The Gallery was brought into existence, in 1651 by a Papal brief issued by Giambattiste Pamphilj, elected to the papal throne in 1644 as Innocent X. He placed the paintings and furnishings of Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona under the encumbrance of entail. The collection was enlarged later in 1647 by marriage to the Borghese. Today the gallery has a fairly large collection of around 400 paintings, including works by Rapheal, ?Tintoretto, Titian, Caravaggio, Bernini and some Flemish masters. It most famous painting is by Velazquez’s portrait of Pope innocent X.

2. The gallery is a little difficult to find. It is on the southern end of Via dei Corso
(not far from Piazza Venezia). The entrance does not look like a gallery at all. The
photo shows the entrance to the gallery and the enclosed garden of the palazzo.

Hans Memling (c1440-1494) was a
prolific and eclectic German-born
Netherlandish painter. He was one
of the main artist in Bruges, when it
was the main trading hub for Low
Countries. He was also a follower
of Rogier van der Weyden.
This painting is considered to be
one the artist finest creations. The
figures are St John the Evangelist,
Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalen and the
unknown donor. Behind them is the
walled city of Jerusalem

church of Sainta Maria dei Servi of
Ferrara. Ortolano was a student of
Lorenzo Costa, but influenced by
Venetian style of Bellini.

mission in 1508. This bought him into direct
contact with the more realistic observation and the
objective visual analysis of the Italian style. On the
left hand side of this diptych is a copy of Van Eyck

else. Although Titian did painted a several clothed versions, but one version is now in Naples.

Mazzola. He was a Italian Mannerist. His most known
work is the above painting called Antea, in the National
Museum of Capodimonte in Naples.

This is a rather unusual portrait.
It is a portrait of a threatening
man. With his hand pointing
downward, commanding the
observer to knee down and pay
their respects.
The composition of the painting is
also rather dark. He was a
dominant figure in Genoa and also
an extraordinarily talented naval
commander. He re-established
Genoese independence after
protracted domination by the
French. He was called the Prince
by Genoese.

Lavinia Fontana was one of
the few female professional
artist. She, like her father,
was a Bolognese Mannerist
and best known for her highly
reputed portraits.

painter. He often known for his

with dramatic scenes of battles.
He converted many patrons
and fellows artists to a more
non-naturalistic and anti-
classical form of mannerism.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder visited Italy in 1551 to 1553. He must have made a number of drawings of the
area. The battle was imaginary, the semicircular structure and the topographically inaccurate but included
the volcano Vesuvius.

Mary Magdalene was a follower of
Jesus. She was a prostitute by
profession. So a Penitent
Magdalene often painted in a more
erotic pose.
Caravaggio was a rebel artist. He
often painted religious figures as
natural as possible. By comparison
with the other Penitent Magdalene,
Caravaggio’s Magdalene was
modest. She could had been a
housewife of the time, apart from
the jewellery on the floor.

A tired Virgin Mary with her baby
Jesus on their way to Egypt. After
the visit of the Magi, King Herod
tried to seek out Jesus to kill him.
An angel appeared to Joseph in a
dream telling him to flee to Egypt
with Mary. Caravaggio painted a
moment in the journey, when the
Holy Family was resting on the
Flight into Egypt.

that he was well-known
for. This is the man who
held on power with an iron
grip. His calculated gaze
warn us, to approach with
care.
This painting is universally

painted the subject but
also his psychological
penetration on the
character.
