How much you know about King Arthur

One Stop English /teacher’s notes
• Aims:
• In this lesson the students will:
• 1. learn about the legend of King Arthur;
• 2. practise extensive and intensive listening and a range of listening sub-
skills, including listening for specific information and listening for detail;
• 3. practise decision-making in groups by choosing the outcome of the
story as it unfolds;
• 4. learn a range of language related to myths, magic and fantasy - knight,
demon, quest, battlefield, magic, dragon, monster, spell (n), sorceress,
disguise;
• 5. consolidate some of the above language in a final puzzle task.
• Materials: one copy of Worksheet 1 and 2 per student; nine audio
tracks - all downloaded from onestopenglish. See audio map for track
details.
• Summary: Join time traveller Amber Adams on a thrilling quest as she
is summoned back in time by Merlin to help Sir Lancelot return
Excalibur to Camelot Castle and King Arthur. Will Amber escape the
dragon and the evil sorceress Morgana?
Important note to teacher:
• Knights of the Round Table is a listening maze where your students
will have to make some important decisions that will lead on to
different listening passages. The total audio time is 20 minutes, but
students will not listen to all of the tracks. The audio is broken up by
two decisions and a final vocabulary puzzle. See the audio map below
which outlines the route and where each decision takes place. Make
sure you read the following teacher’s notes and answer keys to know
exactly when each decision occurs.
Reading task
• Aim: to introduce students to King Arthur and the background context
of the listening
KING ARTHUR
• There are many stories in England about King Arthur, who fought
against the Anglo-Saxons. No one knows if King Arthur ever really
lived, but he is important in a lot of English art, music and literature.
One famous story about Arthur is the story of the sword in the stone.
Arthur was the son of King Uther, but these were dangerous times in
England, and Arthur’s family wanted to keep him safe. So when
Arthur was a baby, he was taken to live with another family, who took
care of him along with their own son Kay. When King Uther died, no
one knew that he had a son. The important people in England did not
know who should be the next king. But then they saw a strange white
stone with a sword in it. Gold writing on the stone said, ‘The man
who can pull out this sword will be King.’ Many men tried to pull out
the sword, but no one could move it. One day Arthur, who was
looking for a sword for Kay, pulled it out. Then everyone knew he was
the next king.
Vocabulary task
• Aims: to focus on language related to myths, magic and fantasy; to
establish the different characters in the story
• 1. Direct your students to the language in the box, then ask them to
match the words to their definitions. All the definitions are taken
from macmillandictionary.com. Feedback on the answers as a group.
Key: 1. quest; 2. dragon; 3. sorceress; 4. magic; 5. cast a spell; 6.
disguise; 7. knight; 8. monster; 9. demon; 10. battlefield
• 2. Ask your students to read the passage titled ‘Your quest’. Then
explain that the students are going to listen to the first part of the
audio. Tell your students that they need to listen out for clues to help
them make decisions. Make sure your students are ready to listen!
Your quest
• Are you ready for an adventure to help save King Arthur?
• You will decide what happens in this story! Listen as Amber joins
Merlin and Sir Lancelot on a quest to return King Arthur’s sword to
him and save him from Morgana, the evil sorceress. Make sure you
listen very carefully as there will be clues on your journey. One
mistake could end in death!

You are going to listen to the first part of the
audio.
Listen out for clues to help them make decisions.

Decision 1

• What has happened to King Arthur?
• What is Excalibur?
• Where are Amber and Sir Lancelot going?
• 2. You need to decide whether to take the caves or the bridge.
• 3. Explain that each group must come to a consensus and explain
exactly why they have come to their decision. Give the groups five
minutes to come to a decision.
• Note:
• It doesn’t matter if you take the caves or the bridge. The stories are
practically the same with only minor details changed.
• However, that it is a life and death decision to make it more exciting!
• 4. Finish up with a class vote of hands for the caves or the bridge.
Decision 2
• 1. If the class choose the caves, play Track 2 (Caves).
• If the class choose the bridge, play Track 5 (Bridge).
At the end of Track 2 or Track 5
• make Your second decision.

