INTRODUCTION
For this semester long project, the team will consist of five members each with a specific
position.

As project manager, Nathaniel B. will be organizing when and where the team will be meeting to
work on this project. He will also keep track of the group’s finances and keep the group
motivated.
Both Joseph and Nathaniel P. are the groups technical experts. They will be responsible for
organizing and managing the technical aspects of this project.
Jenna and Maximo will be contributing to the group as technical writers. The technical writers
will be in charge of the overall format as well as the completeness and conciseness of the
report.
Maximo will also be the point of contact for the group. He will be responsible for communicating
with the instructor and teaching assistants with any questions or concerns that the group may
have.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
The theme that the group chose is modular pieces that add certain elements as you make your
way up the hierarchy of the pieces. For this theme, the pawn is the base for all of the other
pieces and each has their own distinct characteristic that adds to the base. The pawn is a very
basic cubic design that is hollowed out and has an LED light in it. The rook is built on the top of
the pawn which looks like a castle. After that, we have the knight that is represented by shields
on the four corners of the castle. The bishop has a Mitre or special hat bishops wear. There are
still discussions going on about the last two pieces of the queen and king within the group.

WORK PROPOSAL
The current plan to design the chess set is as follows:
1. Group discussions about each piece to brainstorm design ideas.
2. Record and organize all ideas and then remove any undereisables.
3. Reach a consensus on ideas to move into the sketch phase.
4. All desirable ideas will be sketched on paper and sent to Technical Experts to be
designed in CREO/SOLIDWORKS.
5. Designs created in CREO/SOLIDWORKS are then discussed and redesigned after input
from the group.
6. Step 5 will repeat until designs are fully developed/accepted by each group member.
MANAGEMENT PROPOSAL
The team shall closely adhere the following guidelines to ensure that all project requirements
are satisfied:
● All constant communication will be sent through the groupme messaging smartphone
application.
● All files related to the project will be kept in a google drive folder where the link is
accessible on the team page on the UBLearns website.

● At least one project meeting will be held per gate project assignment. Additional project
meetings will be scheduled as needed throughout the semester.
● All gate requirements shall be satisfied with a recommended two day buffer from due
date and no later than a one day buffer to complete final revisions before submission.
● All questions about the project will be brought to the attention of the Point of Contact in
which they will utilize either email or Piazza message board system to ask the instructor.
All team members should utilize the flowchart on the following page to efficiently deal with any
conflict within the group:

Lastly, any conflict between the Project Manager and the team should be resolved immediately
to prevent any further issues from arising. This includes a mandatory meeting with the involved
members to reach a compromise. If no compromise cannot be reached, the instructor will be
contacted for further instruction.
All conflicts will be documented according to what the issue was, between who the conflict was
with, what steps were taken, and if any compromises were made during those interactions. This
is to ensure that the process is efficiently done so that would not affect the progress of the
project.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
CHESS SET BACKGROUND AND DESIGNS
Chess is a game that consists of 6 pieces, chess has existed for 1500 years. Chess’s rules
have changed over time until they’ve become standard in the 1880’s. Each piece has a different
move set. Pawns are the most plentiful piece with 8 pawns on the board, but only able to move
forward unless attacking. All the other pieces have 2 pieces each except for the queen and king
pieces which only have one. Traditional sets usually have similar art styles across sets, which
makes it easy to differentiate pieces across different chess sets. Even boards that don’t
necessarily match with traditional style boards have pieces that are easy to differentiate. Pieces
in the back row increase in height moving towards the center. An example of this is in the figure
below of pieces used in tournaments.

ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF ADDITIVE PROCESSES
There are several advantages and disadvantages to using additive processes in order to
manufacture certain parts or products. The results of these advantages and disadvantages are
depicted in the table below:

● Changes can easily be made to the
CAD file to fix potential defects
● Can immediately prototype part
instead of outsourcing to a vendor
● Ability to produce complex parts
● Can only produce one part at a time
● Must allow for large tolerances
● Poor surface finish

From the table, there are more advantages than disadvantages. Although, traditional
manufacturing processes are widely used due to the fact these processes can produce parts
with lower tolerances. In many cases, this is desirable in order to get the right interface or fit.
ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING
PROCESSES
There are several advantages and disadvantages to using traditional manufacturing processes
in order to manufacture certain parts or products. The results of these advantages and
disadvantages are depicted in the table below:

