Transformations Something new Miracles
7. Genesis 1:2
2 The earth was without form and void, and
darkness was over the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the
face of the waters.
8. Genesis 1:3-5
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and
there was light. 4 And God saw that the
light was good. And God separated the light
from the darkness. 5 God called the light
Day, and the darkness he called Night. And
there was evening and there was morning,
the first day.
11. How has the God of creation
moved in your life?
Psalm 51:10
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew
a right spirit within me.
12. Genesis 1:6-8
6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the
midst of the waters, and let it separate the
waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the
expanse and separated the waters that were
under the expanse from the waters that were
above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God
called the expanse Heaven. And there was
evening and there was morning, the second
day.
13. Genesis 1:9-10
9 And God said, “Let the waters under the
heavens be gathered together into one
place, and let the dry land appear.” And it
was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth,
and the waters that were gathered together
he called Seas. And God saw that it was
good.
14. Genesis 1:11-13
11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout
vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees
bearing fruit in which is their seed, each
according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was
so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation,
plants yielding seed according to their own
kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their
seed, each according to its kind. And God saw
that it was good. 13 And there was evening
and there was morning, the third day.
15. Genesis 1:14-15
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the
expanse of the heavens to separate the day
from the night. And let them be for signs
and for seasons, and for days and years, 15
and let them be lights in the expanse of the
heavens to give light upon the earth.” And
it was so.
16. Genesis 1:16-19
16 And God made the two great lights – the
greater light to rule the day and the lesser light
to rule the night – and the stars. 17 And God
set them in the expanse of the heavens to give
light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and
over the night, and to separate the light from
the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19 And there was evening and there was
morning, the fourth day.
17. Genesis 1:20-23
20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with
swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above
the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21 So
God created the great sea creatures and every living
creature that moves, with which the waters swarm,
according to their kinds, and every winged bird
according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them saying, “Be fruitful and
multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds
multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening
and there was morning, the fifth day.
18. Genesis 1:24-25
24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth
living creatures according to their kinds –
livestock and creeping things and beasts of the
earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
25 And God made the beasts of the earth
according to their kinds and the livestock
according to their kinds, and everything that
creeps on the ground according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
19. Genesis 1:26
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our
image, after our likeness. And let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea and
over the birds of the heavens and over the
livestock and over all the earth and over
every creeping thing that creeps on the
earth.”
21. Genesis 1:27
27 So God created man in his own image, in
the image of God he created him; male and
female he created them.
22. How should we be like God, and how
should we live acknowledging Him as
separate/holy?
23. Genesis 1:28
28 And God blessed them. And God said to
them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the
earth and subdue it, and have dominion
over the fish of the sea and over the birds of
the heavens and over every living thing that
moves on the earth.”
24. Genesis 1:29-31
29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every
plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the
earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall
have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the
earth and to every bird of the heavens and to
everything that creeps on the earth, everything that
has the breath of life, I have given every green plant
for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw
everything that he had made, and behold, it was
very good. And there was evening and there was
morning, the sixth day.
27. Genesis 2:1-3
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were
finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on
the seventh day God finished his work that
he had done, and he rested on the seventh
day from all his work that he had done. 3 So
God blessed the seventh day and made it
holy, because on it God rested from all his
work that he had done in creation.
28. Application (Jen Wilkin – How to Study the Bible)
•Attributes of God, myself in relation
•PAST (prayer, actions, speech, thoughts)
•Circles of influence
•Primary relationships
God of:
Creation, Power, Truth, Authority, Order,
Relationship, Provision
Editor's Notes
The God of Genesis is the God of the rest of the Bible
Genesis: means “in the beginning” (Hebrew) & “origin” (Greek)
Recounts God’s creation of the world and His election of Israel to a unique covenant relationship with Him in order to bless a fallen world (through you all the nations of the earth will be blessed)
Who & why are primary focus here, less concerned about how & when
Who God is allows me to know myself rightly…no true knowledge of self apart from knowledge of God
Read passage…listen to pattern & repetition…
God is the first & clear subject of the Bible…it is a book about Him!!! Changes how we read it…
In the beginning, God: Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Created: make from nothing…used of God alone
Heavens & the earth: the whole universe…all things
He is Creator of all things…transcendent…separate from, distinct from His creation, not dependent on it, self-existent
Spirit hovering: Matthew 3:16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him…
New creation in Christ! God ushering in a new creation through the ministry of Christ
God speaks and it happens…omnipotence
Saw that the light was good…God is the determiner of good & evil…source of moral judgment who declares what is good
God separated…fundamental to creation & Israel’s existence…they are to be a light to the nations, separated unto the Lord…will talk more about separation later
God called…ruler of the cosmos…completely sovereign (has the right/authority to do as He pleases)
God brings order out of chaos (pattern of the account)
Power: God speaks and causes things that were not to be…by His very word He creates
Truth: determiner of good and evil, declarer of what is right…source of moral judgment
Authority: God names His creation…it is His to do with it as He pleases…He is sovereign
Common refrain throughout the account
God perfectly executes His will
He brings order out of chaos...the reverse of how all things are on their own, always moving away from order towards chaos…
He is the only One who can do this, who can create new life where NONE existed before…just like in the creation account
He brings order out of chaos
More separating
Heaven/expanse = sky
Review:
Day 1: light (separates day & night)
Day 2: Sky & water (separated)
According to its kind: more separation
Earth brought forth: God speaks and not only creates, but His creation responds…
Why it’s false when people say “I declare, I decree…name it & claim it”…that power only belongs to God
Review:
Day 1: light (separates day & night)
Day 2: Sky & water (separated)
Day 3: land & plants (separates land & sea)
Why not mention the sun & moon?
