Cause Of The 1929 Stock Market Crash
In late October of 1929, the U.S. stock market crashed, setting our nation into the Great Depression.
In an attempt to reveal the true catalysts of the event, the book Causes of the 1929 Stock Market
Crash examines popular beliefs of what really caused the economic tragedy. The nine questionable
causes that are discussed in this book are that the stock marketwas too high in September of 1929
due to excessive speculation (Bierman 32), there was a downturn in business activity, the Hatry
affair, the Federal Reserve Board s actions, a message that there was a war against speculators,
excessive buying on margin and of investment stocks, excessive leverage in terms of debt, a
competitively priced utility market segment paired with a setback in the public utilitymarket, and an
overreaction by the stockmarket.
Bierman argues that the overall stock market was not excessively high in September of 1929 and
he even explains that the business outlook was favorable. Therefore, the crash did not occur
because the market was too high. However, at least one section of the market (public utilities) was
too high and too levered, and the stage was set for the selling panic by the press and the
governmental officials repeatedly speaking of an orgy of speculation.
After disproving common beliefs about the stock market crash, he continues to explain the actual
causes.
The next false cause is the Hatry case, which Bierman refers to as a tragedy . It involved an

Purpose Of Thriller
The goal of Michael Jackson s Thriller music video is to leave the audience confused and
somewhat scared. Thriller was a song that came out on November thirtieth, nineteen eighty two,
sung by Michael Jackson. The music video is approximately fourteen minutes long, while the
song is only about five minutes long. There is a very long storyline that comes with the video
almost as if you are watching a short film. The video starts off with Michael and a young lady
driving around in the middle of the night when suddenly the car runs out of gas. They get out of
the car and start walking. Michael then asks the lady if she would be his girl. She of course says
yes and then he tells her that he is different from other guys. He then transforms... Show more

The viewers of the music video are then relieved when we see that everything that was going on
was just a movie that Michael and his girlfriend had been watching at the movie theater. His
girlfriend was not pleased with the movie because it was too scary for her so she decides to walk
out of the movie. Michael follows her outside and the song finally begins. He teases her because
she thought the movie was scary. He then starts singing to her about how something evil is
lurking through the dark, perhaps to tease her some more and make her more afraid of the dark
since she is still shaken up from the movie. She seems to not be frightened when Michael starts
teasing her by singing. She is just walking next to him and smiling, which does not make any
sense to me because it looked like he was trying to scare her. After Michael has sung for a while
about how there is stuff coming to get her and paralyze her, corpses start rising from their graves.
Later on, the corpses turn Michael into a zombie and the iconic Thriller dance begins as he dances
with the other zombies. His girlfriend runs into a house and shuts the door behind her to hide from
the zombies. Eventually the zombies, including Michael, break into the house. They almost reach

Essay about Women s Prostitution and the Criminal Justice...
In the following assignment, it is my intention to produce a research report, examining women
involved in street prostitution and how they end up entering the criminal justice system. Within the
report I will look at three pieces of research, review their main findings, the type of research that
was used, and look to identify where I believe further research is required.
My reason for choosing women in the criminal justice system is that I have expressed an interest in
the criminal justice setting and my elective module is in this area. Anything that I learn from
undertaking this assignment will aid my understanding and increase my knowledge base when
undertaking my second placement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women involved in street prostitution are subjected to routine violence and in the last 7 years, there
have been unresolved murders and suspicious deaths, (Women s Support Project 2001).
Historically, policing practices have been heavy handed and local government has sought to limit
the spread of indoor prostitution. This is in contrast to the population of indoor prostitution in
Edinburgh, which is approximately (90%) with only around 50 women involved in street
prostitution, the proportion of intravenous drug users is also reportedly lower (Mackay, F Schaap,
A 2000).
In England and Wales between 1989 and 1995 there were 1,700 convictions of young people
under 18 for offences relating to prostitution with a further 2,300 cautions issued. It was within this
same period that there was a 40% increase in the number of recorded cases, which involved
children aged 16 or under, (Mackay, F Schaap, A 2000). This has lead to the publication of national
guidelines on the safeguarding of children involved in street prostitution in England and Wales
(Department of Health, 2000).
Over the years there has been more and more research carried out in relation to the issues
surrounding street prostitution, with the government trying to identify areas

A New Methodology For Monitoring Using Smartphones Essay
Recent studies have attempted to automate monitoring progress of construction projects. Typical
practice for progress tracking mostly depends on supervisors daily or weekly reports, which
requires Intensive manual data collection. This paper presents a new methodology for monitoring
using smartphones. This is done by proposing newly developed applications called BIM Track
and BIM Phase using Building Information Modelling. Building Information Models usage
rapidly enlarged in the past years. BIM track is an android application that the end user can use to
update the activities progress from a remote location. This data is used to update the project s 5D
model enhanced with different cost parameters such as earned value and planned value. BIM Phase
application is a mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application that is utilized during construction
phase through implementing a 4D model integrated with an augmented 5D video. This video
presents the 5D model updated from the BIM Track . A case study is presented to demonstrate the
uses of the proposed application to track construction projects. Introduction Nowadays, Mobile hand
held devices are being used massively in different applications. Portability and accessibility granted
the mobile hand held devices such as smartphones and computer tablets a great advantage that
attempt recent studies to automate the process of construction site monitoring. Developing a BIM
model for a project contributes to projects success

William Bradford Vs John Smith Essay
In the early 1509 s 1850 s there were two Englishmen named John Smith and William Bradford that
established in the colonies of British who came to the New World to share a common culture. These
two men wrote journals, talking about what had happened to them in the past months and what they
went through. Although they struggled and faced many challenges they did their best in order for
them to survive for example, they had starvation times and although they would starve he would do
his best. Bradford and Smith presented different accounts of the life on land and talked about an
ideal vision of what the new land could be with the best of people colonizing the new land. Both
wrote of their experience in America, were Europeans, and desired to settle the land. However, the
similarities end there while Smith roamed Virginia as a scout and a military man, Bradford planted

Perez needed to consider what spring shots to give her mare, Clementine. Her previous
veterinarian had retired, selling his practice to Dr. Hou. Ms. Perez was particularly
apprehensive with the West Nile vaccine, because Clementine had experienced severe reactions
to both brands currently on the market. The first vaccine caused the mare to colic and the
second vaccine caused neurological symptoms. After the mare s reaction to the second vaccine,
the mare s previous veterinarian administered medications to counteract the reaction. He
recorded the mare s reactions and treatments to both of the vaccines in his records, which
remained at the clinic when he sold his practice to Dr. Hou. He suggested taking preventative
measures to minimize any allergic reactions. He informed Ms. Perez about a third vaccine that
was in development, in which he was optimistic about because it seemed to produce far fewer
reactions. Once Dr. Hou took over the veterinary practice, Ms. Perez called Dr. Hou s office to
set up an appointment. After futile attempts to speak with the veterinarian, Dr. Hou s
receptionist agreed to pass on Ms. Perez s message to Dr. Hou, requesting that he bring the
newly developed vaccine. Several weeks later, Dr. Hou arrived at Ms. Perez s barn for a
consultation. After frequent requests to pull Clementine s patient records, Dr. Hou finally agreed
and promised to call Ms. Perez with preventative steps. He also agreed to order the new

Persuasive Essay On Year Round School
As a student who use to attend a year round school, all schools should become year round. Year
round education will be an improvement for students who have never been in a year round school.
There are roughly 3,000 schools enrolled to Year Round Education and more than 2 millions
students in those Year Round schools in the United States. Year Round schooling would help
students cut down on the amount of stress they develop throughout the year. When having a long 3
month summer break you will forget a lot of information that teachers had taught; but if you was to
go to schoolfor 9 weeks and get out for 3 weeks to come back to school and start the next 9 weeks
of school. More counties should have year round schoolto prevent students from dropping out. It is

Stress is one of the main reason why students who go to traditional schools drop out or just don t
come back to school. Traditional school students drop out and never want to finish school because
of how stress they are. Year round students are not really stressed because they have that three
weeks out of school after the nine weeks unlike traditional schools.
Traditional schools make kids very stressed out and that s what makes the dropout rates goes up
so bad. Students can t handle all the work they have to do and they still have things to do outside
of school. Students that are in year round schools they never are stressed out as much as students
that are in traditional school are. When year round students get out of school for the three weeks

