This document discusses Paul's letter to the Galatians regarding salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. It summarizes Paul opposing Peter for separating himself from Gentiles out of fear of the circumcision party. The document examines ways Christians can rely on works instead of grace and encourages living out freedom in Christ through love rather than using freedom as an opportunity for the flesh.
4. Context
Paul’s letter to the churches in
Galatia
A “different” gospel?
Salvation by grace alone through
faith alone in Christ alone
Purpose of the Law
5. Lesson Objective
Neither salvation nor
maturation is obtained
by keeping the law but
by receiving the promise
of salvation and of the
Spirit by grace through
faith.

7. Examining our Hearts
• My prayers often include some type of
bargaining with God (I’ll do better, I’ll pray
more, I’ll stop that, I’ll try harder, etc.)
• I feel better about my sin when I compare
myself to others
• I believe that God saves good people

8. Examining our Hearts
• I feel like God might change His mind about
me
• I have a list of religious acts that make me
feel better/worse about my standing with
God when I do/don’t do them
• Being a Christian is exhausting to me

9. Galatians 2:11-12
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I
opposed him to his face, because he stood
condemned. 12 For before certain men
came from James, he was eating with the
Gentiles; but when they came he drew back
and separated himself, fearing the
circumcision party.
10. Jerusalem Council
• Pharisees: Acts 15:5b “It is necessary to circumcise them
and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”
•Peter’s response: Acts 15:8-11 “And God, who knows the
heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit
just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us
and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. Now,
therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a
yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers
nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we
will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as
they will.”
11. Galatians 2:11-12
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I
opposed him to his face, because he stood
condemned. 12 For before certain men
came from James, he was eating with the
Gentiles; but when they came he drew back
and separated himself, fearing the
circumcision party.
12. Where are you most in
danger of being a
people-pleaser and
ceasing to be a servant
of Christ?
13. Galatians 2:13
13 And the rest of the Jews acted
hypocritically along with him, so that even
Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.
14. What version of God are
people around you most
likely to believe?
15. Galatians 2:14
14 But when I saw that their conduct was
not in step with the truth of the gospel, I
said to Cephas before them all, “If you,
though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like
a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live
like Jews?”
16. Galatians 2:15-16
15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not
Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a
person is not justified by works of the law
but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also
have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be
justified by faith in Christ and not by works
of the law, because by works of the law no
one will be justified.
17. Why do you do the
“religious” things that
you do?
18. Galatians 2:17-18
17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in
Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is
Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!
18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove
myself to be a transgressor.
19. Galatians 2:19
19 For through the law I died to the law, so
that I might live to God.
20. Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no
longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and
gave himself for me.
21. Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no
longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and
gave himself for me.
22. What fruit in your life
reveals that you have
been crucified with
Christ?
23. Galatians 2:21
21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if
justification were through the law, then
Christ died for no purpose.
24. Why Freedom?
Galatians 5:13-14
13 For you were called to freedom,
brothers. Only do not use your freedom as
an opportunity for the flesh, but through
love serve one another. 14 For the whole
law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.”
25. There is therefore now no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the
law of the Spirit of life has set you free in
Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
For God has done what the law, weakened
by the flesh, could not do.
Romans 8:1-3a
26. Luke 12:32
Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s
good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Luke 12:32
Galatia = region of churches Paul visited on a missionary journey
Judaizers coming in and attacking Paul personally and preaching a distorted gospel…requiring circumcision for salvation
Paul argues throughout Galatians that salvation is by grace through faith, and not works…that is what the Galatians were being tempted to believe, that they could (and should) add to their salvation by observing all of the Jewish ceremonial and ritual laws…Paul says that is not a gospel at all…
Purpose of the Law = show us our sin (like an x-ray) and guard us (keep us separate) from the world
OT shows us that the law could never produce righteousness in the heart of man
Why is Paul so upset? Because this is a difference in salvation or not…not just a minor detail
Usually gives some commendation in his letters, but not here…gets straight to the point…they would know he’s upset
Read whole passage
Before we judge the Galatians…
Bargaining – instead of confessing my sin (I AM A SINNER, THAT’S WHY I SIN) I act like my sin is a condition I can fix through religious activity
Comparison – any other gospel creates an atmosphere where I measure up well and my sins aren’t all that bad and I remain enslaved and never deal with the real root issue of my sin…sit in judgment on others…
Good people…there are none, the Bible makes it very clear!!!!
God doesn’t change His mind about us because it was never based on us…He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before Him…before we had ever done anything good or bad…it’s based on Him, not me! Good news!!!
Religious acts…good when they are done out of a heart that has been saved, not good when they are done to try and earn salvation…
Exhaustion…always trying to earn God’s favor instead of resting in the freedom Christ provides…
Cephas: Peter
Antioch: capital of the Roman province of Syria, first church to bring together Jewish & Gentile Christians in worship & fellowship, and center of missions (first to send out missionaries) specifically to Gentiles
Came from James: doesn’t mean that James was promoting their behavior, but they were likely from his church/region
fearing the circumcision party – Gal. 1:10, 6:12-13…who do you fear?
Jerusalem Council: next slide