  • 3. 2 INTRODUCTION For this semester long project, the team will consist of five members each with a specific position. TABLE 1: ​Summary of Team Members and Project Roles Name Position Nathaniel Borst Project Manager Jenna Le Technical Writer Joseph Mueller Technical Expert Nathaniel Polichette Technical Expert Maximo Vazquez Technical Writer/ Point of Contact As project manager, Nathaniel B. will be organizing when and where the team will be meeting to work on this project. He will also keep track of the group’s finances and keep the group motivated. Both Joseph and Nathaniel P. are the groups technical experts. They will be responsible for organizing and managing the technical aspects of this project. Jenna and Maximo will be contributing to the group as technical writers. The technical writers will be in charge of the overall format as well as the completeness and conciseness of the report. Maximo will also be the point of contact for the group. He will be responsible for communicating with the instructor and teaching assistants with any questions or concerns that the group may have.
  • 4. 3 PROJECT PROPOSAL INITIAL ASSESSMENT The theme that the group chose is modular pieces that add certain elements as you make your way up the hierarchy of the pieces. For this theme, the pawn is the base for all of the other pieces and each has their own distinct characteristic that adds to the base. The pawn is a very basic cubic design that is hollowed out and has an LED light in it. The rook is built on the top of the pawn which looks like a castle. After that, we have the knight that is represented by shields on the four corners of the castle. The bishop has a Mitre or special hat bishops wear. There are still discussions going on about the last two pieces of the queen and king within the group. FIGURE 1:​ Sample design of concept chess pieces in Solidworks. The king and queen design will be based off the knight chess piece similar to the bishop. WORK PROPOSAL The current plan to design the chess set is as follows: 1. Group discussions about each piece to brainstorm design ideas. 2. Record and organize all ideas and then remove any undereisables. 3. Reach a consensus on ideas to move into the sketch phase. 4. All desirable ideas will be sketched on paper and sent to Technical Experts to be designed in CREO/SOLIDWORKS. 5. Designs created in CREO/SOLIDWORKS are then discussed and redesigned after input from the group. 6. Step 5 will repeat until designs are fully developed/accepted by each group member. MANAGEMENT PROPOSAL The team shall closely adhere the following guidelines to ensure that all project requirements are satisfied: ● All constant communication will be sent through the groupme messaging smartphone application. ● All files related to the project will be kept in a google drive folder where the link is accessible on the team page on the UBLearns website.
  • 5. 4 ● At least one project meeting will be held per gate project assignment. Additional project meetings will be scheduled as needed throughout the semester. ● All gate requirements shall be satisfied with a recommended two day buffer from due date and no later than a one day buffer to complete final revisions before submission. ● All questions about the project will be brought to the attention of the Point of Contact in which they will utilize either email or Piazza message board system to ask the instructor. All team members should utilize the flowchart on the following page to efficiently deal with any conflict within the group: FIGURE 2:​ Flowchart Map for Conflict Resolution Lastly, any conflict between the Project Manager and the team should be resolved immediately to prevent any further issues from arising. This includes a mandatory meeting with the involved members to reach a compromise. If no compromise cannot be reached, the instructor will be contacted for further instruction. All conflicts will be documented according to what the issue was, between who the conflict was with, what steps were taken, and if any compromises were made during those interactions. This is to ensure that the process is efficiently done so that would not affect the progress of the project.
  • 6. 5 BACKGROUND INFORMATION CHESS SET BACKGROUND AND DESIGNS Chess is a game that consists of 6 pieces, chess has existed for 1500 years. Chess’s rules have changed over time until they’ve become standard in the 1880’s. Each piece has a different move set. Pawns are the most plentiful piece with 8 pawns on the board, but only able to move forward unless attacking. All the other pieces have 2 pieces each except for the queen and king pieces which only have one. Traditional sets usually have similar art styles across sets, which makes it easy to differentiate pieces across different chess sets. Even boards that don’t necessarily match with traditional style boards have pieces that are easy to differentiate. Pieces in the back row increase in height moving towards the center. An example of this is in the figure below of pieces used in tournaments. ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF ADDITIVE PROCESSES There are several advantages and disadvantages to using additive processes in order to manufacture certain parts or products. The results of these advantages and disadvantages are depicted in the table below: TABLE 2: ​Summary of Advantages and Disadvantages of Additive Processes Advantages Disadvantages ● Less waste material ● Assembly is rarely required ● Changes can easily be made to the CAD file to fix potential defects ● Can immediately prototype part instead of outsourcing to a vendor ● Ability to produce complex parts ● Can only produce one part at a time ● Must allow for large tolerances ● Poor surface finish Source: Gaget, 2019 and N., 2017
  • 7. 6 From the table, there are more advantages than disadvantages. Although, traditional manufacturing processes are widely used due to the fact these processes can produce parts with lower tolerances. In many cases, this is desirable in order to get the right interface or fit. ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING PROCESSES There are several advantages and disadvantages to using traditional manufacturing processes in order to manufacture certain parts or products. The results of these advantages and disadvantages are depicted in the table below: TABLE 3: ​Summary of Advantages and Disadvantages of Traditional Manufacturing Processes Advantages Disadvantages ● Precise surface finish ● Almostlmost any solid material can be machined ● Geometry that requires fine details can easily be machined ● High dimensional accuracy ● ​Accuracy often falls upon the operator ● Can’t always be consistent ● Standard machining takes time ● Complex shapes are hard to produce ● Frequent design changes can’t be incorporated Source: Mohammed S.