Racism In Cry, The Beloved Country, And Toni Morrison s...
Racism has been a part of the world s landscape for centuries. Despite the progress of society,
inequality has still manifested its way into today s population. The detrimental effects of racism are
not limited to simply the survivors themselves; they continue to influence the lives of families for
future generations. Inequality has a lasting legacy. This idea is represented well in Cry, the Beloved
Country by Alan Paton, and Toni Morrisons Beloved. Each novel examines the legacy of inequality,
and racism haunts each novels characters. The destruction of identity, the backdrop of social
injustice, and separation of families can all be displayed in both texts.
In Cry, the Beloved Country and Beloved it can be seen that Inequality employs a lasting legacy
through the destruction of identity. To start, Paton shows how Johannesburgs system of apartheid
shatters the morals and values of citizens. When in Johannesburg, powerful white men use the land
to solely their own benefit. The tribal system of African natives is ravaged and replaced with
homelessness, violence, fear, and poverty. Paton summarizes this when he states Our natives today
produce criminals and prostitutes and drunkards, not because it is their nature to do so, but because
their system of order and tradition has been destroyed. It was destroyed by the impact of our own
civilization (Paton 146). The injustices faced by generations past are continuing to affect
Johannesburg s current citizens. This is

Rise Of The Counterculture
During the sixties, American people saw the rise of the counterculture. Counterculture was a group
of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, mainly embraced by the
decade s young adults. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the
counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society as a whole. As a result of the
achievements the counterculture movements had made, the United Statesin the 1960sbecame a
more open, more tolerant, and a more freer country. In 1969, close to half a million self
described hippies, peace makers, and Aquarians made an expedition from mainly San Francisco to
Woodstock in upstate New York. The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was called an Aquarian
Exposition and hailed as three days of peace and music, over 400,000 people attended; it was
peaceful. However, life outside of the woodstock festivalwas not. America seemed to be dividing
as a country. The war in Vietnam went on for roughly another 15 years. American boys were still
being sent to Southeast Asia by the newly elected President, Nixon. The increasingly unpopular
war intensified a campus protest movement. Burning draft cards and peace marches became daily
fare on the evening news. And not all of the demonstrations were peaceful. The summer after
Martin Luther King was assassinated, riots broke out in 125 cities including, Chicago, Baltimore,
NYC, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, at the Democratic convention in Chicago, the anti
war movement tore the Democratic Party in two. Both critics and fans agree that Woodstock has
become part of the mythology of the 1960s, even if the actual event didn t necessarily represent
the musical or political taste of most of the young Americans adults at this time. Some say it
symbolized the freedom and idealism of the 1960s. Some argue that Woodstock represented much
of everything that was wrong with the sixties: a glorification of drugs, a loosening of sexual
morality and a socially corrosive disrespect for authority.
The 60s was full of major movements. One of the most powerful counterculture movements was the
civil rights movement. In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act to end racial discrimination in

Galveston Island Case Study
Introduction Galveston Island is rich in history and has population history that archeologist
have dated back to Native Americans. It was settled by Europeans and established as a port for
the Republic of Mexico. It was rich in immigration and dominated trade. It has a history of
turmoil caused by war and natural disasters. Galveston Island formed as a typical barrier island.
Galveston s formation took place 5000 years ago, as wind and wave energy along with rising sea
water levels moved sand around to form the island. The wave and wind energy is indicative of
storm surge often caused by hurricane interaction. The building up of Galveston Island continued
until 3000 years ago. The coastal shoreline continues to change and those changes appear to be
happening more rapidly than once believed. There are several things that impact the changing
shoreline of Galveston Island including; changes in sea level, subsidence, erosion, and destruction
of coastal protections like dunes, marshes, and wetlands, all of which are highly impacted by
powerful storms and hurricanes. Discussion... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the sea level rises, this can be due to multiple factors including climate change and
subsidence. Climate change and warming reports identify that postglacial temperature has
increased 13В°F in the Gulf region (Morton 22). This is important evidence because rising
temperatures coincide with rising sea levels. As sea water warms, it expands and takes up more
room causing sea levels to rise. Additionally, melting glacial ice cause the rise of sea level and is
due to climate warming as

He was loyal to the dwarves throughout their journey. Bilbo did not leave them, even when he
had the opportunities and the rights to go back home. For instance, after he escaped the goblin s

instead, he searched for them. He could have traveled home, Bilbo missed his home very much,
but he thought about how the dwarves have been trying to return home for many, many years.
Bilbo thought about his friends feelings, not just his own. He was willing to help them even

Emission Standards of the Diesel Engine
Diesel engines began to be used in automobiles in the 1930s. They are used in many trucks, ships,
buses and small passenger cars in Europe right now.[1] Many believe that diesel engine are heavier,
noisier and generate black smock when running. However, diesel engine s unique advantages can
make them the engine of the future for vehicles. And with much more stringent standard to take
effect in the future, diesel engines emissions and control technologies are still very much in the
forefront. This paper will cover the developments in diesel vehicles emission regulation and control
technology for NOx, particulate matter (PM) for diesel vehicles.
Regulation
Right now there are two kinds of emission standard in US. One of them is federal standards
established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and another is California standards.
Since the State of California are facing more severe air pollutant problem than most of other state,
they choose to adopt its own emission regulations. The California Air Resources Board (ARB)
establish engine and vehicle emission regulations that are often more stringent than the federal
rules. Other states can make their own decision to either implement the federal emission standards
or to use California requirements.
After the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) on 1990, two sets of standards have been defined
for light duty vehicles. Tier I standard was published in 1991 and was phased in between 1994 and
1997. Tier II standard was

Football Dangers In Football
How dangerous is football in high school? The issue focused on how often the football players get
injured and if high school athletes got injured more than college athletes. Football is a tough sport,
but the results of getting injured, sometimes in that sport are so severe, improvements can be
made to try and make it a safer sport for all the players high schoolor college. Multiple athletes give
it their all out on the field, but some end up with severe injuriesthat can affect them for the rest of
their lives. The article focuses on some of the ways and precautions that athletes and coaches
can do or take to prevent athletes from receiving concussions or worse injuries. This essay
discusses, high school football players are very likely to get injured towards ending season
more than football college players for various reasons. A research associate said, there are ways
to reduce the number and severity of football injuries through targeted intervention. (resource 1)
There were high levels of knee and ankle injuries, due to ligament sprains. A way that can help
to improve on those types of injuries would be stretching exercises. The positions that run a
higher risk of being injured would be the running backs and linebackers. Football is the number
one leading cause of sports related injuries. (resource 1) The key aspect discussed, in this sport,
there is a difference in high school athletes and college athletes for the simple fact that athletes
that are still in high school have brain tissue that has not been fully developed to its full
capacity, whereas football players in college are already adults with their brain tissue developed
completely. Studies show, concussions are more dangerous for teenagers because their brain
tissue is less developed than adults. (resource 2) The gear that football players use should be
safer in terms of being in suitable conditions, multiple young players use unsuitable gear that has
been passed down long past their prime. (resource 2) If their gear was in suitable conditions, there
would be less head injuries occurring to the players specially the high school players because like
anything else those helmets are going to become unsafe and less sturdy. The game could

