This Bible study class examines Genesis 12 and 15, focusing on God's promises to Abram and Abram's response of faith. The lesson objective is that God gives us grace in our suffering and doubts and declares us righteous through faith in Christ alone. The study looks at how God promised to make Abram a great nation but Abram doubted due to being childless in old age. God declared that Abram's offspring would be as numerous as the stars, and Abram believed this, counting it to him as righteousness. The discussion emphasizes that we are saved by grace through faith, not works.
3. PERSPECTIVE: GENESIS
A text cannot mean what it never could have meant to its author of
his or her readers.
- Jen Wilkin
Who wrote it: Moses
When was it written: Sometime around 1400 BC, during the 40
year period of wandering in the desert.
To whom was it written: to the Israelites who were led out of Egypt
during their time in the desert.
What style: Historical with some poetry and prophecy.
Why was it written: To give the nation of Israel a history and a rule
of life as they entered Canaan. To remind them of their past and
prepare them for their future.
4. Lesson Objective
God gives us grace
in our suffering and
our doubts and
declares us
righteous by grace
through faith in
Christ.
5. Genesis 12:1
1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from
your country and your kindred and your
father’s house to the land that I will show
you.”
6. Genesis 12:2-3
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I
will bless you and make your name great, so
that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless
those who bless you, and him who
dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the
families of the earth will be blessed.
7. Genesis 12:4-5a
4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him,
and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-
five years old when he departed from Haran. 5
And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his
brother’s son, and all their possessions that
they had gathered, and the people that they
had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go
to the land of Canaan.
9. Genesis 15:1
1 After these things the word of the LORD
came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not,
Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall
be very great.”
10. What in your life demonstrates
that God is your great reward?
Grace in our Suffering
11. Genesis 15:2-3
2 But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will
you give me, for I continue childless, and the
heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3
And Abram said, “Behold, you have given
me no offspring, and a member of my
household will be my heir.”
12. Genesis 15:4-5
4 And behold, the word
of the LORD came to
him: “This man shall not
be your heir; your very
own son shall be your
heir.” 5 And he brought
him outside and said,
“Look toward heaven,
and number the stars, if
you are able to number
them.” Then he said to
him, “So shall your
offspring be.”
13. God’s chosen pace, as well as his
chosen place for us – that
bewildering, confusing, painful
place where we feel like we’re
stuck – is redemptive. More
than we know. There is more at
stake than we can see and more
going on than meets our eyes.
-Jon Bloom (Desiring God)
14. To what degree does the Bible
have authority in my life? To what
degree do I submit to God’s time
and way of accomplishing His
promise?
Grace in our Doubting
15. Genesis 15:6
6 And he believed the LORD, and he counted
it to him as righteousness.
16. Romans 4:9-12
9 Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for
the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to
Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted
to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised?
It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 He
received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the
righteousness that he had by faith while he was still
uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father
of all who believe without being circumcised, so that
righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and
to make him the father of the circumcised who are not
merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of
the faith that our father Abraham had before he was
circumcised.
17. Hebrews 11:6, 8-16
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near
to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 8
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to
receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in
tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was
looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is
God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was
past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore
from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the
stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having
seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they
were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it
clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that
land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore
God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
18. To what/Whom do I attribute my
salvation? What effect does that
have on my life?
Declared Righteous by
Grace through Faith
19. Application (Jen Wilkin – How to Study the Bible)
• Attributes of God, myself in relation
• PAST (prayer, actions, speech, thoughts)
• Circles of influence
• Primary relationships
God of:
Power, Authority, Intimate (Abram) & Expansive (Stars) Knowledge, Protection
(Shield), Presence, Infinite Worth (Reward), Faithfulness, Intentionality, Salvation
Editor's Notes
The God of Genesis is the God of the rest of the Bible
Abram: exalted father…later changed to Abraham (father of a multitude)…called friend of God
Doesn’t say “God is my friend” (Jesus is my homeboy), but God calls HIM friend…one person in the Bible referred to this way…reverence
Leaving “yours” and going to Mine…leave your ways and allegiance to self, come take on My ways and My plan…allegiance to God
I will: God is sovereign and able…has all authority & all power…He is the One acting here…dependent on Him alone…
Abram is 75 when God tells him he will make him a great nation…no kids…
Repeated in the second half of chapter 15 as well
See this at the burning bush…
Pattern: God promises
After these things:
Lot is living in Sodom, and there is war going on involving Sodom…Lot gets captured in the midst of it, so Abram goes and fights and defeats these other nations
King of Sodom offers a blessing/reward to Abram & he turns it down (lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’)
Word of the LORD: phrase used when connected with a vision to denote a prophetic message
Fear not: the kings he has just defeated may come and attack him again…fear not those who are against you
Will mean a lot to original audience since they are going to be faced people who are against them (dispossessing those in the Promised Land)…have just come from Egypt, a people that is against them
General assurance of God’s kindness and goodwill toward Abram
Abram: knows him personally…knows him by name…He sees & hears & knows (like in Exodus)
I am your shield: I am a shield to you, present with you, actually caring for you…not only the God of Israel, but a God TO Israel
Psalm 144:2 (David) He is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.
Your reward shall be very great:
I am your shield, your very great reward
You just turned down a reward from the king of Sodom, you won’t be losing out because of it…you have the ultimate reward, God Himself…He is the greater possession, relationship with Him
God is fully aware of your current situation and what He is asking of you…how does knowing this comfort you? Convict you?
Is God your great reward or are you in search of something else?
If heaven had everything and everyone you wanted to be there, but not God, would you still want to go?
