Open Education and Widening ParticipationOEPScotland
This document discusses opening educational practices in Scotland through the use of open educational resources (OERs). It defines OERs as educational materials that are freely available under open licenses allowing them to be legally copied, used, adapted and redistributed. The key principles for using OERs are the 5Rs - retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute. The project aims to analyze current open practices, raise awareness of OERs, develop an online hub for sharing best practices, create new OERs, offer badges for informal learning, and research models to evaluate economic impact and widening participation. Barriers to adoption include issues around scale/complexity, individual vs collective learning, negative prior experiences, lack of structure/

Increasing OER Adoptions with the Community College Consortium for OERUna Daly
During the past few years, adoptions of open textbooks at community colleges have increased. A key component in many community college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their successful strategies and tactics for creating a community of practice nationally as well as locally.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 200 member colleges in 17 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at their monthly online advisory meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through the CCCOER listserve makes it easier for new members to find and adopt the highest quality OER available in their disciplines.
Monthly webinars featuring OER leaders at community colleges, universities, and educational organizations around the world keep the community informed of new research findings, OER projects, and open policies. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues throughout higher education.
Why Should You Care About Open Educational Resources?Una Daly
The document discusses the benefits of open educational resources (OER) for students, faculty, and taxpayers. It outlines current and future funding opportunities for colleges to adopt OER through incentive grants from the California College Textbook Affordability Act and the Achieving the Dream OER Degree Initiative. The document also summarizes California's proposed 2016-17 state budget that includes $5 million to create "zero-textbook-cost degrees" using open educational resources at community colleges.
The Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project aims to facilitate best practices in open education through developing a peer support network and online hub. It seeks to enhance Scotland's capacity and reputation in developing openly available online materials supported by strong pedagogy and learning technology. Originating from partnerships between the Open University in Scotland and other organizations, the project addresses the promise and challenges of open educational resources (OER) by combining open and adult education practices to widen participation. Emerging themes include partnership, embedding practice in learning networks, and designing the online hub to support communities rather than just hosting content. Examples provided demonstrate developing new content and practices through various sector partnerships.

Finding Open Textbooks and CA State OER InitiativeUna Daly
Presented by Una Daly, Community College Outreach Director, at the Mid-Pacific ICT 2013 Conference in San Francisco January 3rd.
The state of California recently adopted legislation to develop open textbooks for the 50 highest enrolled college classes and store them in a statewide repository. The goal of the legislation is expanding access to education by saving students thousands of dollars each year in textbook costs. A key component of this equation is the adoption of open textbooks by the faculty and staff who support students and their learning.
Come to this session to learn more about finding, selecting, and adopting open textbooks and OER to enhance student learning. Case studies from the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources will be shared and an invitation to join their open and collaborative Advisory Board will be extended

Slides from the ACRL 2021 conference panel presentation "Open access investment at the local level: Sharing diverse tactics to improve access and affordability."
Panelists include:
- Sam Teplitzky, Open Science Librarian, UC Berkeley
- Timothy Vollmer, Scholarly Communication & Copyright Librarian, UC Berkeley
- Sharla Lair, Senior Strategist, Open Access & Scholarly Communication Initiatives at LYRASIS
- Tom Narock, Assistant Professor of Data Science at Goucher College
- Justin Gonder, Senior Product Manager, Publishing, California Digital Library.
Panel topic:
Improving accessibility, inclusivity, and affordability of scholarship is a central tenet to realizing a more equitable higher education system. Many decisions about open access investments take place at administrative or consortial levels, but librarians frequently field requests for access, resources, or partnerships at the local level through their relationships with students, researchers, and faculty. An open access investment working group was established at UC Berkeley Library in late 2019 to bridge this gap between larger scale strategic investment and local decision making. The group proposed a set of criteria to guide library investments in sustainable open access projects. With this group’s work in the foreground, the panel will share real-world examples of where and how academic libraries decide to invest in open access resources. Panelists will discuss commonalities and differences in strategies and give attendees examples they can apply in their own roles.