The Power of Interior Monologues in War and Peace Essay...
War and Peace probed into the human essence and its search for the truths of life. Tolstoy focused
on two men to represent and carry the burden of finding those ethereal values. Throughout the
novel, he utilized numerous images, symbols, dialogue, and foreshadowing to advance the progress
of his characters. Yet, his most effective use of technical device can be found in describing the
psychological thoughts and interior monologues of the characters. Most notably, the thoughts of
Pierreand Andrei served to portray their spiritual changes better than by what they did, and also
helped to foretell and build suspense to upcoming actions. By doing so, Tolstoyfurthered the plot
and created a realistic world from which to study... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Truly a pioneer, he managed to profess these beliefs in a fictitious novel that has become one of
the masterpieces of western and world literature. Upon further examination of War and Peace, he
expresses these Zen and early Christian beliefs specifically through the mental thoughts of Pierre,
Andrei, and even the mythical Platon. Though not as skilled a writer of the human mind as his
compatriot, Fyodor Dostoevsky, he did meritoriously utilize Pierre s and Andrei s mental awareness
and psychological changes of consciousness to foreshadow upcoming actions and to present the
Zen belief, so popular in the modern western world today.
Tolstoy introduces his first main character, Pierre Bezukhov, at Anna Pavlovna s soire. Pierre will
experience several mental awakenings into the meaning of life that eventually builds up into a
climactic revelation that changes his life forever. In essence, Pierre s life progresses mainly
through his thoughts and feelings rather than through his actions. Of all the major characters, he
partakes in the least number of physical actions, and the actions he does perform can be
foreshadowed from previous thoughts. His journey to define life occurs in three psychological
stage: pre conversion, conversion, and post conversion. The pre conversion period portrays his
mind as a conglomerate of differing emotions, feelings, thoughts, and impulses. Tolstoy describes

A time management system is a designed combination of processes, tools, techniques, and methods.
Usually time management is a necessity in any project development as it determines the project
completion time and scope.
In business, time management has morphed into everything from methodologies such as Enterprise
Resource Planning through consultant services such as Professional Organizers. When we think of
time management, however, we tend to think of personal time management, loosely defined as
managing our time to waste less time on doing the things we have to do so we have more time to
do the things we want to do. Therefore, time management is often thought of or presented as a set
of time management skills; the theory is that once we master the time management skills, we ll be
more organized, efficient, and happier. There are an abundance of books, classes, workshops, day
planners, and seminars on time management, which teach individuals and corporations how to be
more organized and more productive. Time management has become crucial in recent years thanks
to the 24/7, busy world in which we live.
Time management is important for everyone. While time management books and seminars often
place their focus on business leaders and corporations, time management is also crucial for
students, teachers, factory workers, professionals, and home makers. Time management is perhaps
most essential for the person who owns his or her own business or who runs a

Essay On The DACA Deal
The DACA Deal: Finding a Place for America s Dreamers
Congress, get ready to do your job DACA! Trump exclaimed in one of his tweets on Tuesday
morning, September 5th.
This tweet is referencing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or more commonly known
as DACA. This immigration policy, formed in 2012 by the Obama administration, specifically
targets people who illegally entered the US as children. These children, often times referred to as
Dreamers , are protected from immediate deportation under DACA by granting them deferred
action status as long as they meet the criteria of DACA. This status only lasts for two years, but
recipients can renew their status. Those protected by DACA also receive work permits, and while...

republicans also aren t in favor of repealing DACA. The chief opponents of repealing DACA are
the left, such as senator Bernie Sanders, who has stated that repealing DACA would be one of the
ugliest and craziest decisions ever made by a president.
On the other hand, supporters of repealing DACA also have their own reasons for wanting to get
rid of the act. Some believe that DACA is a legal concern. Current Attorney General Jeff Sessions,
in a press briefing discussing getting rid of DACA, stated this about removing DACA.
This policy was implemented unilaterally to great controversy and legal concern after Congress
rejected legislation proposals to extend similar benefits on numerous occasions to this same group
of illegal aliens.... The executive branch, through DACA, deliberately sought to achieve what the
legislative branch specifically refused to authorise on multiple occasions. Such an open ended
circumvention of immigration laws was an unconstitutional exercise of authority by the Executive
Branch.
Others state that the immigrants protected under DACA are stealing jobs that could have gone to
american citizens. Also, in June multiple conservative states threatened to sue the Trump
administration if DACA was not repealed, considered to be the jumpstart for repealing DACA, as
those states bear the brunt of immigration. Repealing DACA will

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards Essay
As new technologies develop and become mainstream over time, there needs to be specific
regulations in place. It is best if these sets of regulations are developed and maintained
independently from battery manufacturers, automobile manufacturers, and/or suppliers. Currently
today there are many bodies that maintain these standards. A few of them include UL (Underwriters
Laboratories), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), NEMA (National Electrical
Manufacturers Association), SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), UN (United Nations), IEEE
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards or Japanese
Standards Association), GB (Guo Biao or National Standard for the People s Republic of China),
US DOT FMVSS ( Federal Motor VehicleSafety Standards and Regulations), and BATSO
(Battery Safety Organization). These organizations set the standards to help minimize safety
risks which include but are not limited to fire, explosion, and shock. These standards are in place
to try and assess the safety risk associated with these new technologies and to help engineer them

Analysis and Commentary on The Epic of Sundiata
The Epic of Sundiata The Epic of Sundiata is a tale about the ancient kingdom of Mali in Africa
and the legendary king and founder of the Mali Empire told by Djeli Mamadou Kouyate a griot,
which is equivalent to storyteller. Before the griot begins the story he introduces himself as a
master in the art of eloquence. He explains how his family had played an important role in
preserving the history of the MaliEmpire. By serving the princes of the Mali Empire. He says a
griots job is to protect secrets, memorize the names and accomplishments of the great kings and
preserving the memory of mankind. It is the griot that teaches kings their history so they can use
lessons of their ancestors to guide their decisions. There is an obvious tone of importance in his
introduction as well as a theme of power that resonates throughout the epic. The griot presents
himself in the introduction to the audience in a way that gives him prestige. He is persuading his
audience to believe that he has the credentials to tell a valid story.
Why did The Epic of Sundiata become so significant and popular? Griots most have known of

Current Challenges Of India s Third Largest Workforce
Current strengths
Second largest workforce in the world
India has the second largest workforce in the world, which is expected to increase even more. This
gives India an advantage over competitors such as China. In addition, India also has a large English
speaking working population, which gives the country a competitive advantage in sectors such as
information technology (IT), business process outsourcing (BPO) and a multitude of other services.
According to the Planning Commission report in 2012, the labor force in India is expected to
swell by more than 30% during the next 20 years, compared to a decline of 4.0% in industrialized
nations and by around 5.0% in China. The strong growth of the working age population is expected
to provide significant and sustained impetus to economic growth.
Current challenges
Stubborn inflation
India s inflation rate has been one of the highest in emerging markets, affecting the country s
economic recovery and constraining its sovereign rating. Consistent high inflation provides little
room for the central bank to cut interest rate, which keeps key interest rate on the higher side, thus
acting as an impediment to growth. According to Market Line, in 2013, inflation was high at 9.5%.
Inflation averaged 10% during 2008 13. Supply side shortages and a weak rupee continue to push
upward pressure on inflation. In addition, government programs for supporting rural incomes has
changed consumption patterns in the rural areas and thus inflated

Virginia And Massachusetts Compare And Contrast
During the early 1600s many new colonies were building up strong economies that produced
materials worthy of trade. These colonies were also experimenting with more freedoms and
democratic systems away from the watchful crown of England. Two colonies, Virginia and
Massachusetts, were both able to be self sustaining colonies despite the vast differences between the
two. Virginia s strong economic independence and Massachusettsstrong political freedoms and
independence allowed the regions to establish themselves separate from England.

