By doing that, he confronted them with their irrational beliefs. This allowed him to be himself
(Albert Ellis Institution, 2014). REBT is directed towards having people live and lead happier
lives. It was formally known as Rational Therapy. To better understand REBT, Ellis used the
ABC model (Farley, 2009). A, an activating event that one does not like; B, one s belief about A;
C, the consequence, in which one might experience healthy emotions and behavior or unhealthy
emotions and self defeating behavior, depending on whether one s beliefs are rational or
irrational. People often blame A as the cause of C, but B is to blame (Farley, 2009, Pg 216 ,
Paragraph 2). In 1957 Ellis published his first book on REBT, How to Live with a Neurotic.
Shortly after, he came up with the Institute for Rational Living, a non profit organization. He began
holding workshops at the institution to teach other therapist his principles. Ellis was a very
effective writer having published 54 books and over 600 articles on REBT, sex and marriage by
1959 (Albert Ellis Institution.

Homelessness in America has been a considered a serious social problem for at least thirty to forty
years, affecting thousands upon thousands of people in all regions of the country. The individuals
and families that make up the homeless population face struggles every day that many of us may
never even experience in our entire lives. There are many factors that either contribute to or directly
cause homelessness. Unfortunately, many people in our society believe that homelessness is a
personal problem and should be up to the individual to fix. However, homelessness is actually a
very serious social problem that we all need to be concerned about and work together to bring it

and other material goods. Power, wealth, and prestige seem to be the only things that many
people want to live for, and those people do not attempt to put themselves in other peoples shoes,

part of our society for so long that a lot of people do not even see the problem with it. They may
not even realize how wrong and terrible it is to label someone just by their looks or their life
situation. But since we have done it for hundreds of years, we all continue to do it and see no
