Purpose.
Gandhi-Jinnah Talks
✣ Lord Wavell released Gandhi from jail
in 1944 due to ill health.
✣ Gandhi sent a letter to jinnah to hold
meetings to discuss political, social
and other issues of the people of sub-
continent.
✣ These meetings were held in Bombay
at Jinnah’s place during 9th to 26th of
September,1944
5
Gandhi-Jinnah Talks
✣ Gandhi held these meetings to try his
best to take the decision of partition
back from his side but Jinnah refused.

Big concept
Bring the attention of your audience over a key concept using icons or
illustrations
7
During these meetings it was decided from
congress that Sindh, Punjab, NWFP as Muslim
majority areas but Gandhi also tried his best to
refrain the province of Punjab, Bengal and Assam
becoming a Muslim majority province and be
divided communally but Jinnah refused his
demand and said that the province would become
“maimed and mutilated”.
Events:
8
On their second sitting Gandhi gave another
option to Jinnah that the provinces of Punjab,
Bengal and Assam should be given their fortune in
their own hands and decide their future by
themselves but Jinnah again refused to do so as he
was well aware of that these provinces were Hindu
majority areas and the elections would result in
congress wining these areas.
Events:
9
Additionally, after their second meeting another
meeting was held where Gandhi introduced
himself as the sole representative of the Indians
but Jinnah corrected Gandhi by saying that
Gandhi was only the spokesman of Congress.
However Gandhi also opposed the two nation
theory which also added to the tension among the
league and the congress.
Events:
10
At the beginning of these sittings Gandhi talked as
if he was a Hindu representative only and talked
on their terms but as the meetings progressed
Gandhi changed his tone and talked as if he
represented all the Indians. Which was highly
resented by Jinnah. After this there was a deadlock
at the meetings and though these meetings came
to end without providing an appropriate
conclusion.
Events:
11
Failures
Gandhi-Jinnah talks failed due to lack of agreement on major
points. Gandhi also stressed over joint struggle for independence
and said that the issue of partition could be discussed later. Jinnah
rejected this proposal because he didn’t trusted Gandhi and though
wanted independence and partition before the departure of British
from the sub-continent.
Another point of dichotomy was Jinnah’s insistence on the point
that the key subjects of defence and foreign affairs should be with
the provisional and not the central government, in case of united
India. This way, Jinnah wanted maximum degree of provisional
autonomy that could pave the way for partition of India. Gandhi,
conversely, wanted these subjects to be with the central
government.