Massachusetts was established by puritans in order for them to be free from the Anglican church
of England. Massachusetts political system was largely swayed by the puritan church and many
laws enforced biblical rule. The colony was governed by a representative body that required the
representatives, as well as any other legal men, to be within strong standing in the puritan church
before they were permitted to hold any political office. This government allowed the colony and
her people to govern themselves creating a trial ground for democracy. However, the incredibly
strict beliefs of the puritans developed an intolerance of people of other faiths, such as the quakers,
anglicans and catholics, and thus caused a lack of diversity of ideas in the colony. Virginia s
government, on the other hand, was not governed as a bible commonwealth like in massachusetts,
this allowed for more diversity in the colony. In Virginia status was determined by land ownership
instead of standing in the church. This created a class system which excluded many of the freed
indentured servants from any involvement in the government. This eventually caused Bacon s
rebellion which despite its scale caused little immediate change in the Virginia government,
however it did make the government more aware of the freed frontiersmen who were previously
ignored. This eventually gave them more sway in the colonial government which allowed for the
eventual formation of a democratic

according to seventy five percent of Americans, Today s youth are less virtuous and industrious

sure that one of the biggest factors in this lazy younger generation belief is the technological
advantages we have at our disposal. The older generation views our willingness to use these
advancements as working smart, and not hard , which in their minds, makes it seem like we
prefer to take the easy way out. This is more than often not the case! I am sure that if millennials

Themes In The Golden Girls
The Golden Girls is an iconic television show set in 1980 s Miami that not only provides insight
to aging in America through humor, but sometimes lectures the viewer on social topics with an
obvious liberal agenda. Even though I have probably viewed every episode hundreds of times
over the past thirty years, I still find myself eager to watch it every night at bedtime to end the
stresses of the day on a happy note. I do not always agree with the opinions expressed by the
characters or the outcome of a particular episode. However, I still come back for more each night
because most episodes end on a happy note, and that allows me to drift into sleep with a little
less stress on my mind. For seven seasons, . . . the series won several awards during its run,
including 11 Emmys and four Golden Globes (MTSU). The creator of the show, Susan Harris,
also created the 1970 s show called Soap. Both shows were produced by Paul Junger Witt and
Tony Thomas (Golden Girls: Miami Spice). While I was very young during Soap s run on
television, I have seen reruns of it a few times. It most definitely has liberal agenda themes that are
presented with humor like The Golden Girls. However, it was presented in poor taste in its acting
and storylines to present a message that could have been construed as offensive to much of the
audience back in the 1970 s. It is very rare to talk to someone today that has even heard of Soap
and it certainly has not reached cult like status

Ethnocentrism In Walla
In my observation of Walla Walla University I have seen ethnocentrism being a prominent part of
the campus s culture. Ethnocentrism is a commonly used word in circles where ethnicity, inter
ethnic relations, and similar social issues are of concern. The definition of ethnocentrism is the
belief that one s cultureand way of life are superior of other groups. This causes judging among
different groups and assumptions that there are inferior groups to your own. The roots of the word
are ethnic and centrism, ethnic means cultural heritage and, centrism means to the central starting
point. Put them together and ethnocentrismbasically refers to judging other groups from our own
cultural point of view. It s true we reject those outside our group, our customs, our food, our
traditions, our music, our religion, our beliefs and values. We think that our lifestyle is somehow
much better than those of other societies. The questions I found out through my observation of
WWU was why do people do this. I asked some people if they thought they were ethnocentric and
the results showed that most people think that they are not ethnocentric, but are rather open minded
to other cultures. As I will explain in my writing that this their response isn t true at all and that
everyone is ethnocentric. There is no way not to be ethnocentric and it cannot be avoided. In my
project I will cover examples of ethnocentrism in the Walla Walla University campus, describe the

Siblings In Ender s Game By Orson Scott Card
It is amazing how siblings can be so similar yet so different. In the book Ender s Game by Orson

Ender s older sister Valentine is very sweet and compassionate to others. She would help Ender

Peter, the oldest sibling, was stronger and bigger than Ender. He was also smart and strategic, but
he was a bit too prideful and violent. He always picked on Ender and would torment and beat him

The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay
Science Fiction Films
The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema
it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the
movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it
changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural
history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and
evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema.
When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science
fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction
genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992,
and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure.
Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much
science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre.
Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many
respects.
The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such
as the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the Wild West, and bad
guys with

Summary Of The Woman Warrior By Maxine Hong Kingston

20 January 2016
Subjugation of Women in No Name Woman
The Story Woman Warrior written by Maxine Hong Kingston in 1975, is a great representation of
what woman are characterized as in regards to being submissive or rebellious in their society, and
how, even though they are harshly treated, the women fight back instead of letting themselves be
subjugated, it exemplifies the hardships women face in their lives. In The Woman Warrior
: Memoirs
of a Girlhood Among Ghosts, Author Maxine Hong Kingstonbrings to the table a bunch of
allegorical and life stories that bring upon the hardships in which she, herself, must deal with the
sexist ideology and prejudice growing up young Chinese American girl. Throughout her life she
was called such racist and stereotypical names such as gook and is repeatedly told such chauvinist
Chinese sayings like girls are maggots in the rice by her own flesh and blood; her parents. Maxine
Hong Kingston feels isolated from modern American culture and from the patriarchal Chinese
culture.
In her recollection of her memories she reminisces of her search for female archetypes, while
involving some imaginative stories associating Chinese characters as Fa Mu Lan, a woman warrior
known to China; with thoughts of her own obstinate mother, Brave Orchid. Through these
numerous accounts, the narrator searches to proclaim her identity as a Chinese American female in
her own bicultural world. Amidst

The World s Latest Events
Picture 60 years ago, there was only one source of information to seek out for information on the
world s latest events; the newspaper. The spreading of news was a passive relationship, with
producers distributing information down to consumers in a linear formation. There was no option
for the common citizen to instantly upload an essay or photo with their views on current world
events. Today we are much more fortunate, there has been a power shift from traditional producers;
creating an active relationship when it comes to citizens participating in the news. Whether the user
is actively uploading information themselves or reading what others have posted, there is a large
jump in the number of people who feel the need to become involved in todays happenings. With a
large number of individuals spreading updates of the worlds news there also comes advances in
technology that aids the distribution of such information. Multiple online platforms have been
created to assist the public in their ongoing quest to share information around the world.
As advances in technology rapidly grows in todays society, so does the number of ways in which
we can spread the information we are receiving. Individuals have the ability to share current
events as soon as they occur, rather than waiting for the newspaper to cover only one aspect of the
news story days after it has occurred. It s becoming more uncommon for the average person to take
the time to sit down and watch the television or read

Mechanism of the Health promoting Effects of the Food Ingredient
Evidence suggests that the biological effectiveness of CLA are due to the separate actions of cis 9,

synergistic actions of these isomers. Findings such as, inhibition of chemically induced

Insulin resistance can also be caused by increased triglycerides and free fatty acids intake. This is
due to the effect Triglycerides and free fatty acids have on insulin stimulated signal pathways,
translocation protein 4 and glucose uptake (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). It is found that CLA has
a regulatory effect on glucose and lipid metabolism regulators. CLA affects the PPAR y ligand, a
major receptor that influences the expression and transcription of genes that are related to the
metabolic effects of glucose and lipids. Such protein regulators as aP2, insulin dependent glucose
transporter 4, FATp, ACS and adiponectin are all influenced by increased CLA. (Xiao Rong
Zhoua, Chang Hao Suna, Jia Ren Liua, b, Dan Zhaoa, 2008). It was also theorized that CLA may
act on other glucose regulators such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, glucose 6 phosphate,
glucokinase, sterol regulation element finding protein, acyl coenzyme A oxidase, fatty acid
synthase and uncoupling protein. Testing done on rats with a mixture of cis 9, trans 11 and
trans 10, cis 12 CLA had found that the only effected regulatory agents were regulators involved
in gluconeogenesis such as Phosphoenol carboxykinase and transcriptional factors, sterol
regulating element binding protein 1c and PPAR y (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). The main
regulatory effect on insulin resistance was the effect on ligand PPAR y, a key regulator in lipid
homeostasis. Mixtures of CLA isomers consisting of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10,cis 12 effect
gene expression of PPARy mRNA in rats. It was found to have affected the levels of aP2, FATP,

proteins resulting in an uptake of free fatty acids into the adipose tissue and decreasing uptake into

different from the video on YouTube except the feeling in terms of the atmosphere. However, I
realized this atmosphere is the most important advantage of actual concert and the reason why still
so many people love to listen to music at concert halls. Without these enthusiastic audiences, the
field of music has never developed and won t develop in the future.
The program guide was not only useful to get information about music that the orchestra played but
also contained interesting facts. The one thing I did not know before is how widely this concert
hall and orchestra are supported by communities, companies, and even individuals. On the last some
pages of the program guide, there are hundreds of names which or who donated for The
Philadelphia Orchestra. (ThePhiladelphiaOrchestra 42 60) In addition, it was my new discovery
that this organization globally active and contribute for the regional vitalization.