If God is God of Infinite Worth, how does that change my: (infertility struggle)
Prayers: I pray more for God and His presence and less for things/materials/circumstances
Actions: I hold possessions loosely and value God over everything…I value and love people rightly because I see God as infinite worth and not status, titles etc.
Speech: I have speech that is gracious and seasoned with salt towards those who are going through difficult situations, and I make much of God because He alone has infinite worth
Thoughts: I think about suffering and difficulties differently…I have patience and steadfastness to endure because I count everything as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus
Pattern: Abram objects
Lord GOD: sovereign Lord…all authority to act as He wills
What will you give me: NIV - what CAN you give me…
Disconnect between what he knows to be true about God and what appears to be when he looks through the lens of his circumstance
God has just said that He is giving Abram Himself!!
I continue childless: I shall die childless (about 10 years since the promise in Genesis 12)…Abram would be about 85 at this point and Sarai 75…
No offspring:
Israel is familiar with this idea of “no possible way for this to work”…Red Sea deliverance
Like in Creation…God creates something where there was nothing (no children)
While promised mercies are delayed our unbelief and impatience are apt to conclude them denied. (commentary)
How do you respond when your current situation APPEARS impossible/contradictory to what you know to be true about God? On what do you lean? Do YOU have the sword of the Spirit at your own disposal?
Heir: this is the promised seed, ultimately Christ!! Through whom all the nations of the earth will be blessed
God is Creator…HE & HE ALONE MAKES HEIRS
Number the stars if you are able: God has all knowledge…what kind of knowledge do you have?
Psalm 147:4 He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
He not only knows how many stars there are, HE DETERMINES how many there are!!! And names them!!!
About 30,000 stars are listed in the General Catalog used by astronomers and it is estimated that there are 100 billion more
So shall your offspring be: this promise WILL be fulfilled…don’t need to try and twist it or figure it out on your own…don’t need to questions what God said or meant…”maybe He meant ____” (maybe He just meant that it will be an heir from my household…)
Everything happens according to God’s timetable and plan…nothing happens outside of that…
God is trying to show Abram the scope of the finish line…He is saying that one day, every person who walks in faith with God will trace his or her origin back to Abram…do I see that all of the events of my life are under His control?
If God is God of Intentionality & Authority, (He plans & acts) how does that change my: (once we knew we were leaving WHS, how I realized how caught up in “my way” and controlling everything (including people’s impression of me) I was…)
Prayers: I ask and trust Him to act according to His plan and will and time which is always best
Actions: I am intentional in the relationships I have with others…I make plans to love on people and then do it…I am an initiator in relationships, not always waiting for others to “be a friend” to me…
At the same time, I don’t take matters into my own hands but trust & wait for God…
Speech: I think over my words and am quick to listen and slow to speak…I seek to speak truth in love…
Thoughts: I trust that God’s ways are best and am less anxious and angry when my timetable isn’t the one we’re using
Quoted three places (Romans, Galatians, James) in NT to demonstrate doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone (not by works!!)
Believed: trust, faithful, assurance, sure…first instance of this is the Bible…reversal of Adam & Eve who DISTRUSTED God!!!
Counted: credited, reckoned…like a ledger…
2 Corinthians 5:19 That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to use the message of reconciliation…
Romans 4:7-8 Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiving, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.
Righteousness: counted right before God
Not a description of Abram, but of what God did for him!! Abram’s faith was accepted by God INSTEAD OF righteousness…before the law!! Before he had done anything to make himself “worthy”…in fact he’s already passed Sarai off as his sister…shows this covenant & our salvation is based on God and not any “redeeming quality” in us…
Imputed righteousness….the righteousness of Christ credited to my account by grace through faith…
By grace through faith…those are children of Abraham who are children not of the law but of faith (Galatians 3:7)
Living in a land as sojourners vs. living in a city with foundations (earth vs. heaven)
Since she considered him faithful who had promised…her faith wasn’t based in experience but in the ultimate REALITY, God Himself…
Died in faith not having received the things promised…Abram is promised to be father of many nations but dies as father of one…do you still trust God even when the arc of His plan for you may not be accomplished in your lifetime?
Where are your thoughts? The land from which you have gone out, or the better country promised to you?
If I think I earned my salvation through good works, I will be restless and always trying to prove myself…won’t experience freedom…or if I know I can’t earn it, I’ll be hopeless and eventually give up…
If God is God of Salvation, how does that change my: (early part of my story where I tried to earn salvation through good works, and second part where I wanted to keep on sinning but appear righteous…couldn’t reconcile why I was a “Christian” but didn’t ever want to submit to Christ)
Prayers: totally dependent on Him…come to Him in prayer and willingly confess sin & repent
Actions: submit them to the authority of Christ
Speech: submit my words to the authority of Christ
Thoughts: submit my thoughts to the authority of Christ…change in what I desire…
Authority
An area that I struggle with is PRIDE…
If I know that God is the God of all authority, I can see myself someone who does not have all authority or rights to do whatever I please…God alone does…I should submit to Him…
P: makes my prayers genuine…for humility and to acknowledge Him as Lord and submit fully to Him…and makes my prayers necessary…I know I can’t be humble on my own…
A: would be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger…would not get bent out of shape every time my will is violated, would act more on behalf of others
S: would point to Him since I would acknowledge Him as having all authority and not me…
T: would think more of others…wouldn’t be so concerned with getting my way
Circles of influence: would put others first knowing that it is not all about me and instead I would try and point others to Him
How might my primary relationships be changed? Others would see a view of God high and lifted up…would have deeper and more meaningful and beneficial relationships with others because I am loving them rightly because I’m loving God rightly…
