Gape is a deliberative democracy platform that generates sustainable citizen-led projects. It analyzes user proposals and interests to form networks around common goods. These networks then contribute ideas that Gape aggregates and pre-computes into project proposals using semantic technologies. The platform is accessible through multiple channels and is designed for use on Amazon EC2. An alpha version will be released in late 2016 for testing by companies and citizens.

United operates 339 destinations in 54 countries with 4,523 daily departures and a fleet of 1,304 aircraft. IoT can improve airline operations through sensors that track assets and passengers and provide indoor navigation. Data from sensors is processed in the cloud using event processing, machine learning and predictive analytics. Applications include tracking TSA wait times, managing airplane turns and tasks, and providing wheelchair assistance through mobile apps. Future uses may include context-aware guidance, fleet management, and planning equipment like de-icing resources.
Transport for London: Using data to keep London moving
This talk was presented by Sriskandarajah Suhothayan (WSO2) and Roland Major (Transport for London) at the Strata Data Conference in London, May 23 2017.
Transport for London (TfL) uses a wide range of data for operational purposes, but the underlying data is typically held in multiple disconnected systems. Freedom of Information requests have helped prove the value of sharing this data. TfL is embarking on a journey to make more of this data open and available in real time.
TfL and WSO2 have been working together on broader integration projects. Roland Major and Sriskandarajah Suhothayan share the evolving big data and IoT architectures and services TfL is building to pull together these diverse datasets to better support operational teams and accelerate the identification and classification of disruption to improve response times for incidents. In particular, they explore WSO2’s solution, which emerged from the Data in Motion hackathon organized by TfL, AWS, and Geovation. The solution innovates TfL’s heterogeneous data sources through the combination of the TfL Unified API and its operational data sources, including traffic sensor, air quality, and passenger flow data, to provide better travel time and transit suggestions for Londoners and tourists using the WSO2 Data Analytics Server, WSO2 Complex Event Processor, and WSO2 API Manager, bringing together IoT and big data techniques to feed a real-time dashboard of current and predicted transport network status.

A New Data Architecture for the App Economy - StampedeCon 2013
At the StampedeCon 2013 Big Data conference in St. Louis, Anant Jhingran, VP of Products at Apigee, discusses A New Data Architecture for the App Economy. It has been clear for quite some time that traditional warehouses do not cut it for unstructured and semistructured data, and therefore new systems such as NoSQL and Hadoop have emerged. But these systems throw the baby out with the bathwater. Traditional warehouses were built on the premise that applications can be simpler because the databases did a lot. Of course, the penalty for this was that the application’s world view had to fit the relational, database world view. In the new Big Data system, the primitives have been lowered so much (simple key value pair, or completely unstructured tuple structure), that the applications now have to do a lot more. We argue that there is a happy medium. We have studied the kinds of data that sits in the app economy, and the data structures that need to be built on top of NoSQL and Hadoop that considerably speed up Insights in the app economy without requiring every problem to be coded from scratch.