Moses Dbq Questions And Answers
Moses helped the Hebrews a lot. With the many things he did, he got them out of Egypt. In my
perspective, if I was a Hebrew slave, I would follow Moses out of Egypt. I would follow Moses out
of Egypt because the Hebrews were slaves. Moses had the power of God, along with the Ten
Commandments. I would want to avoid the plagues.
To begin with, one reason I would follow Moses out of Egypt is because the Hebrews were slaves.
For instance, the Hebrews were oppressed. According to Document 2, it tells us that Moses saw a
Hebrew slave being mistreated. This means that the slaves were mistreated while being in Egypt.
Document 2 supports my reason because it tells us that an innocent slave was being wronged.
In addition, I would choose to follow Moses

Libertarian Argument Analysis
Well this question can be answered depending on what s your definition of free and of a modern
state . The primary goal of a modern state is to maintain order while still trying to maintain the
happiness of its citizens and by doing so, society is set up and ran by governments, official, and
laws that we the people are to abide by. To be totally free in my opinion is to live in the means of
no one, without any constitutional right prohibiting you from doing certain things. Now, I m not
making the argument that being free means obeying by no rules and living on the edge. I m just
making an ideal assumption that being free and living in a modern state would only occur if it
was substantially less governmental involvement. To be totally free without limitations would be
impossible. It s almost like we live in a world where we the people are the children of the
government and the government as well as the president is our parents! They let us be adults and
be free to a certain extent until they feel as our... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They basically feel we live in a modern state built of liberalism meaning we all are worthy of
freedom, and argues the importance of freedom results to the needing of less governmental
involvement as much as possible. Libertarians basically put forth that there should be as little
government involvement as possible. If you ask me, we live in a modern state now where we
are supposedly free says the constitutional rights, but yet this world is still unequally balanced.
How can being totally free mean that in order to prevail in this modern day society we still have
to work 24 hours a day all week for the governments pay after they tax so much from our checks.
We are told that college is the only way to make it in this modern state, but yet we finish college,
end up with no job, and still have thousands of dollars to pay back to the

Essay On Should Police Wear Body Cameras
Over the past year there have been many situations between police officers and civilians that we
don t exactly know what happened because it someone s word over another. In August 2014, an
unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Some
witnesses confirmed the policeofficer s claim that he shot the teenager under self defense. While
others claimed that the victim posed no threat to the officer and that the shooting was uncalled for.
The result of this was that the police officerwasn t charged with a crime. If that officer had been
wearing a body camera, while he was on duty, we could see with our own eyes if Michael Brown
was threatening to the officer or if the shooting was unjustified. Police officers should wear body
cameras while on duty because the cameras would hold police accountable to their actions, prevent
violence, and would improve the public s perspective on police officers.
To begin with, if police officers wore body cameras they would hold them accountable for their
actions. The article of Should Police wear Body Cameras, explained that body cameras say that they

The article of Should Police wear Body Cameras, described that civilians and police officers are
far more mindful when being recorded. Both police officers and civilians are less likely to use
violence if they are being recorded with a body camera. For instance, the article More Local
Police Departments May start using Body Cameras stated that ever since 120 police officer in
California were given body cameras the reports of Police abuse dropped. Civilians could make
up fake claims that police officers are abusing them and we wouldn t be able to prove them wrong,
but now that those officers are wearing cameras while on duty, the reports against officers have
sufficiently decreased. Officers wearing body cameras on duty would help violence claims and

Essay about Andrew Jackson, an Ideal President for America
Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States of America, can be debated as either a
good president or bad president. But if one were to weigh out the positives and negatives of
Andrew Jackson s presidency, one would realize that his positives outweigh his negatives for a
variety of historic facts. Andrew Jacksonwas a good president because he represented the majority
of America s people by being a common, prevented a civil war when South Carolina threatened to
secede from the nation, and because he technically found or instigated the two major parties used
in America today (Democratic and Republican). Many Jackson oppositionists despise him because
of he is a hypocrite, however America was founded on hypocrisy so as an... Show more content on

Jackson is very important because he created or instigated the two dominant political parties we
use today (democratic and republican). The beliefs in these parties switched several times in
history but initially Jackson was a democrat. The major beliefs in democrats in the 1820s 1850s
were the beliefs in a small national government, pro states rights, and a strict interpretation of the
constitution. The republicans (initially known as the Whigs) essentially opposed all of Jackson
s beliefs and therefore had more or less the complete opposite beliefs of the democrats. By
starting these two political parties, he started the way people would categorize political
candidates throughout the rest of American history. There are many who are against Andrew
Jackson because he is a hypocrite. An example of this is how Jackson states he is against slavery
but still owned slaves. One has to understand that America was founded on hypocrisy. Essentially
what Jackson is trying to do is to make compromises on situations so he can support both sides of
an argument to represent as many people as possible. Conclusively Jackson was a great president
because he represented the people of America by being a common man, overcame huge obstacles
such as keeping South Carolina from seceding, and by forming the two most popular political
parties used in America today, the Democrats and the Republicans. Those who argue that Jackson
was a bad president simply

Terry Swenson Viewpoints
Being accepted into a college should be based solely on merit. Yes, having quotas can diversify
the class discussions, and help other students gain a different perspective on things. Terry Swenson
says, race doesn t correlate with a particular viewpoint and, therefore, we look beyond skin color
alone to a student s background (parental occupation, parental educational background,
neighborhood) as we try to assess what different perspective he/she may bring to our campus. Your
race doesn t necessarily change your views on issues, but your experiences, education, and
geography do. A lot of times people assume that minorities are the only ones in bad living
conditions or poor neighborhoods. That is very false Caucasians live in those conditions,

Computer Tablet In China
One might believe that marketing strategies are interchangeable within countries throughout the
world; however, one must carefully consider the cultural and economic disparities between those
countries. Computer tablets vary in price, performance, available applications, and durability. For
example, what one might find inexpensive in the United States could be a month s salary in
another. The primary use of a computer tablet in Mexico is Facebook, while in Chinait is gaming.
Moreover, a significant influence in purchasing a computer tablet for Americans is performance,
while in China it is the price. Therefore, manufacturers should study, analyze, and implement
economic and cultural differences in their marketingstrategies for a... Show more content on

Advertising inundates people in virtually every society, whether it is television, print, radio, or the
Internet. These traditional marketing strategies lack authenticity and originality, creating skepticism
in their legitimacy. To avoid this, marketers should provide the resources necessary for Chinese
consumers to practice word of mouth marketing. This research concluded that it is the origin and
quality of the content found on the Internet that makes it legitimate. Utilizing today s modern
technology, nearly anyone can build an Internet community with little or no financial resources.
These platforms for communication can be physical or virtual, such as a storefront or an Internet
forum. Chinese social media platforms, such as Renren and Weibo, are very effective and
inexpensive strategies. People often refer to Renren as China s Facebook, as it is trendy, successful,
and free. Another effective community to practice WOM marketing is a company or product
forum. A forum offers product owners a place where they could openly express their concerns and
experiences with others, while potential customers could obtain product reviews from real people.
Online communities form bonds between members, which in turn develops a reliable resource
within the most utilized information search tool, the Internet.
According to Boston Consulting Group, half of Chinese Internet users say that the Internet

Criticism And Symbolism In Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway
My physical science professor showed my class a picture diagram of the three pronged iceberg
that sank the Titanic. A fellow peer of mine immediately said, How did that small iceberg sink a
huge ship? My professor let the class debate back and forth for awhile before she zoomed out of
the diagram to reveal a hulking mass of ice below the surface of the water. She then went on to
explain that less than 10 percent of an iceberg rests above the water s surface. Ernest Hemingway
models his writing in the form of an iceberg. Hemingway s style of writing, called the Iceberg
Theory, divulges the facts essential to understanding the plot without explicitly stating the
underlying structure, allowing the reader to sense the story s details. Hemingway demonstrates the
Iceberg Theory in his memoir Moveable Feast.
In one instance in Moveable Feast, Hemingway uses the Iceberg Theory to reveal a character s
disposition through symbolism. This theory prevails in Hemingway s comparison of Scott
Fitzgerald s wife Zelda to that of a hawk. Hemingway says, Zelda had hawk s eyes ...
(Hemingway 154). In this reference, Hemingway assists the reader in visualizing Zelda s physical
attributes and mental makeup without directly expressing her appearance or state of mind.
Because hawks typically have beady black eyes, the eyes almost give the hawk a sense of
emptiness or void; in the same manner, the reader can picture the gap in Zelda s mind by
visualizing the vacancy behind her eyes. After

