G321 Preliminary Task Evaluation
Name: Amy Clarke

Write about the preliminary task. What were you asked to do? How did you find
each stage of the process?
We were made to do a continuity task. We had to film a short scene of someone walking
down a corridor into a room and having a conversation, however while filming this we
had to make sure we followed the shot reverse shot rule, the 180° rule and the match on
action rule. The filming process was pretty simple however the harder bit was to make
sure the actors were doing the same thing each time we filmed it, for example opening
the door with the same hand each time. The editing stage was a bit harder than the
filming this was because we had to make sure that every shot that was being included in
the editing was edited so that the following shot fit exactly. It was also hard to get the
sound from each shot to match when editing.
Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task:
We had to follow the 180 ° rule meaning that when we filmed we had to stay on one side
of the person in order for the scene to look right when editing it. The next rule was the
shot reverse shot rule which was where we had to film over one person’s shoulder and
the film over the next persons shoulder showing the two people having a conversation.
The final rule was the match on action rule meaning that when we edited the shots had
to fit together exactly so that the scene flowed.
List three things that went well during the filming/editing process:
 Making sure that the actors were being consistant (using the same hand to open
the door and pull out a chair and making sure they are saying the same thing
each time.)
 The filming went well as the camera was steady and all the actors followed
instructions.
 The second time editing went well, all the shots followed the match on action
rule.
List three things you think could have been improved in these stages:
 Making sure there was no sound in the background while filming as when filming
there were some drilling sounds in the background.
 I lost the footage when I first started editing.
 When filming the shot reverse shot of the two actors having a conversation I
could have moved the camera slightly so that you could see more of the persons
head that was facing the camera than the persons head who wasn’t.
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for you 2-minute film opening? If so,
what? If not – think, then say 
After doing the preliminary task I know that for my 2 minute film opening I will have to
take more than one shot of a certain scene so that I have many to use and choose from
in case one of them is wrong. I also know not to make my film opening too complicated
as it makes it more difficult to edit.
