THE EVOLUTION OF NORTH CAROLINA
CENTRAL UNIVERSITY
HISTORY OF NCCU
 North Carolina Central University was
founded in 1909 as the National Religious
Training School and Chautauqua by Dr.
James Edward Shepard. It became the first
public liberal arts institution for African
Americans in the nation. The University is
now a master’s comprehensive institution
that offers bachelors and master’s degrees, a
Juris Doctor, and a Ph.D. in Integrated
Biosciences
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
 1939-The college offered it’s first graduate-level
courses in the arts and sciences
 1940-The college established the School of
Law
 1941-The college established the School of
Education
 1986-The college established the
Biotechnology Research Institute
Lack of Cultural Diversity
High freshman retention
rates
Low 4-year graduation
rates
Lack of student access to
adequate technology, ie:
computers, printers, copiers
and faxes
Lack of technological
educational opportunities,
ie: distant learning , online
courses and online degree
and certificate programs
ASSESSMENT OF SETBACKS
NCCU can evolve its
current level of education
by integrating
Learning Technologies
in an effort to change the
landscape of student
learning
Social Media
Technologies in an
attempt to reach out to a
more diverse population of
students
Internet Technologies to
expand the ways in which
learning is achieved and
materials are presented in
this technological era
VISION FOR NCCU: EVOLUTION
Organizational scanning
should be inclusive of all
social, economic, political,
and technological advances
or setbacks that would be
significant indicators of
change for the
organization.
It is very vital that both
observational and
research-based data be
used when scanning for a
more accurate depiction of
the current environment
VISION OF NCCU: FUTURING
 How to Plan for the Future
of NCCU??????
PROS CONS
 Futuring techniques could be
used to assist the university in
diversifying their population.
 Students apply for college online,
choose college courses online,
purchase electronic books,
perform research online and
submit assignments solely for
convenience for the university
now so online courses would be
a natural progression.
 Enrollment could grow and be
extended worldwide
 The university may lose the
historical value and traditional
feel.
 Campus may become inevitably
obsolete
 The university may not be
technologically adept to keep up
with the demands of online
 The cost of training and
technology for instructors would
increase significantly
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE OF FUTURING FOR
NCCU
MIND MAP
Must embrace
the future of
education
Education is
becoming more
accessible to all.
The effectiveness
of education is
reshaping ot meet
the needs of
this era.
Transforming-the
shape of
education is
transforming
with technology
Education is
Motivation
Education
Is expanding
horizons
As technological
advances grow
& expand so
should education
Education is
Increasing Potential
What is Learning?
Future Vision of the University
 Social Media technologies are also currently being used
by the university. The university uses popular sites
such as Twitter and Facebook to keep students abreast
of university events, job fairs, deadlines and university
wide news. This service and the way the university
uses this service is very appropriate and effective for all
students but primarily the students that reside off
campus and are unaware of activities that are held on
the school's campus. The use of Social Media by the
university, not only enlarges the universities capacity to
connect with students but it allows for students that are
unable to physically connect in a campus setting
connect virtually.
Future Vision of the University
 The university is using learning technologies to
assist students in their learning process. The
university and professors within the university
use the popular site Blackboard, to post
discussions, assignments, syllabus and due
dates. However, the use of Blackboard is
essentially the extent of the learning
technologies used by the University. In an era
in which, online learning is increasing using
more learning technologies to cater to the
needs and schedules of students.
Future Vision of the University
 The overall vision for North Carolina
Central University in the future will be to
have the duality of both online and on-campus
learning; in essence online
learning with an on-campus feel to it, in
which the lectures are streamed for
distant learners.
Future Vision of Education
Opportunities
North Carolina
Central will grow
to meet the needs
of distance
leaner's.
North Carolina Central
University would
become a contender
alongside schools within
the NC University
system currently
offering online
education.
By taking a dual stance
and streaming lectures
teachers will not have to
adjust their current
teaching styles to
accommodate the
change.
As enrollment
increases, the
finances that the
school brings in will
increase as well.
By taking the initial step
of dual learning
education will be the
gateway to shift into
more online education
options.
Future Vision of Education
Challenges
The initial cost of
technology to assure
adequate network and
devices are in place to
stream lectures.
Teachers being able to
keep up with the
demands of larger
classroom sizes due to
on-campus and distant
learners.
Transitioning tenured
traditional teachers into
a technological stage.
Training requirements
and expenses to assure
that teachers are
adequately prepared.
The possibility of on-campus
decrease due to
distance learning
increase.
Future Vision of Education
Plan For Change
 Projections Budget
 Staff Survey
 Student Survey
 Partner with school in
NC University System
 Purchase Technology
 Begin Pilot Program
 Assess Pilot Program
for foreseeable
obstacles
 Begin initiate
program in programs
Future Vision of Education
Call for Action
 The first step the university needs to do is the
projection budget. This must be done as the
first step to determine the feasibility of the
program for the university. The university
should begin on this as soon as possible and
partner with another school within the NC
University Systems in an effort to do so. Once
the financial feasibility is determined, the
university should then begin to acquire the
technology necessary to begin to launch the
pilot program.