• ARE YOU READY TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE?
• You will have to fill in the puzzle as quickly as you can to reveal the
hidden word in the red boxes.
• Switch on your microphone and say the word, if you have finished
• Look at the puzzle, but don’t do it now, you do it during listening to
the next part of the story

King arthur listening lesson

  • 1. England: Knights of the Round Table Level: Pre-intermediate / Intermediate Age: Teenagers / Young adults Duration: Approx. 60 minutes

One Stop English /teacher’s notes • Aims: • In this lesson the students will: • 1. learn about the legend of King Arthur; • 2. practise extensive and intensive listening and a range of listening sub- skills, including listening for specific information and listening for detail; • 3. practise decision-making in groups by choosing the outcome of the story as it unfolds; • 4. learn a range of language related to myths, magic and fantasy - knight, demon, quest, battlefield, magic, dragon, monster, spell (n), sorceress, disguise; • 5. consolidate some of the above language in a final puzzle task.
  • 4. • Materials: one copy of Worksheet 1 and 2 per student; nine audio tracks - all downloaded from onestopenglish. See audio map for track details. • Summary: Join time traveller Amber Adams on a thrilling quest as she is summoned back in time by Merlin to help Sir Lancelot return Excalibur to Camelot Castle and King Arthur. Will Amber escape the dragon and the evil sorceress Morgana?
  • 5. Important note to teacher: • Knights of the Round Table is a listening maze where your students will have to make some important decisions that will lead on to different listening passages. The total audio time is 20 minutes, but students will not listen to all of the tracks. The audio is broken up by two decisions and a final vocabulary puzzle. See the audio map below which outlines the route and where each decision takes place. Make sure you read the following teacher’s notes and answer keys to know exactly when each decision occurs.

  • 7. Reading task • Aim: to introduce students to King Arthur and the background context of the listening

  • 9. KING ARTHUR • There are many stories in England about King Arthur, who fought against the Anglo-Saxons. No one knows if King Arthur ever really lived, but he is important in a lot of English art, music and literature. One famous story about Arthur is the story of the sword in the stone. Arthur was the son of King Uther, but these were dangerous times in England, and Arthur’s family wanted to keep him safe. So when Arthur was a baby, he was taken to live with another family, who took care of him along with their own son Kay. When King Uther died, no one knew that he had a son. The important people in England did not know who should be the next king. But then they saw a strange white stone with a sword in it. Gold writing on the stone said, ‘The man who can pull out this sword will be King.’ Many men tried to pull out the sword, but no one could move it. One day Arthur, who was looking for a sword for Kay, pulled it out. Then everyone knew he was the next king.
  • 10. Vocabulary task • Aims: to focus on language related to myths, magic and fantasy; to establish the different characters in the story • 1. Direct your students to the language in the box, then ask them to match the words to their definitions. All the definitions are taken from macmillandictionary.com. Feedback on the answers as a group. Key: 1. quest; 2. dragon; 3. sorceress; 4. magic; 5. cast a spell; 6. disguise; 7. knight; 8. monster; 9. demon; 10. battlefield

  • 12. • 2. Ask your students to read the passage titled ‘Your quest’. Then explain that the students are going to listen to the first part of the audio. Tell your students that they need to listen out for clues to help them make decisions. Make sure your students are ready to listen!
  • 13. Your quest • Are you ready for an adventure to help save King Arthur? • You will decide what happens in this story! Listen as Amber joins Merlin and Sir Lancelot on a quest to return King Arthur’s sword to him and save him from Morgana, the evil sorceress. Make sure you listen very carefully as there will be clues on your journey. One mistake could end in death!
  • 14. QUEST You are going to listen to the first part of the audio. Listen out for clues to help them make decisions. Ready to listen??
  • 15. Decision 1 • audio1 • Which characters appear in this part? • What has happened to King Arthur? • What is Excalibur? • Where are Amber and Sir Lancelot going?
  • 16. • 2. You need to decide whether to take the caves or the bridge.
  • 17. • 3. Explain that each group must come to a consensus and explain exactly why they have come to their decision. Give the groups five minutes to come to a decision.
  • 18. • Note: • It doesn’t matter if you take the caves or the bridge. The stories are practically the same with only minor details changed. • However, that it is a life and death decision to make it more exciting!
  • 19. • 4. Finish up with a class vote of hands for the caves or the bridge.
  • 20. Decision 2 • 1. If the class choose the caves, play Track 2 (Caves). • If the class choose the bridge, play Track 5 (Bridge).
  • 21. At the end of Track 2 or Track 5 • make Your second decision. which Merlin is the real Merlin – Merlin 1 or Merlin 2 ?

I will show it to you, when King Arthur says • ARE YOU READY TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE? • You will have to fill in the puzzle as quickly as you can to reveal the hidden word in the red boxes. • Switch on your microphone and say the word, if you have finished • Look at the puzzle, but don’t do it now, you do it during listening to the next part of the story