Original audience had spent 400 years in slavery to Egypt where sun & moon were worshipped…one and only One True God…worship & serve Him only in the land to which you are going…
Why stars only mentioned in passing?
Stars were thought to control human destiny…Israel needed to know that all of these are created by and serve the One True God and His plans and purposes
See the sun & moon “ruling” the day & night…will be a pattern
More separation mentioned
Review:
Day 1: light (separates day & night)
Day 2: Sky & water (separated)
Day 3: land & plants (separates land & sea)
Day 4: sun, moon, and stars (rules the day & night)
Great sea creatures: thought by pagans to rival the creating gods – here Moses shows that in fact the creation serves the Creator
According to their kinds: more separation
Be fruitful & multiply…first time we’ve heard this, will hear it more as we move on and will take on more meaning for humans
Review:
Day 1: light (separates day & night)
Day 2: Sky & water (separated)
Day 3: land & plants (separates land & sea)
Day 4: sun, moon, and stars (rules the day & night)
Day 5: birds & fish (multiply & fill the sky & water)
According to their kinds: more separation
Then: change...separate from the animals…something different is coming…
Image/likeness: will talk more about this in just a minute
Dominion: we get to name & “rule” over the animals in God’s image…as He calls and names…only under His authority though!
Triune God who has always existed in relationship…
Heavy emphasis on God as Creator, man as created…He is the Potter, I am the clay…I am His, He designs His purpose for me…
Created in God’s image:
We are like God as no other creatures are
We can reflect the holy ways of God
We have capacity for relationship & communication with God and other humans
We have capacity for eternal life
After the fall, we retain God’s image structurally (as humans), but not functionally…we are now by nature slaves to sin & unable to mirror God’s holiness in our own power…God CREATES in us again (through Christ!) a right image that will be perfect in heaven
Christ is the only perfect image-bearer (Hebrews 1:1-4…He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature)
In this account so far, we’ve seen lots about separation and the idea that we are made in His image
Different from God (separate)
Self-existent
Self-sustaining
Omnipotent
Sovereign
Determiner of Truth
In His image:
Holy
Relational
Dominion over animals, etc.
Blessed them: what is this blessing?
Fruitfulness & multiplication…later genealogies show God’s faithfulness to fulfill this blessing
Ruling over creation as His representatives (in His image)
Be fruitful & multiply: cultural mandate
Cultural mandate to be fruitful & multiply image-bearers of God
Does this sound familiar? Great Commission: Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…be fruit & multiply image-bearers, those who are in Christ!!
The cultural mandate finds its completion in the Great Commission…
I have given you: provider! In ancient Mesopotamian myths, man was created to supply the gods with food…here, God creates & provides food for man…He is SOVEREIGN and we are DEPENDENT on Him…
Everything was VERY good…each part was good, completed all together it is VERY good…suitable, pleasant, He approves of it completely…He has accomplished His will!
God has richly provided us with everything to enjoy
God’s order in creation…everything completely ready for humanity to enter the scene…God makes everything beautiful in HIS time…
God as central…like the grand finale of fire works
Summary statement…God has perfectly executed His will!
Finished: God finishes what He starts…Phil. 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Seven = completion
He rested: Rest = cease from labor…Why? He does not faint or grow weary…He rests as one who is well-pleased with Himself…sit back and admires…
Setting a pattern for us…our rest acknowledges Him as God alone, the One and only sovereign and sustainer of all things…sit back and think on Him…
Made it holy: holy = sanctify, consecrate, SEPARATE, set apart…giving us a pattern of separating us unto Himself…
The seventh day is the first thing to which God imparts His holiness and sets apart something to Himself…we are to image Him, to imitate Him in this & confess God’s lordship & our submission to Him
Notice that there’s no “and there was evening and there was morning”…it’s separate, it’s different…
SABBATH: the SIGN of the Mosaic covenant…Ex. 31:13 “Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you.”
We are dependent on God for sanctification, not made holy by our works
Original audience would not have experienced this day of rest while in Egypt…Moses making sure that when they enter the Promised Land they do so with a right mind towards who God is…
Rest as Promised Land: the unfaithful & disobedient generation did not enter His rest (Promised Land)…why? Because they didn’t acknowledge Him as God
Rest as picture of future divine rest in Christ: Christ promises rest for our souls if we come to Him…
Power
An area that I struggle in is prayer…pray often for things I can control the outcome of…get bored with prayer…
If I know that God is the God of all power, I can see myself as lacking power, someone who needs to spend time with Him in order to access Him and His power
P: makes my prayer priority, essential, makes me come with a humble heart, grateful that He is also an approachable God…I can pray big prayers because He can speak & make it happen
A: I take on greater care to be obedient and I have deeper gratefulness that He has given me the days that He has…they all belong to Him…I steward my time better…
S: I would season my speech so that it points to His power and sufficiency and not mine…wouldn’t always be trying to make sure everyone knows how great I am…
T: I would be less anxious…knowing that He can speak & make it happen…I don’t have to worry..
Circles of influence: I am free to love knowing that I don’t have to manage every outcome…He has all power
How might my primary relationships be changed? I wouldn’t tiptoe around things or hesitate or grow weary of asking for salvation of family members, etc…He is God of all power