Separating Music Into Different Categories Or Styles In Music
Categories or styles in music are identified as genres. Separating music into different genres can be
achieved by identifying shared traditions or conventions in musical pieces. Simon Frith argues that
genre categorization is a tool for record companies in order to gain maximum profit from their
recording artists The underlying record company problem, in other words, how to turn musicinto a
commodity, is solved in generic terms (1996, p. 76). Articles by Reebee Garofalo, Simon Frith,
Hector Qirko and Arnold Shaw explore how musical genres are constructed, defined, negotiated, and
maintained.
The construction of genre constantly varies and is often inconsistent. This can be attributed to the
demands of consumerism. Music labels constantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is Rhythm Blues , originally referred to as race music, the term rhythm blues
trended in 1949 as a means to describe music recorded by black artists. Relating back to the
overlapping of musical styles in genre, rhythm blues serves as a direct and immediate source for
styles of rock n roll that rose to popularity in the mid twentieth century, however its historical
impact, as well as its artists and character have had limited acknowledgement (Shaw, 1980, p.71).
Garofalo (1987) even claimed until the Second World War Black and country and western
writers were routinely excluded from the society (p.78). An example of this suppressed
attention are the early recordings of Rock n Roll artist Elvis Presley, Shaw notes that, before
gaining fame, Presley s five Sun disks had included songs originally written and recorded by a
black Rhythm Blues artist (1980. P.71). Shaw argues that while rock n roll is a white derivative
of R B the two can easily be distinguished, presenting a number of distinctions, R B comprises the
1940s and early 50s era, while rock n roll surfaces in the mid 1950s (1980, p.74). Other
distinctions include sociological aspects, such as R B being the product of the black experience in
a segregated world...forcing them to find entertainment in...black locations (Shaw, 1980, p.74). In
this aspect, R B has been maintained as a musical aspect throughout its history, best explained by
this quote from Honkers and Shouters (1978) R B stemmed from a rich, indigenous folk tradition
whereas pop music was a mishmash of European influences (Shaw, 1980, p.78). R B received
recognition in its role for the emergence of rock n roll in the 1970s, providing an example of how
those two genres have been negotiated by scholars to offer roots and origins of genres in popular

