “How do we build a quality product?” and “How do we design for end users?” These are the same challenges that we face as software developers and designers today. Issues with technical innovation, resource constraints, and organizational support, are experienced not only in zeros and ones but on the road and in space. In the early 20th century, the U.S. was considered a global leader in economic and scientific achievement. After those major innovations in transportation, space exploration, and computer science, American industries focused on manufacturing advantages, such as mass production and repeatable use. Progress was now measured by process improvements, adapting to market changes and ability to pivot. Why has the tech industry continued to boom, while other industries struggle? Using examples from General Motors and NASA, this talk examines their failures in reliability, collaboration, and product design. Take a step back in history to relive the experiences of these pioneers, learn from their past failures, and how they apply to crafting software products today.

drive without first turning a heavy crank. The
self-starter is still widely considered the most
significant automotive innovation of the 20th
century.

To appease motorists with a lead foot, Cadillac raised
the bar for performance with the industry’s first V-
type, water-cooled, eight-cylinder engine.The 314-
cubic-inch engine produced 70 horsepower at 2,400
rpm and was the industry’s first major step toward
high-speed, high-compression engines. The V-8 was
standard on all 1915 Cadillac models.

Independent Wheel Suspension
GM Engineering developed the first
independent wheel suspension
system, lessening the impact when
any of a car’s four wheels hit a bump
or hole and making the car safer as
well as more comfortable. Popularly
known as“knee-action” suspension
because of the way each wheel was
connected to the axle, it was
introduced in all 1934 model year GM
cars in the North American market.

proving ground in the U.S.The tests
quickly became standard across the
industry and were adopted by
government safety agencies.
