9. PERSPECTIVE: SAMUEL
A text cannot mean what it never could have meant to its author or
his or her readers. - Jen Wilkin
Who wrote it: unknown
When was it written: 9th-8th century BC (after David’s reign)
To whom was it written: Israelites after these events
What style: Historical narrative
What was the purpose: sovereignty of God
Major themes: character comparison, God raises up & God brings
down, kingship
11. 1 Samuel 16:1
1 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will
you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected
him from being king over Israel? Fill your
horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse
the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for
myself a king among his sons.”
12. 1 Samuel 16:2-3
2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul
hears it, he will kill me.” And the LORD said,
“Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have
come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ 3 And invite
Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you
what you shall do. And you shall anoint for
me him whom I declare to you.”
13. 1 Samuel 16:4-5
4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded and
came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city
came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you
come peaceably?” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I
have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate
yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.”
And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and
invited them to the sacrifice.
14. 1 Samuel 16:6-7
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and
thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before
him.” 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not
look on his appearance or on the height of his
stature, because I have rejected him. For the
LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the
outward appearance, but the LORD looks on
the heart.”
15. 1 Samuel 16:8-10
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him
pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has
the LORD chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made
Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has
the LORD chosen this one.” 10 And Jesse made
seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And
Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not
chosen these.”
16. 1 Samuel 16:11-12
11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons
here?” And he said, “There remains yet the
youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him,
for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12
And he sent and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was
handsome. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint
him, for this is he.”
17. 1 Samuel 16:13
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the midst of his brothers.
And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon
David from that day forward. And Samuel
rose up and went to Ramah.
19. 1 Samuel 16:1
1 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will
you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected
him from being king over Israel? Fill your
horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse
the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for
myself a king among his sons.”

New Beginnings Start with Going
24. 1 Samuel 16:2-3
2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul

“Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have

yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.”
And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and
invited them to the sacrifice.
26. 1 Samuel 15:22
22 And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great
delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in
obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to
obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen
than the fat of rams.
27. 1 Samuel 16:6-7
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and
thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before
him.” 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not
look on his appearance or on the height of his
stature, because I have rejected him. For the
LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the
outward appearance, but the LORD looks on
the heart.”
28. The LORD looks on the heart…
•Poor in spirit
•Mourn over sin
•Meek/submissive/lay down “rights”
•Hunger & thirst for righteousness
•Cherishes (keeps) commandments
•Lays up treasures in heaven
•Right actions + right motives
29. 1 Samuel 16:8-10
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him
pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has
the LORD chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made
Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has

