from Morte D’ Arthur

TALE
 A story about imaginary events

before actually becoming a knight himself

 Adder – harmless but venomous viper
 King Uther Pedrason of England wanted to
marry Igrayne (wife of Duke of Cornwall,
one of his vassals)
 Wizard Merlin help King Uther (disguised as
Igrayne’s husband). As a result, Arthur was
conceived but he was hidden by Sir Ector
(one of his vassals) until the death of the
King
 After the death of King Uther, Arthur became
the King of England after pulling the sword
in a stone (no one can do it except him)
 Arthur’s rein begins with a turmoil (confusion) versus
alliance of 12 northern Kings led by his uncle, King Lot
of Orkeney
 King Arthur marries Guinevere
 Knights of the Round Table was established
 Sir Lancelot (Arthur’s best friend and the best knight)
had a secret affair with Queen Guinevere
 Mordred (Arthur’s illegitimate son) exposes the secret
affair of Lancelot and Guinevere
 Guinevere should be burned to death as the law
dictates but Lancelot rescued her at last minute killing
two knights
 Queen Guinevere was spared and forgiven by King
Arthur; Lancelot flees in France
 Sir Gawain demanded vengeance on Lancelot after
killing his two brothers (Gareth & Gaheris)
 King Arthur and Sir Gawain went to France to fight Sir
Lancelot; Lancelot seriously wounded Sir Gawain but
refuses to kill him
 On the other hand, Mordred leads a rebellion in England
againts King Arthur, claiming the throne and Queen
Guinevere (who fled to London)
 Arthur returns to England to defend his throne and his
queen
 Arthur and Mordred first battle at Dover; Gawain
was fatally wounded
 Before Gawain’s death, he sent a letter to Sir
Lancelot ending their feud and asking him to help
Arthur
 Arthur regroups his men and moves to westward,
towards Salisbury
 Arthur and Mordred agreed to fight on a Monday
after Trinity Sunday (8th Sunday after Easter)
 On the night a Trinity Sunday, Arthur dreamed of a
platform chair put in a wheel were he was seated
with his richest clothe of gold. On the bottom, was
deep black water with serpents, worms, wild
beast.
 Sir Gawain appeared before Arthur with beautiful
ladies warning Arthur not to fight Mordred
tomorrow, but after a month because Lancelot will
help him
 Sir Bedivere the Bold, Sir Lucan the Batler with
two bishops went to Mordred for an agreement
 Mordred and Arthur should meet with 14
knights each to discuss, agreed their
arrangement (no sword should be drawn)
 An adder came out from a little heathbush and
stung a knight (the knight drew his sword to kill
the adder, which causes commotion to both
parties—start of war, nonstop bloodshed)
 Only three remains (Arthur, Sir Lucan and
Bedivere-who are full sore wounded)
“Jesu, mery,” said the king, “where are
all my noble knights become? Alas
that ever i should see this doleful day!
Foe now,” said King Arthur. “I am
come to mine end. But would to God.”
Said he, “that I wist now where were
that traitor Sir Mordred that has
caused all this mischief.”
 Arthur saw Mordred in a pile of dead bodies “Now
give me my spear...for yonder I have espied the
traitor that this woe hath wrought.”
 Sir Lucan forbids him and warning him about his
dream
 “Now, befall me death, tide me life...now i see him
yonder alone, he shall never escape mine hands...
 Arthur get his spear and ran toward Mordred
“Traitor. Now is thy deathday come!”
 Mordred ran also with his word
 Arthur smote Mordred under the shield; Mordred
smote his father with his sword with two hands
upon the side of the head, the sword pierced the
helmet and the casting of the brain.
 Sir Mordred dashed down stark dead on earth.
 Sir Lucan & Bedivere helped Arthur to a nearby
chapel along the seaside
 They heard loud cry in the battle field and Lucan
reported that the noise are pillagers and robbers
 Arthur, Lucan and Bedivere went on to look for
a town away from that place. However, when
they help Arthur lift, Lucan fell and died
“Alas...this is to me a full heavy sight to see this
noble duke so die for my sake, for he would
have helped me that had more need of help
than I. Alas that he would not complain him for
his heart was so set to help me. Now Jesu
have mercy upon his soul.”
 Arthur instructed Bedivere to take the Excalibur
(sword of King Arthur) and throw it to the water
 Bedivere said yes but “If I throw this rich sword
in the water, thereof shall never come good,
but harm and loss.” He then hid the Excalibur
under a tree
 What did you see? I saw nothing but waves
and winds
 “Ah, traitor unto me and untrue.” -KArthur
 Bedivere threw the sword and he saw an arm and
a hand above the water and took it and clutched it,
and shook it thrice and brandished
 Perfect! Now carry me that waterside. When they
are there, a barge (boat) floated with many fair
ladies (some are queen) weeping when they saw
King Arthur
 Bedivere help Arthur to be in the barge and ladies
does not stop crying “Ah, my dear brother, why
have ye tarried so long from me?...
 “Ah, my Lord Arthur, what shall become of me,
now you go from me and leave me here alone
among my enemies?” – Bedivere
 “Comfort yourself...and do as well you may, for
in me is no trust in. For I must into legendary
valley to heal me of my grievous wound. And If
you hear nevermore of me, pray for my soul.” -
Arthur
 In the next morning, Bedivere went to a chapel
were he found a hermit closing a newly dug
tomb. A dead corpse was delivered at midnight
by a number of ladies and offered him hundred
of tapers and thousand of gold coins.
 “Alas...that was my Lord King Arthur and joined
the hermit in prayer and fasting and told the
hermit what happened