  • 2. Cause Of The 1929 Stock Market Crash In late October of 1929, the U.S. stock market crashed, setting our nation into the Great Depression. In an attempt to reveal the true catalysts of the event, the book Causes of the 1929 Stock Market Crash examines popular beliefs of what really caused the economic tragedy. The nine questionable causes that are discussed in this book are that the stock marketwas too high in September of 1929 due to excessive speculation (Bierman 32), there was a downturn in business activity, the Hatry affair, the Federal Reserve Board s actions, a message that there was a war against speculators, excessive buying on margin and of investment stocks, excessive leverage in terms of debt, a competitively priced utility market segment paired with a setback in the public utilitymarket, and an overreaction by the stockmarket. Bierman argues that the overall stock market was not excessively high in September of 1929 and he even explains that the business outlook was favorable. Therefore, the crash did not occur because the market was too high. However, at least one section of the market (public utilities) was too high and too levered, and the stage was set for the selling panic by the press and the governmental officials repeatedly speaking of an orgy of speculation. After disproving common beliefs about the stock market crash, he continues to explain the actual causes. The next false cause is the Hatry case, which Bierman refers to as a tragedy . It involved an aggressive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Purpose Of Thriller The goal of Michael Jackson s Thriller music video is to leave the audience confused and somewhat scared. Thriller was a song that came out on November thirtieth, nineteen eighty two, sung by Michael Jackson. The music video is approximately fourteen minutes long, while the song is only about five minutes long. There is a very long storyline that comes with the video almost as if you are watching a short film. The video starts off with Michael and a young lady driving around in the middle of the night when suddenly the car runs out of gas. They get out of the car and start walking. Michael then asks the lady if she would be his girl. She of course says yes and then he tells her that he is different from other guys. He then transforms... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The viewers of the music video are then relieved when we see that everything that was going on was just a movie that Michael and his girlfriend had been watching at the movie theater. His girlfriend was not pleased with the movie because it was too scary for her so she decides to walk out of the movie. Michael follows her outside and the song finally begins. He teases her because she thought the movie was scary. He then starts singing to her about how something evil is lurking through the dark, perhaps to tease her some more and make her more afraid of the dark since she is still shaken up from the movie. She seems to not be frightened when Michael starts teasing her by singing. She is just walking next to him and smiling, which does not make any sense to me because it looked like he was trying to scare her. After Michael has sung for a while about how there is stuff coming to get her and paralyze her, corpses start rising from their graves. Later on, the corpses turn Michael into a zombie and the iconic Thriller dance begins as he dances with the other zombies. His girlfriend runs into a house and shuts the door behind her to hide from the zombies. Eventually the zombies, including Michael, break into the house. They almost reach ... In the following assignment, it is my intention to produce a research report, examining women involved in street prostitution and how they end up entering the criminal justice system. Women involved in street prostitution are subjected to routine violence and in the last 7 years, there have been unresolved murders and suspicious deaths, (Women s Support Project 2001). Historically, policing practices have been heavy handed and local government has sought to limit the spread of indoor prostitution. This is in contrast to the population of indoor prostitution in Edinburgh, which is approximately (90%) with only around 50 women involved in street prostitution, the proportion of intravenous drug users is also reportedly lower (Mackay, F Schaap, A 2000). In England and Wales between 1989 and 1995 there were 1,700 convictions of young people under 18 for offences relating to prostitution with a further 2,300 cautions issued. It was within this same period that there was a 40% increase in the number of recorded cases, which involved children aged 16 or under, (Mackay, F Schaap, A 2000). This has lead to the publication of national guidelines on the safeguarding of children involved in street prostitution in England and Wales (Department of Health, 2000). • 14. Racism In Cry, The Beloved Country, And Toni Morrison s... Racism has been a part of the world s landscape for centuries. Despite the progress of society, inequality has still manifested its way into today s population. The detrimental effects of racism are not limited to simply the survivors themselves; they continue to influence the lives of families for future generations. Inequality has a lasting legacy. This idea is represented well in Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, and Toni Morrisons Beloved. Each novel examines the legacy of inequality, and racism haunts each novels characters. The destruction of identity, the backdrop of social injustice, and separation of families can all be displayed in both texts. In Cry, the Beloved Country and Beloved it can be seen that Inequality employs a lasting legacy through the destruction of identity. To start, Paton shows how Johannesburgs system of apartheid shatters the morals and values of citizens. When in Johannesburg, powerful white men use the land to solely their own benefit. The tribal system of African natives is ravaged and replaced with homelessness, violence, fear, and poverty. Paton summarizes this when he states Our natives today produce criminals and prostitutes and drunkards, not because it is their nature to do so, but because their system of order and tradition has been destroyed. It was destroyed by the impact of our own civilization (Paton 146). The injustices faced by generations past are continuing to affect Johannesburg s current citizens. This is ... • 15. Rise Of The Counterculture During the sixties, American people saw the rise of the counterculture. Counterculture was a group of movements focused on achieving personal and cultural liberation, mainly embraced by the decade s young adults. Because many Americans were members of the different movements in the counterculture, the counterculture influenced American society as a whole. As a result of the achievements the counterculture movements had made, the United Statesin the 1960sbecame a more open, more tolerant, and a more freer country. In 1969, close to half a million self described hippies, peace makers, and Aquarians made an expedition from mainly San Francisco to Woodstock in upstate New York. The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival was called an Aquarian Exposition and hailed as three days of peace and music, over 400,000 people attended; it was peaceful. However, life outside of the woodstock festivalwas not. America seemed to be dividing as a country. The war in Vietnam went on for roughly another 15 years. American boys were still being sent to Southeast Asia by the newly elected President, Nixon. The increasingly unpopular war intensified a campus protest movement. Burning draft cards and peace marches became daily fare on the evening news. And not all of the demonstrations were peaceful. The summer after Martin Luther King was assassinated, riots broke out in 125 cities including, Chicago, Baltimore, NYC, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, at the Democratic convention in Chicago, the anti war movement tore the Democratic Party in two. Both critics and fans agree that Woodstock has become part of the mythology of the 1960s, even if the actual event didn t necessarily represent the musical or political taste of most of the young Americans adults at this time. Some say it symbolized the freedom and idealism of the 1960s. Some argue that Woodstock represented much of everything that was wrong with the sixties: a glorification of drugs, a loosening of sexual morality and a socially corrosive disrespect for authority. The 60s was full of major movements. One of the most powerful counterculture movements was the civil rights movement. In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act to end racial discrimination in employment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was settled by Europeans and established as a port for the Republic of Mexico. It was rich in immigration and dominated trade. It has a history of turmoil caused by war and natural disasters. Galveston Island formed as a typical barrier island. Galveston s formation took place 5000 years ago, as wind and wave energy along with rising sea water levels moved sand around to form the island. The wave and wind energy is indicative of storm surge often caused by hurricane interaction. The building up of Galveston Island continued until 3000 years ago. Still, he defied them all, and many times alone. He had to rely only on himself. Luckily, Bilbo was also very clever. He was able to have Gollum show him the way out of the Goblin cave while avoiding him instantaneously. Also, when the dwarves were imprisoned by the wood elves, Bilbo created a plan that lead to their escape. If it were not for his masterful ideas, then the dwarves may have rotted in prison. In the Misty Mountains, he was able to talk to Smaug and still live to tell the tale. Though, Bilbo did not start off as a hero. It was throughout his adventure that he became ... They are used in many trucks, ships, buses and small passenger cars in Europe right now.[1] Many believe that diesel engine are heavier, noisier and generate black smock when running. However, diesel engine s unique advantages can make them the engine of the future for vehicles. And with much more stringent standard to take effect in the future, diesel engines emissions and control technologies are still very much in the forefront. This paper will cover the developments in diesel vehicles emission regulation and control technology for NOx, particulate matter (PM) for diesel vehicles. Regulation Right now there are two kinds of emission standard in US. One of them is federal standards established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and another is California standards. Since the State of California are facing more severe air pollutant problem than most of other state, they choose to adopt its own emission regulations. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) establish engine and vehicle emission regulations that are often more stringent than the federal rules. Other states can make their own decision to either implement the federal emission standards or to use California requirements. After the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) on 1990, two sets of standards have been defined for light duty vehicles. Tier I standard was published in 1991 and was phased in between 1994 and 1997. Football is a tough sport, but the results of getting injured, sometimes in that sport are so severe, improvements can be made to try and make it a safer sport for all the players high schoolor college. Multiple athletes give it their all out on the field, but some end up with severe injuriesthat can affect them for the rest of their lives. The article focuses on some of the ways and precautions that athletes and coaches can do or take to prevent athletes from receiving concussions or worse injuries. This essay discusses, high school football players are very likely to get injured towards ending season more than football college players for various reasons. A research associate said, there are ways to reduce the number and severity of football injuries through targeted intervention. (resource 1) There were high levels of knee and ankle injuries, due to ligament sprains. A way that can help to improve on those types of injuries would be stretching exercises. The positions that run a higher risk of being injured would be the running backs and linebackers. Football is the number one leading cause of sports related injuries. (resource 1) The key aspect discussed, in this sport, there is a difference in high school athletes and college athletes for the simple fact that athletes that are still in high school have brain tissue that has not been fully developed to its full capacity, whereas football players in college are already adults with their brain tissue developed completely. Studies show, concussions are more dangerous for teenagers because their brain tissue is less developed than adults. (resource 2) The gear that football players use should be safer in terms of being in suitable conditions, multiple young players use unsuitable gear that has been passed down long past their prime. (resource 2) If their gear was in suitable conditions, there would be less head injuries occurring to the players specially the high school players because like anything else those helmets are going to become unsafe and less sturdy. Tolstoy focused on two men to represent and carry the burden of finding those ethereal values. Throughout the novel, he utilized numerous images, symbols, dialogue, and foreshadowing to advance the progress of his characters. Yet, his most effective use of technical device can be found in describing the psychological thoughts and interior monologues of the characters. Upon further examination of War and Peace, he expresses these Zen and early Christian beliefs specifically through the mental thoughts of Pierre, Andrei, and even the mythical Platon. Though not as skilled a writer of the human mind as his compatriot, Fyodor Dostoevsky, he did meritoriously utilize Pierre s and Andrei s mental awareness and psychological changes of consciousness to foreshadow upcoming actions and to present the Zen belief, so popular in the modern western world today. Tolstoy introduces his first main character, Pierre Bezukhov, at Anna Pavlovna s soire. Pierre will experience several mental awakenings into the meaning of life that eventually builds up into a climactic revelation that changes his life forever. In essence, Pierre s life progresses mainly through his thoughts and feelings rather than through his actions. Of all the major characters, he partakes in the