judges rightly, how would that

New Beginnings Don’t Always
Look Like We Think They Should
33. Our Sovereign & Just Judge
1 Peter 2:22-25
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his
mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in
return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but
continued entrusting himself to him who judges
justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the
tree, that we might die to sin and live to
righteousness. By his wounds you have been
healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have
now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your
souls.
Editor's Notes
Character comparison:
Saul & David
Kingship: like the nations vs. under God’s authority
Joshua & conquest
Exodus is over, they have now taken and are living in the Promised Land
Choose this day whom you will serve
Judges
No one ruler, God sent 12 judges, progressively worse
everyone did what was right in his own eyes
Setting the stage for a king
Saul’s rise & fall
The people demand a king…right desire, wrong motives (a king like the nations) & distrust in God’s provision & timing
God gives them over to their own desires…
Saul is anointed king in a somewhat private ceremony
Tall & handsome…looks the part
Has a public display of power where people see him as king
Disobedience
Sacrifice without the priests
Partial obedience with the Amalekites
God rejects Saul as king
Sovereign: has the power AND authority to perfectly execute His will in all things, and He does just that
Sovereign over endings
Sovereign over beginnings
Judges rightly in all things
How long will you grieve over Saul?
God’s rejection of Saul wasn’t an angry reaction but a fixed and unchangeable decree, His righteous wrath as part of His omniscient plan…Samuel should have recognized this and submitted to God’s will quickly
Not that it wasn’t ok to mourn at all, but shouldn’t continue on in this sorrow so long, since he should recognize God’s sovereignty
God is working out his plan, Samuel should take comfort and his joy in God should be greater than his sorrow over his “personal loss” in Saul…Israel will be better off with God’s choice
I have rejected him: God is the sovereign over the authorities…He appoints rulers & He brings them down
Transitions from schools…easier this time in a lot of ways…holding things more loosely…
Fill your horn with oil & go: I am working out a new beginning after this ending, get on with the purpose I have, submit to My will and plans
David is 8th son…8 signifies new beginnings
Jesse the Bethlehemite: grandson of Ruth & Boaz, great-grandson of Rahab (Gentile prostitute from Jericho, in lineage of Christ in Matthew 1)
Micah prophesies that the Messiah will come from Bethlehem
Matthew 2: a Ruler who will shepherd my people Israel…
I have provided for myself: contrast with the choice of a king for “them”
Samuel’s warning of what their king will be like…
He will take…
1 Sam. 8:18 “And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.” But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
David, the king after God’s own heart (the king of God’s own choosing)
Saul & David: early success in military victories
Grievous Sin:
David & Bathsheba
Saul: offers unlawful sacrifice, partial obedience
Not just a mistake, but a rejection of the word of the Lord
What do I need to trust Him with in order to obey in going?
I will show you what you shall do: if He calls us to it, He will provide the way, means, etc.
Anoint: the king alone has the title of ”the Lord’s anointed”
Anointed to signify:
This was their calling
They were authorized to perform it
They had God’s help
English word “Messiah” represents the Hebrew word meaning “anointed”
In NT, “Christ” represents Greek word “Cristos” which also means “anointed”
Whom I declare to you: God is sovereign…He is the One in charge here…
Do you come peaceably?
No reason given…likely because of Samuel’s prophetic function as an instrument of God’s judgment
Sacrifice: author is setting us up here for the idea of right sacrifice vs. false…right looking vs. false…
Last we heard about sacrifice was with Saul…disobeyed God & kept the best of the livestock of the Amalekites in order to ”sacrifice to the Lord”
Appearances vs. the heart
God knows & judges rightly
How we see vs. how God sees
Don’t look on his appearance or height of his stature, because I have rejected him
Who else appeared capable, desirable, etc. and was rejected? Saul!
Tall & handsome like Saul, rejected like Saul
WE SEEK A CERTAIN TYPE OF APPEARANCE, GOD SEEKS A CERTAIN TYPE OF HEART
God’s standards are inward, not outward
A main theme in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount
Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger & thirst for righteousness
Commandments: love God & love others
Treasure in heaven (right values, can hold things of earth loosely)
Not just right actions, but right motives
Fruit of the Spirit
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS VS.
IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT
TRAINING YOUR PHYSICAL BODY
INVESTING IN MATERIAL POSSESSIONS
COMFORT/CONTROL/APPROVAL/POWER
Romans 2:28-29 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not the letter. His praise is not from man, but from God.
God’s sovereignty: He is the Chooser
Not based on merit or how we would choose…His choosing is perfect, for His own glory
Complete and total sovereignty…He has the RIGHT to choose as He will
He is keeping the sheep
More clearly shows us that David is God’s choosing and not the design of Jesse or Samuel…completely overlooked by them
Where is David? Keeping the sheep…doing what will prepare him for kingship, busy with the task God has given him
The one who would be king wasn’t even invited
Hannah’s song: 1 Samuel 2:7 The LORD brings low and he exalts…HE IS SOVEREIGN…David wasn’t even thought of to invite, now he is waited for as the main guest
We have an idea of the way things should go…not always the way God has planned!
What do I lean on when my way contrasts with God’s way? To whom/what do I submit? Feelings or truth about God?
Ruddy: glowing with health
Beautiful eyes & was handsome: a fine appearance
He’s not ugly! BECAUSE APPEARANCE JUST ISN’T WHAT MATTERS!!!!
Arise, anoint him, for this is he: David is the king of God’s choosing…has God’s authorization
Horn of oil
Saul had a flask, David gets a horn
Luke 1:67-69 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David…”
Horn: a mighty and valiant helper, the author of deliverance, of the Messiah
Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David
David is the man of God’s own choosing
Contrast with Saul…verse 14 says “Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul…”
When things don’t look they way I think they should, do I trust that God is the sovereign and perfect Judge?
Where do I tend to lean on my own understanding?
When I think I am being treated unfairly, do I entrust myself to Him who judges justly or do I try to take matters into my own hands?
David the shepherd, chosen by the sovereign and holy Judge, points us to Christ, the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls…
