This event even though<br />only lasted for 1 year, made people <br />second think about their huge gas <br />guzzling cars, fuel economy, and <br />helped open the market to smaller, <br />more efficient Japanese made <br />vehicles.<br />

It was not popular until <br />the release of the Toyota Prius in 1997 <br />with more than 2 million sold as of 2009. <br />The Prius uses a combined engine with <br />an electrical system to help deliver <br />54mpg and reduced emissions. <br />