least number of physical actions, and the actions he does perform can be foreshadowed from previous thoughts. • 37. The Science Fiction Film Genre Essay Science Fiction Films The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema. When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, and 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. Findings such as, inhibition of chemically induced carcinogenesis, enhanced immune system, reduction of atherosclerosis, enhanced growth, fat reduction are attributed to a mixture of these CLA isomers (Pariza, Park, Cook, 2001). Weight reduction Researchers have theorized about the many mechanisms CLA have an effect on. Some proposed mechanisms such as reduction of proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes, decreased esterification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Insulin resistance can also be caused by increased triglycerides and free fatty acids intake. This is due to the effect Triglycerides and free fatty acids have on insulin stimulated signal pathways, translocation protein 4 and glucose uptake (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). It is found that CLA has a regulatory effect on glucose and lipid metabolism regulators. CLA affects the PPAR y ligand, a major receptor that influences the expression and transcription of genes that are related to the metabolic effects of glucose and lipids. Such protein regulators as aP2, insulin dependent glucose transporter 4, FATp, ACS and adiponectin are all influenced by increased CLA. (Xiao Rong Zhoua, Chang Hao Suna, Jia Ren Liua, b, Dan Zhaoa, 2008). It was also theorized that CLA may act on other glucose regulators such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, glucose 6 phosphate, glucokinase, sterol regulation element finding protein, acyl coenzyme A oxidase, fatty acid synthase and uncoupling protein. Testing done on rats with a mixture of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10, cis 12 CLA had found that the only effected regulatory agents were regulators involved in gluconeogenesis such as Phosphoenol carboxykinase and transcriptional factors, sterol regulating element binding protein 1c and PPAR y (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). The main regulatory effect on insulin resistance was the effect on ligand PPAR y, a key regulator in lipid homeostasis. Mixtures of CLA isomers consisting of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10,cis 12 effect gene expression of PPARy mRNA in rats. It was found to have affected the levels of aP2, FATP, ACS and adipoenectin mRNA expression in adipose tissue. CLA increased These regulatory proteins resulting in an uptake of free fatty acids into the adipose tissue and decreasing uptake into the muscle tissue. This has been found to improve muscle insulin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Jazz Concert Analysis Composed by Leonardo Bernstein in 1949, Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs for Solo Clarinet and Jazz Ensemble is the short music which is classified as the classical concert but has more musical elements of jazz music. The instruments used in this music are solo clarinet, saxes and trumpets in fives, four trombones, piano, string bass, and drums. In fact, the symphony I listed was almost nothing different from the video on YouTube except the feeling in terms of the atmosphere. However, I realized this atmosphere is the most important advantage of actual concert and the reason why still so many people love to listen to music at concert halls. Without these enthusiastic audiences, the field of music has never developed and won t develop in the future. The program guide was not only useful to get information about music that the orchestra played but also contained interesting facts. The one thing I did not know before is how widely this concert hall and orchestra are supported by communities, companies, and even individuals. On the last some pages of the program guide, there are hundreds of names which or who donated for The Philadelphia Orchestra. In my perspective, if I was a Hebrew slave, I would follow Moses out of Egypt. I would follow Moses out of Egypt because the Hebrews were slaves. Moses had the power of God, along with the Ten Commandments. I would want to avoid the plagues. To begin with, one reason I would follow Moses out of Egypt is because the Hebrews were slaves. For instance, the Hebrews were oppressed. According to Document 2, it tells us that Moses saw a Hebrew slave being mistreated. This means that the slaves were mistreated while being in Egypt. Document 2 supports my reason because it tells us that an innocent slave was being wronged. In addition, I would choose to follow Moses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Libertarian Argument Analysis Well this question can be answered depending on what s your definition of free and of a modern state . The primary goal of a modern state is to maintain order while still trying to maintain the happiness of its citizens and by doing so, society is set up and ran by governments, official, and laws that we the people are to abide by. To be totally free in my opinion is to live in the means of no one, without any constitutional right prohibiting you from doing certain things. Now, I m not making the argument that being free means obeying by no rules and living on the edge. I m just making an ideal assumption that being free and living in a modern state would only occur if it was substantially less governmental involvement. To be totally free without limitations would be impossible. It s almost like we live in a world where we the people are the children of the government and the government as well as the president is our parents! Essay On Should Police Wear Body Cameras Over the past year there have been many situations between police officers and civilians that we don t exactly know what happened because it someone s word over another. In August 2014, an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Some witnesses confirmed the policeofficer s claim that he shot the teenager under self defense. While others claimed that the victim posed no threat to the officer and that the shooting was uncalled for. The result of this was that the police officerwasn t charged with a crime. If that officer had been wearing a body camera, while he was on duty, we could see with our own eyes if Michael Brown was threatening to the officer or if the shooting was unjustified. Police officers should wear body cameras while on duty because the cameras would hold police accountable to their actions, prevent violence, and would improve the public s perspective on police officers. To begin with, if police officers wore body cameras they would hold them accountable for their actions. The article of Should Police wear Body Cameras, explained that body cameras say that they ... • 45. Essay about Andrew Jackson, an Ideal President for America Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States of America, can be debated as either a good president or bad president. But if one were to weigh out the positives and negatives of Andrew Jackson s presidency, one would realize that his positives outweigh his negatives for a variety of historic facts. Andrew Jacksonwas a good president because he represented the majority of America s people by being a common, prevented a civil war when South Carolina threatened to secede from the nation, and because he technically found or instigated the two major parties used in America today (Democratic and Republican). Many Jackson oppositionists despise him because of he is a hypocrite, however America was founded on hypocrisy so as an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jackson is very important because he created or instigated the two dominant political parties we use today (democratic and republican). The beliefs in these parties switched several times in history but initially Jackson was a democrat. The major beliefs in democrats in the 1820s 1850s were the beliefs in a small national government, pro states rights, and a strict interpretation of the constitution. The republicans (initially known as the Whigs) essentially opposed all of Jackson s beliefs and therefore had more or less the complete opposite beliefs of the democrats. By starting these two political parties, he started the way people would categorize political candidates throughout the rest of American history. There are many who are against Andrew Jackson because he is a hypocrite. An example of this is how Jackson states he is against slavery but still owned slaves. One has to understand that America was founded on hypocrisy. Essentially what Jackson is trying to do is to make compromises on situations so he can support both sides of an argument to represent as many people as possible. Conclusively Jackson was a great president because he represented the people of America by being a common man, overcame huge obstacles such as keeping South Carolina from seceding, and by forming the two most popular political parties used in America today, the Democrats and the Republicans. Advertising inundates people in virtually every society, whether it is television, print, radio, or the Internet. These traditional marketing strategies lack authenticity and originality, creating skepticism in their legitimacy. To avoid this, marketers should provide the resources necessary for Chinese consumers to practice word of mouth marketing. This research concluded that it is the origin and quality of the content found on the Internet that makes it legitimate. Utilizing today s modern technology, nearly anyone can build an Internet community with little or no financial resources. These platforms for communication can be physical or virtual, such as a storefront or an Internet forum. Chinese social media platforms, such as Renren and Weibo, are very effective and inexpensive strategies. People often refer to Renren as China s Facebook, as it is trendy, successful, and free. Another effective community to practice WOM marketing is a company or product forum. A forum offers product owners a place where they could openly express their concerns and experiences with others, while potential customers could obtain product reviews from real people. Online communities form bonds between members, which in turn develops a reliable resource within the most utilized information search tool, the Internet. • 48. Criticism And Symbolism In Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway My physical science professor showed my class a picture diagram of the three pronged iceberg that sank the Titanic. A fellow peer of mine immediately said, How did that small iceberg sink a huge ship? My professor let the class debate back and forth for awhile before she zoomed out of the diagram to reveal a hulking mass of ice below the surface of the water. She then went on to explain that less than 10 percent of an iceberg rests above the water s surface. Ernest Hemingway models his writing in the form of an iceberg. Hemingway s style of writing, called the Iceberg Theory, divulges the facts essential to understanding the plot without explicitly stating the underlying structure, allowing the reader to sense the story s details. Hemingway demonstrates the Iceberg Theory in his memoir Moveable Feast. In one instance in Moveable Feast, Hemingway uses the Iceberg Theory to reveal a character s disposition through symbolism. This theory prevails in Hemingway s comparison of Scott Fitzgerald s wife Zelda to that of a hawk. Hemingway says, Zelda had hawk s eyes ... (Hemingway 154). In this reference, Hemingway assists the reader in visualizing Zelda s physical attributes and mental makeup without directly expressing her appearance or state of mind. Because hawks typically have beady black eyes, the eyes almost give the hawk a sense of emptiness or void; in the same manner, the reader can picture the gap in Zelda s mind by visualizing the vacancy behind her eyes. • 49. Separating Music Into Different Categories Or Styles In Music Categories or styles in music are identified as genres. Separating music into different genres can be achieved by identifying shared traditions or conventions in musical pieces. Simon Frith argues that genre categorization is a tool for record companies in order to gain maximum profit from their recording artists The underlying record company problem, in other words, how to turn musicinto a commodity, is solved in generic terms (1996, p. 76). Articles by Reebee Garofalo, Simon Frith, Hector Qirko and Arnold Shaw explore how musical genres are constructed, defined, negotiated, and maintained. The construction of genre constantly varies and is often inconsistent. This can be attributed to the demands of consumerism. Music labels constantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of this is Rhythm Blues , originally referred to as race music, the term rhythm blues trended in 1949 as a means to describe music recorded by black artists. Relating back to the overlapping of musical styles in genre, rhythm blues serves as a direct and immediate source for styles of rock n roll that rose to popularity in the mid twentieth century, however its historical impact, as well as its artists and character have had limited acknowledgement (Shaw, 1980, p.71). Garofalo (1987) even claimed until the Second World War Black and country and western writers were routinely excluded from the society (p.78). An example of this suppressed attention are the early recordings of Rock n Roll artist Elvis Presley, Shaw notes that, before gaining fame, Presley s five Sun disks had included songs originally written and recorded by a black Rhythm Blues artist (1980. P.71). Shaw argues that while rock n roll is a white derivative of R B the two can easily be distinguished, presenting a number of distinctions, R B comprises the 1940s and early 50s era, while rock n roll surfaces in the mid 1950s (1980, p.74). Other distinctions include sociological aspects, such as R B being the product of the black experience in a segregated world...forcing them to find entertainment in...black locations (Shaw, 1980, p.74). In this aspect, R B has been maintained as a musical aspect throughout its history, best explained by this quote from Honkers and Shouters (1978) R B stemmed from a rich, indigenous folk tradition whereas pop music was a mishmash of European influences (Shaw, 1980, p.78). R B received recognition in its role for the emergence of rock n roll in the 1970s, providing an example of how those two genres have been negotiated by scholars to offer roots and origins of genres in popular ...