Jerusalem Council: is circumcision necessary for salvation? No
Purpose of circumcision: sign of the covenant God made with Abraham…identification as His people
eating with Gentiles…big deal to pious Jews that it was unlawful for them to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation (Acts 10:28), but Peter was shown that he should not call any person common or unclean
Even if Peter’s actions were in line with Paul’s argument in 1 Cor. 9:19-22 (all things to all people for the sake of the gospel), trying to compromise to appease the Jewish Christians, Paul feels that any compromise here is compromise in the gospel itself
Peter’s withdrawal from fellowship with the Gentiles violates the unity of the church and was treating these Christians as second-class citizens, insulting the cross of Christ
Not a question of liberty and of bearing with others’ weaknesses, but one affecting the essence of the gospel, whether the Gentiles are to be virtually “compelled to live as do the Jews” in order to be justified
Where am I tempted to make the gospel “easier to hear”? When I change it AT ALL, it is no longer the gospel, it is no longer good news, it is no longer freedom…it becomes a curse, a weight, slavery, and death…
Libby…me being “nice”, but inconsequential
Led astray…our actions are on display…we are Christ’s witnesses…what we do effects others…
14: if you’re a Jew and don’t worry about keeping the laws anymore, how are you going to force the Gentiles to keep the laws (ceremonial customs) as a requirement for salvation?
Gentile sinners: those that don’t keep the ceremonial Mosaic Law
Moral accomplishments/raised in church, etc. have NO BEARING on salvation…we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified
justified (counted righteous), works of the law, faith in Christ Jesus (repetition)
Justification: God’s act of pardoning sinners and accepting them as righteous for Christ’s sake…in it, God puts permanently right their previously estranged relationship with Himself. This justifying sentence is God’s bestowal of a status of acceptance for Jesus’ sake (2 Cor. 5:21)…our justification is on a just basis, with Christ’s righteousness reckoned to our account (Rom. 8:33-34…we are secure no matter what because our justification is based on Christ’s work alone)
15: Jewish Christians are also justified by faith, which does not give them any advantage over Gentiles who must come to God on the same terms
No advantage (salvation-wise) that you were in church every time the doors were open as a kid, etc.
Quiet time, church attendance, Bible study, being moral, serving with missions, helping fix someone’s house, etc.
Give some thought to that this week…
If as a tool for sanctification out of a heart that knows I am saved only by grace through faith in Christ and not any of these things, then great…if I think they somehow earn me salvation or keep me in right standing with God, we have a major problem…
Because you’ve always grown up doing them? My story with the church I grew up in and wanting to get baptized in college…
Found to be sinners: those who don’t keep the ceremonial law…we are no longer keeping the law and trusting that for salvation, but trusting Christ…
Does that make Christ a servant of sin, since we are trusting Him and not the law anymore? Certainly not!
The real sinner is the one who rejects Christ’s offer and clings to the law for salvation instead after it has already been torn down; the law-breaker is not the one who turns away from the law and towards Christ for salvation, but the one who turns back again from Christ to the law and looks to it to provide what only Christ can
17: righteousness by faith does not lead to sinful living (if we just preach this gospel, people will go around doing whatever they want…if that’s the case, they aren’t really saved, don’t really understand the gospel)
19: the law itself taught Paul the way of Christ and Paul’s death to sin in Christ
Death to the law does not violate the law, for Christ met the law’s demands…it is therefore “through the law” that believers are released from the bondage & condemnation of the law
The three purposes of the law
Mirror reflecting to us both the perfect righteousness of God and our sinfulness and shortcomings
Augustine: “the law bids us, as we try to fulfill its requirements, and become wearied in our weakness under it, to know how to ask the help of grace.”
Civil use: restraining evil…though the law cannot change the heart, it can to some extent inhibit lawlessness by its threats of judgment
Guides the regenerate into the good words that God has planned for them (Eph. 2:10)…tells God’s children what will please their heavenly Father (greater joy this way!)
Christians are free from the law as a system of salvation, but under the law of Christ as a rule of life
Law of love (love God, love neighbor as self)
Love, which the law demands, has no regard for anybody’s merit, and pours itself alike upon the unworthy, the wicked, and those without gratitude. – John Calvin
From this effect of the work of the Spirit, Christ shows that the children of God are only those who, like him, are generous and kind. – John Calvin
Romans 10:4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Christ is the goal or purpose of the law!
Union with Christ…He represented us in His death & resurrection…it’s a living union…He is present with the believer by the Spirit…
Being a Christian doesn’t mean believing Christian doctrine only…it means death…daily death to self, to trying to earn God’s favor, to self-righteousness…
I Boast No More – Isaac Watts…1600-1700s
No more my God, I boast no more, of all the duties I have done, I quit the hopes I held before, to trust the merits of Thy Son
The best obedience of my hands, dares not appear before Thy throne, but faith can answer Thy demands, by pleading what my Lord has done

FREEDOM should be a big key!! Freedom to obey and not be concerned with all of the things that everyone else is concerned with…
For me…change in heart motivations for moral behavior…
Law goes from being over us to condemn us to under us as a sure place for our feet…this is the way, walk in it… a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path…
21: righteousness (before God & in ones’ behavior) comes through Christ’s life in the believer (union with Christ…He represented us in His death and resurrection)
Christ’s death shows that the law has no power to justify us…if it could, then the death of Christ is superfluous
Love your neighbor as yourself…we’ve heard this before!
Good Samaritan…question of “who is my neighbor”, Jesus responds with “who was a neighbor”…idea of serving others…
Today: serving others by loving them…this looks like compassion as we are caring for others as guards & stewards
How does this verse refine your view of God? Not about us trying harder or doing better to try and earn salvation/right standing, etc.
Salvation is a free gift…FREE!!!!!
Woman at the well…Jesus brought up her past so that she’d know that everything He offered her was with full knowledge of all of her sin…
If you really believed this, how would it change you?
Not freedom to do whatever we want, but freedom to seek fullness of joy in God through obedience to His law
