Editor's Notes
Written to Jewish believers, those who likely gave intellectual ascent to the idea of Christianity but weren’t living it, and those who denied it altogether
They have a thorough knowledge of the Torah, Jewish sacrificial system, etc.
Facing imprisonment & persecution because of their association with Jesus (from Jewish & Gentile leaders)
Christians were being persecuted by the Romans, but the Romans tolerated Judaism…tempted towards apostasy
IMPORTANT THAT THEY KNOW WHO CHRIST IS AND THAT IN HIM THEY HAVE GAINED EVERYTHING
BETTER: not like would you rather be covered in fur or covered in scales
Elevate Jesus as better/superior to all else & challenge readers to remain faithful to Jesus despite persecution
Better than:
Angels (who delivered the law) & torah (the law itself)
Moses & Promised Land
Priests & Melchizedek
Sacrifices & covenant
Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the final authority of all things in heaven & on earth, Jesus the High Priest, Jesus the final sacrifice
When it comes to sin, sin feels natural, safe, familiar, desirable…tempted to think it’s as good as it gets…Hebrews shows that we give up NOTHING by turning loose of the old ways, in fact, we gain something infinitely BETTER (Jen Wilkin)
What we believe about Jesus and who He is determines everything else…the way we encounter the world should be shaped by who God is
Talladega Nights…the Jesus of our preference vs. the One True God
“I like the Christmas, baby Jesus best”…”I like to picture Jesus wearing a tuxedo tshirt, because it says ‘I want to be formal, but I’m here to party’…I like to party so I like my Jesus to party”
All that has come before is a shadow…Christ is the real deal…
Read passage:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purifications for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
At many times: none of the prophets received the whole picture…even this piecemeal character of prophetic revelation reveals is incompleteness
Adam: Messiah should come from the seed of the woman
Abraham: the Messiah will be from his line
Jacob: the Messiah will be of the tribe of Judah
David: the Messiah will be from his house (king)
Micah: the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem
Isaiah: the Messiah will be born of a virgin
Ways God spoke in the past
Gen. 28:10-15 (dreams)
Ex. 3:1-6 (burning bush)
Ex. 20:1-21 (Mt. Sinai…think darkness, thunder, lightning, trumpet, smoking mountain…giving the Law)
Numbers 22:28, 32 (donkey…angel of the Lord)
2 Peter 1:21 (prophets)
Last days: time since the ascension of Christ
Christ is the ultimate Word of God, the final and better revelation
He is the fullness of the Word and superior to the authentic but partial revelation of God in the law
Christ is His Son…Moses, the greatest prophet, was a servant in God’s house; Christ is “over God’s house as a son” (Heb. 3:6)
Jesus is superior to all of the previous ways that He has revealed Himself…better than the prophets of old and better than the angels
An heir held title to the property of the one who appointed him heir
How many things belong to him? ALL THINGS!!
Heir of all things (v. 2)
Has ultimate authority over all things
Is rightful owner of all things
Distortion, greed, worry, jealousy, obsession that happens when I start to reverse the roles…
Time…waking up in the mornings, people as interruptions
Material possessions/money
children
How can I begin to view God as the rightful owner and myself as the faithful steward?
Good news: in Christ, I am a co-heir!!! Have to trust HIM for this…
Created the world: “ages”, including all things and persons (the universe, including all space and ages of time, and all material & spiritual existences)
How much did he create? ALL THINGS!!!
How much have you created?
Present in creation,
Psalm 33:6 By the WORD of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the BREATH of his mouth all their host.
Colossians 1:16-17 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Hebrews 13:8 same yesterday, today, and forever…he has at all times in the past reigned as he does today, and he will reign till the end of the world as he has reigned until now
Radiance of the glory of God (v. 3)
Reflected brightness: of Christ in that He perfectly reflects the majesty of God, but not just as a an object like the moon, as of a light coming from a luminous body…He Himself gives off the light…
We are called to let our lights shine…this is a reflection that does not come from us but from another…not so with Christ…He IS the light…
Rev. 21:23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
Exact imprint of His nature (v. 3)
Imprint: an exact copy, the mark stamped upon that instrument or wrought out on it…the exact expression of any person or thing, marked likeness, precise reproduction in every respect
Engraving of a coin…the image on the coin is precisely the image on the engraving tool…not a general likeness, but an exact duplication of the original
Nature: that which has foundation, is firm, has actual existence, a substance, real being…the substantial quality, nature, of a person or thing
Upholds the universe by the word of His power (v. 3)
Not just once in creation, but still, even now…
How do we compare?
How do we try to be like God in ways that we can’t?
How do we acknowledge that these are true?
Self-sufficient: this is a quality we regard highly in people…but it doesn’t belong to us…when we try to do this, we cut ourselves off from the body of Christ…
Biblical community…
How do we compare?
How do we try to be like God in ways that we can’t?
How do we acknowledge that these are true?
Sovereign: a time when I thought my way was best...infertility…
Made purification for our sins (v. 3)
A cleansing from the guilt of sins wrought by the atoning sacrifice of Christ
Removal & cleansing; removal of penalty for sin and cleaning from all unrighteousness
PRIESTLY ACT
Sitting at the right hand of God (v. 3)
Ascended to heaven
Return to His divine glory
Seated: work of atonement is complete…no place to sit for the priests in the temple
Currently: interceding for us (Romans 8:34) as our Advocate
Issue with addressing Christ’s superiority to angels
Colossians 2:18 & Rev. 22:8-9…people tempted to worship angels instead of Christ/God
Some of the original readers may have wanted to compromise their view of Jesus as God and identify Him as an angel…not ok! God of truth or God of my preference?
The superior nature of Christ is proved from His superior Name…
“having become” is more like “being more excellent”…not made so, but acknowledged to be so…
Another reference to God speaking…angels agents/messengers
Angels in the Bible are often messengers
Jesus is the messenger (Prophet) and the message
Deut. 33:2, Galatians 3:19 (law put in place through angels by an intermediary (Moses))
The manifestation of God by angels at different times in the Old Testament, did not bring man and God into personal union, as the manifestation of God in human flesh does
But, “we got the law from the angels…it must be a pretty big deal then!” Christ is better than the angels, therefore His message is better than theirs…don’t turn back, pay much closer attention to Him and His message…
Christ’s greatness makes obsession with angels unworthy & unnecessary
Philippians 2:5-11
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Used to speak by prophets, but now through Christ, the better prophet
Christ is heir of all things
Christ was agent in creation of all things
Christ is God: radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature
Christ upholds the creation by His word
Christ is better priest & better sacrifice…exaltation
Christ is better not only than the prophets but better also than the angels…the better messenger and the better MESSAGE
Much closer attention…not just “pay attention”…tendency is drift…drift is always away, not towards…
Being at the beach growing up…looking up and being far away from where I started…
What kind of attention do I pay to Christ? To His Word?
Can have no true knowledge of self apart from knowledge of God.
