Introduction
• General Motors Company (also known as GMC) is a
United States based and world’s seventh(previously
four) largest automaker with headquarters in Detroit,
Michigan
• Its responsible for the most striking and legendary
automotive designs ever created in steel and glass
• Examples- GTO, Camaro, Corvette, Cutlass, Riviera, EI
Camino, Eldorado
• Produces cars as well as trucks in thirty four countries,
and sell these vehicle by different name of the brands
• Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Buick, Holden, GM Daewoo,
Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling are the brand names

15th, 2014.
She is first female CEO of General Motors.

• Halol plant is known as the mother plant of General Motors in
India
• Started in Mid 90’s in India (Gujarat-Halol) signing a 50-50 joint
venture with Hindustan Motors (HM) to sell Opel Astra cars in
India.
• In 1999 GM bought the Halol, Gujarat Plant from Hindustan
• Spread across 172 acres
• Production capacity 1,10,000 units per annum
• 1200 employees

• Labour issues (poor working condition and pay)
• Labour unrest (2010-2014)
• Poor performance
• Less manufacturing capacities in comparison to the other
plant
• Want to focus on one plant to make business
CURRENT SCENARIO AT HALOL PLANT
Impacts of shutting halol plant
• Relocation (labour or company)
• Loss of Time
• Will affect manufacturing and sales
• Jobless Labour (Specially Contractual)
• Local Labours (Gujarat- 80% and rest all from
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh)
• Salary for Locals(if shifting)
• Annual production will come down to 2,20,000
from 2,82,000 (combined capacity of Halol and
Talegaon plant currently)
WHY SHIFTING TO TALEGAON
(MAHARASHTRA)
• Long term Sustainable Profitability
• Suitable for production of vehicles based on its Global
Emerging Market (GEM) platform
• Large manufacturing units as compared to Halol Plant
(1,65,000 units per annum whereas Halol plant’s
manufacturing unit is 1,27,000)
• Double manufacturing unit
• Its proximity (nearness) with Mumbai which is port will help
in exports and international sourcing
STEPS TAKEN
• Compensation for the employees much more than legal
provisions like one month salary for every year in service
• 12,000 job openings
• Most of the workers will be transferred from Halol plant to
Talegaon plant
• Some workers will be given offer to join back and others
have to laid off post June 2016
• No decision for Contractual workers yet
• Workers have been given a year’s time to prove their
worth by working without any additional allowances and
perks
• Not giving up suppliers from halol
• Will close the Halol plant in June 2016
• Will design keeping Indian consumers in mind for the first
time
