4. Gandhi’s basic ideas on women’s rights
were equality in some spheres and
opportunity for self development and
self realization.

5. Gandhi believed that every men and women had
a duty to perform in the interest of self-
realization and social well being while arguing
that she should labour under no legal disability
not suffered by men

6. Gandhi believed that lack of education and
information was the root cause of all the
evils against women. He believed that
education is therefore necessary for women
as it is for men.

7. The dowry system should be abolished
because it debased marriage,reducing it to an
arrangement for money.

the impotance of
their participation in
political and social
matters and
exhorted them to
join the nationalist
struggles.

10. Gandhiji was against the
practice of female
infanticide.Gandhi was clearly
of the view that people should
make no distinction between
a son and a daughter and both
should be welcomed alike.

spinning and the
propagation of khadi and
swadeshi.Acc. to him for
middle class it should
supplement the income
and for very poor women
it could be the means of
livelihood.

13. CRITICISM
Critics argue that Gandhi did not regard men and women as
identical. He did not want women to neglect their families or
leave the traditional role of nurturer. He wanted women to
attend to the bringing up of their children.
Gandhi’s ideal woman was the mythical Sita,the self sacrificing
monogamous wife of Rama ,who guarded her chastity and
remained loyal to Rama in spite of many provocations.
